From the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

We are halfway through Term 1 and plenty is happening at Gumdale State School. Over the coming weeks, students will be going on excursions, performing in music groups and participating in sporting events. We are also hosting our Parent teacher Interviews on Wednesday 20 March, which is a great chance to support your child’s schooling. I highly encourage all parents to make the most of this opportunity.

Please take time to read the email communications and newsletters sent from the school. As we move away from paper correspondence, families will receive digital copies of permission slips and more, so checking emails will ensure you don’t miss deadlines. With this in mind, please ensure the administration office has your current contact details.

Let me draw your attention to our regular reminders about parking in the local community whilst transporting students to and from school. Parents, please be respectful of our local shopkeepers by not using the Eastside Village as a school carpark. More information can be found below in our Reminders from the School.

I’d like to applaud our students across all year levels for their great participation at last week’s Cross Country. While not everyone received a ribbon on the day, there was plenty of resilience and persistence shown by each student who ran. Well done!

Finally, thank you to the Student Council who did a wonderful job of organising the recent fundraiser for GIVIT’s North Queensland flood appeal. Silly Sock Day raised over $2000. Well done to all involved and a special thank you to Kindy Kapers for their contribution. On the same note, our Staff Trivia event raised $440 for Kids Helpline, another very worthy cause. As we like to say at Gumdale, it’s good to give!

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal
Gumdale State School

Reminders from the School

Parking In and Around Gumdale State School

Please be considerate of our community neighbours when dropping off and picking up students around Gumdale State School. A reminder that Eastside Village, our local kindies and Australia Post are not parent carparks.

Supervision is provided at the Tilley Road Stop/Drop/Go until 3:30pm, so consider delaying your afternoon arrival. Car parking is also available along Formosa Road, Tilley Road, New Cleveland Road and Dianthus Street.

Late Slips

All children must be present in their classroom for roll marking at 8:50am. Teachers will mark the roll and close it. Any child not in the classroom will be marked as absent. Children who arrive after the roll has closed will be required to go to the office to collect a LATE SLIP for presentation to their teacher.

Office staff will check and clear the Absence Line before 9:45am and a DAILY UNEXPLAINED ABSENCE report will be run. A generic SMS message will be sent to parents advising of their child’s absence and requesting an explanation.

24/7 Student Absence Line
3902 8399

Phone the Student Absence Line before 9:30am to inform of any/all occasions your child will be away from school. This is a 24hr recorded service, you can call it anytime. The Student Absence Line number is 3902 8399; we suggest you store this number in your phone. Alternatively you can email absence details to admin@gumdaless.eq.edu.au or registered parents can utilise the QParents App. If you receive an SMS message, call the Student Absence Line to explain the absence OR if you believe your child should be at school contact the school office immediately to notify us.

Signing Out Early?

From time to time, you may need to collect your child early from school. This may be in the case of illness, attending an appointment or family emergency. In all cases students must be signed out through the administration office.

Once you have signed your child out, administration staff will issue you with an early departure slip. This must be presented to the classroom teacher before your child can be released into your care (or that of the collecting adult).

Legally the school can only release your child into the care of an adult who is listed on the student’s personal details record as a guardian or emergency contact. Administration staff are able to check these details and verify the identity of the person collecting the child. In the event that a person comes to collect your child and their details are not recorded, administration staff will contact you to seek your instruction.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Wednesday 20 March
3:30 – 8:00pm
Hollis Hall
Bookings online – watch your inbox on Monday 11 March for the booking link!

With interviews being held on Wednesday 20 March, parents will have the opportunity to discuss with teachers the individual reading and writing goals for their child. This meeting also provides the opportunity to discuss the strategies students, parents and teachers can work on together to improve learning outcomes.

Bookings open on Monday 11 March. Please watch your inbox for an email containing all the details and booking link.

Student Led Conferences – Year 5 and 6S

On Tuesday 2 April, some teachers will be facilitating student-led conferences as an alternative to parent teacher interviews. A student-led conference is a conference with parents led by the student. The role of the classroom teacher is a facilitator in the conference process. Students lead parents through a discussion of their work and established academic and social goals. Some of the benefits of student-led conferences are:

  • Students assume greater control of their academic progress.
  • Students accept personal responsibility for their academic performance.
  • Students learn the process of self-evaluation.
  • Students develop organizational and oral communication skills.

