From the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

It has been a busy couple of weeks at Gumdale. Interschool sports has begun, sailing continues and we have enjoyed Instrumental Pop-Up Concerts during break times this week. We also continue to see great progress and performance in the classroom. Thank you to teachers and students for your consistent efforts in all areas.

This week our Year 3 and 5 students took part in NAPLAN. Well done to students and families for being well prepared, well fed and well rested for these exams. I express a sincere thank you to Year 3 and 5 staff, as well as Sarah Cracknell, Sarah Scott and Daphne Gillies for their coordination and supervision of NAPLAN at our school.

Despite a couple of false starts, the Senior Athletics was a big success. Thank you to James Doherty for his leadership and organisation and congratulations to all students who will progress to Districts.

Finally, best of luck to all our students competing in the Sport Aerobics competition at the Gold Coast this weekend, I know you will represent Gumdale to the best of your ability.

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

News from the Payment Desk

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place, One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your student’s account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.

Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.

Prompt payment of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you. Payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.

Paying your school invoices

All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date.

Please note that payments can be made one of four ways:

  1. Online using the BPOINT Payment Gateway https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or from the invoice using the BPOINT link
  2. Phone banking via BPOINT IVR (1300 631 073)
  3. Online using the QParent App or
  4. In person at our Administration Office during office hours (8:00am-3:30pm)

Despite having a delayed start, the conclusion of the senior athletics carnival went ahead last Monday. It was great to see so many parent spectators and students cheering their children and fellow classmates on. Congratulations to all of the students who will go through to district.

Classroom Visits

We are currently visiting our Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4 classrooms to chat to students about their learning goals, progress and challenges. It is wonderful to hear students proudly sharing their achievements.

Thank you to everyone that supports our school by purchasing books through the scholastic catalogues. The students look forward to the regular supply of new books that we are able to purchase with the rewards.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

Congratulations 1N! Sustainability Steve joined your class due to your reliable and thorough monitoring of what students are putting in the Organics bin.

Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable!

Kitchen Garden Club

Over the past few weeks Club members have:

  • Built a trellis tee-pee to support the growth of our beans in the Prep garden.
  • Through a microscope viewed the leaves growing in the gardens. The leaf with the veins is a nasturtium leaf and the other is Warrigal Greens.
  • Made their own salad creations, including dressing, from our freshly harvested leafy greens, beans and herbs.
  • Our tomatoes were not progressing and on advice we harvested early and the students devoured the ‘Pico de Gallo’ or ‘Salsa Fresca’ (green tomato salsa) made by Michelle. 6 diced green tomatoes, 1 small-medium onion diced, 1 bunch coriander leaves chopped, juice from 1 lime, salt to taste
  • Planting, mulching, weeding and worm care.

Donations of plants, seedlings, seeds mulch or soil for the garden are appreciated and can be dropped to the STEAM Centre.

Thank you to our parent co-ordinators Michelle Boutin and Sabine Clark! These two amazing ladies volunteer their time prepping, planning and running activities. Thank you to Kathy Clout from Wallum Nursery for the great donations. And thank you to all our parent/carer, student and teacher volunteers. New members are always welcome.

Digital Tech News

Over the past fortnight, we have held information sessions for our parents regarding the BYO iPad program. From next year, all students in Year 2 to Year 6 will be part of the program. All information from the presentations are located on the school website. We recommend the Apple iPad 5th Generation or 6th Generation devices for the program.

There are three options for the BYO iPad Program.

  1. Buy the iPad from your choice of reseller. Apple and JB Hi-Fi offer 12 months interest free purchases. We have links to these resellers on our school website.
  2. Hire the iPad using the Student Resource Scheme. This option will cost approximately $265 a year. This covers the use of the device, apps and maintenance of the device. Expressions of interest for this option will be sent out early Term 3.
  3. Access the Equity Fleet. If you are experiencing financial hardship, please contact your relevant Deputy Principal to discuss this option before Term 4.

Keep reading the school newsletter for more updates regarding our 2020 BYO iPad Program. If you have any questions, please send an email to our Digital Technology Coaches, Sally Connell and Andrew Ward, via the email address below.

Bayside Beginners’ Music Week

Congratulations to the beginner students who have returned forms and made payment by this week. We are so excited to be participating in this tremendous celebration of music learning with so many schools in our district!

Music Practise Tips – Who?

YOU! Every good musician knows that regular practice is a must, but did you know that careless practice can actually make you worse? Before you tell your parent or your teacher that you have decided not to practice, think about the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and HOW of practice that will help you play better and enjoy music more. Good practice involves your mind, your body, your emotions, and the music. Your parent or teacher may be able to force you to spend time playing the notes, but only YOU can focus your mind and your feeling on the sounds you are producing, so that the music you play is beautiful and expressive.

The Sports Carnival BBQ was successful- thank you to Carol, Dorothy and the lovely volunteers who helped run a BBQ. Thank you to the regular volunteers in the tuckshop - by giving us your time we can keep food fresh, healthy and at a minimal cost to families. Steve Wicks the groundsman has painted queuing lines on the concrete in front of the Gumtree Eatery. With this addition Fridays are no longer a day to dread but are very organised and efficient. Thank you Steve!

Last week we held our annual Mother’s Day Stall. Children were really excited to choose presents for those special ladies in their lives. Thank you to the many volunteers who were able to assist with the stall on both days, and especially to Natalie Herity and Michelle Moffatt for their efforts.