Parents of students in Year 5 and 6S (Miss Jess Signorini) will receive a link by email, please watch your inbox on Monday 11 March for this link.

Uniforms at Gumdale State School

At Gumdale State School, the student dress code consists of a school uniform that students are expected to wear when attending or representing our school, travelling publicly to and from school and engaging in school activities out of school hours. Our high uniform expectations help to provide a safe and supportive teaching and learning environment by:

  • Providing ready identification of students and non-students at school;
  • Eliminating distraction of competition in dress and fashion at school;
  • Fostering a sense of belonging; and
  • Developing mutual respect among students through minimizing visible evidence of economic or social differences.

The two components of the uniform that the students are expected to wear include a Formal Uniform and an Everyday Uniform. Suitable enclosed footwear colour is black with white socks.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year, in the second full week in May.

Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that NAPLAN will move online over a two-three year period. This means moving NAPLAN from the current paper-based tests to computer-based assessments commencing from 2018 onwards. This 3 minute video gives a quick explanation on what it all means:

The sitting of the 2019 ICAS exams has been changed by the University of NSW. Students will be required to sit the exams during Term 3 this year and the registration and payment process will commence in Term 2. Please check the school website for the dates. However, please be advised these dates are subject to change.

Prep – Year 1 News

Prep

There has been much excitement in our prep rooms over the last week with the arrival of the Henny Penny chickens. The eggs came first and students and teachers were coming in eagerly each morning to see if any of the chickens had hatched overnight. It was even more exciting when the eggs started to hatch during the day and the students were very quick to notice the first little cracks appearing in the eggs. I can report that chickens grow very quickly and we have been watching as they start to grown real feathers to replace the downy ones they have when they hatch. It has been a great opportunity for our preps to learn about the life cycle of the chicken and to get to act as scientists, observing and recording what they see as the chicks hatch and grow.

Year One

Reading groups are up and running in our year one classrooms and it is great to see so many parents giving of their time to come in and help the teachers during this time.

I am a regular visitor to the classrooms and am enjoying reading with the students and letting them share their writing with me. The year one classes are working with Mem Fox’s book, ‘Possum Magic’ and are creating some wonderful writing pieces using great language.

Year 2-3 News

Sarah Scott,
Deputy Principal
Years 2-3
sscot280@eq.edu.au

This term is flying by, as we have been busily enjoying the wonderful events and experiences that Gumdale State School has to offer. We were delighted to see so many parents and careers support their children in the cross country last week and it was fantastic to see all of the Gumdale students trying their very best.

On Tuesday 19 March the Year 2 students have a ‘Science Rocket’ Incursion. Please ensure that you have returned any permission forms and payment has been made. It looks to be a terrific experience for the students.

Look at what has been happening in the area of digital technologies in Year 2 & 3!

Mrs McLean and her class of creative thinkers have been using the App, Draw and Tell to demonstrate their retell comprehension skills of the story Dogger and The Three Little Pigs. Draw and Tell is an award-winning creative tool that encourages imagination, storytelling and open-ended play. The students have used the App to draw pictures to represent the sequence of the story. By recording their voices and embedding them into the video, they have been able to include the retell dimension. The students excitedly shared their thoughts about the App and why they enjoy using iPads in the classroom.

“I learnt that there are different backgrounds that you can use in the app, Draw and Tell.” Lana 2M

“I like using the iPads in the classroom, because you get to draw pictures from the book and record your voice telling the story.” Jacob 2M

“I like Draw and Tell, because you can draw your learning and tell everyone what you learnt.” Poppy 2M

“I like that you can record your voice and share your learning with the class.” Gabriella 2M

“We use the iPads during reading group time and they help us explain our reading.” Hamish 2M

During a classroom visit into the digital technology savvy 3R, I took on the role of a learner. As the students confidently explained how they have used the iPad to screen record themselves completing mathematically equations, planning for persuasive writing and recording their thinking skills on the digital platform. I was very impressed with their confidence and the quality of their work. I also felt very proud of my new skill. I asked some students from 3R what they think about using iPads in the classroom.

“iPads help you to learn better, become more knowledgeable using Safari and allow you to present your work in a creative way.” Isla 3R

“In the olden days they had to use typewriters and you couldn’t carry these around, as they were too heavy. iPads are much easier and fun to use. I like using Apps such as Book Creator. It is a great way to show your learning and increase your typing skills.” Macklin 3R

Problem Solving Using the High 5

Students in Years 4-6 are to be congratulated for their use of the High 5 to problem-solve social situations with peers in the classroom and playground. When effectively using the High 5, students become proactive in managing their own social interactions and work towards fostering resilience. Classroom teachers have been modelling and promoting the use of the High 5 strategies to support all students in achieving our GROWS value of respect.

Feedback and Goal Setting

Over the past 6 weeks I have had the pleasure of working with students in Year 5 and 6 to discuss their writing, feedback and goal setting. This week students have worked on their writing draft to implement feedback from their teachers. Implementing this feedback enables them to make changes to their work and improve their overall achievement. As students complete their first English assessment task, it is wonderful to hear students talk about how they have made changes to improve their writing and to acknowledge their efforts.

What our students are reflecting upon when it comes to setting learning goals:

Lincoln (Year 5) – “My writing goal is to add more noun and verb groups to my writing. This will make my writing more detailed and the reader can picture the story in their mind. Having a writing goal helps you to improve the small things in your work so your writing will be better and more interesting. I know I’m getting better because my grades are improving this year and they did last year.”

Matilda (Year 5) – “My writing goal is to use more language features in my narrative writing, like similes and metaphors, to make my writing more interesting. Setting goals makes me improve my marks. This happened last year and I think it will help me this year too!”

STEM Learning

Year 1

This term students are investigating light. We have found that when we shine a torch through a coloured filter (cellophane) we can see the colour of the cellophane reflected on the white paper behind it. We now know that we can change the properties of light.

Year 3

Students have been practising their scientific drawing skills creating annotated diagrams showing their knowledge of how heat is produced. All year 3 students have their STEM journal in Showbie. To see your child’s learning in STEM go to the Showbie app on their iPad, or, on any device go to Showbie.com and have your child sign in.

Year 4

Students are investigating the properties of various materials in preparation for their textile product design. We have investigated flammability, absorbency, tensile strength and biodegradability. Students have been reminded to collect some unused textiles and bring into the STEM room by Friday of Week 7. All year 4 students have their STEM journal in Showbie. To see your child’s learning in STEM go to the Showbie app on their iPad, or, on any device go to Showbie.com and have your child log in.

Year 5 & 6

On Friday 22 March our year 5 and 6 students are heading to QPAC and Queensland Museum to attend the World Science Festival Brisbane. The year 6’s will attend a presentation from four world leading scientists and the year 5’s will enjoy a Q & A session with Dr Karl. All will have a teacher guided Museum tour with activities. We also have a limited number of passes to visit the Turtle Hatchery. The deadline for permission and payment has passed. Late submissions will be considered but cannot be guaranteed as this is a ticketed event.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

Well done to our Year 1 and 2 classes that have put up their hands to be Sustainability Rangers. 1N, 1WL, 2R and 2WC you are all doing a wonderful job looking after the Organics bin for your eating area! This week 2WC was awarded Sustainability Steve and had him spend the week in their classroom.

Sustainability Ranger responsibilities are:

  1. Collect the Organics bin from outside the STEM room in the morning and place next to Recycling and Rubbish bins in their eating area.
  2. After second play (1:45-2:00pm) bring their Organics bin to STEM room and after checking and removing incorrect waste place contents into large Organics bin.
  3. Rinse Organics bin and leave upside down on outside sink to dry.
  4. Wash hands with soap in STEM room.

Waste tip – Most chip and muesli bar packaging is silver plastic and unfortunately this cannot go in the yellow lid recycling bin however aluminium foil can.

Kitchen Garden Club

Our Kitchen Garden Clubs have been busy planting, watering and worming. We have filled our bathtub worm farm and set up our garden tower. The students have received their tool licenses and are demonstrating great teamwork.

Some of our plans for this year are:

  • Creating a native ‘Bush Tukka’ garden.
  • Prep and Year 1 Kitchen Garden members will be looking after the Garden Tower. The tower garden is a self-sufficient garden system with worms through the middle fed with organic waste. https://www.gardentower.com.au/
  • The garden beds behind the Resource Centre will have many rotating crops depending on the season and a couple of beds will be dedicated to Asian edibles.
  • Outside the STEAM building we are going to try some giant pumpkins alongside our existing herbs.

Thank you to all our parent/carer, student and teacher volunteers. New members are always welcome. A special thank you to Kathy Clout who has donated an array of seedlings and seeds, and some great tips!

Digital Tech News

A reminder to all families that the Digital Levy subscription form for iPad and non-iPad classes needs to be returned to the Office ASAP. Please be advised that your child will not receive access to our school subscriptions applicable to their year level and class until this form has been returned.

We encourage parents to regularly check in with their child regarding the work they are doing on iPads in the classroom. iPads are a wonderful way of generating discussion about your child’s learning experiences. This can also be a good time to check the device and associated equipment for any damage or warranty issues. Please remind your child that any damage sustained to the device must immediately be reported to their class teacher and parents as set out in the iPad class agreement.

Cybersafety Incursion

On Thursday, students in Years 4 - 6 attended a Cybersafety incursion. The presentation covered:

  • How to create safe and positive online profiles
  • Positive use of the internet and social media
  • How to protect yourself and others online
  • Discussion about permission and why it's important to speak to the adult in your life
  • Account privacy and how to create a strong password

A Cybersafety presentation for students in Year 2 and 3 will be held at a later date during the year.

Online Safety

Recently the media has been reporting that inappropriate material is being targeted at children online particularly via the website YouTube. We would like to remind parents that students are not able to access YouTube while on the school’s Wi-Fi network. The Department has a very strict filtering process for websites before they are deemed appropriate for students and allowed to be accessed at school. As part of their Digital Technology and Health units, students also participate in Cybersafety lessons with their class teacher. Teachers expect students to be on the right app or website at the right time when using iPads or computers.

Students with iPad access at home can have their website access restricted. You can do this by:

Settings - Screen Time - Content and Privacy Restrictions - Content Restrictions - Web Content - Limit Adult Websites

The above setting restricts some access to YouTube. You can also block other sites that you might be concerned about under the ‘Never Allow’ option. However, we request that you do not choose to restrict all websites on the device, as this will interfere with your child’s ability to access class work and resources as set by their teacher.

As parents, please make a point of checking in to see what websites and apps your child is using. By going into the screen time option in Settings, you can view how long you child has been on the device and what websites and apps they have accessed. If you set a screen time passcode, we strongly recommend that you do not share this code with your child.

Settings - Screen Time – Screen Time

Japanese Study Tour

Over the last two weeks, we have hosted a Study Tour of 17 students from Tama Meguro JHS.

Our visiting students have participated in a range of activities to give them a taste of life in an Australian school. This has been a wonderful experience for both the Japanese students, and our students at Gumdale. Our year 6 ‘buddies’ have done an exceptional job and have demonstrated a high level of organisation and maturity and we thank them for their efforts. A huge thank you also goes to all of the staff involved in the preparation and running of the Study Tour.

Always Our Best.

Fundraising

Easter Raffle

The Easter Raffle is well underway and we have had a great response so far. Your child has until 22 March to sell their tickets. There are additional ticket books available at the office if needed. Remember there will be a prize for the child that sells the most ticket books and a prize for the class that collectively sells the most. Please return the sold (and unsold) ticket books and money by 22 March.

Prizes will be drawn on Sunday 29 March and delivered to the winning student’s classroom on Monday 1 April.

Thank you to everyone that has provided donations. We are still seeking donations of Easter eggs, chocolates and baskets to be dropped at the school office. These donations will be made into Easter basket prizes. Please deliver your donations by 22 March.

School Disco

The P&C school disco will be held on Friday, 29 March! This will be the first of two discos the P&C hold each year. For the first disco, Preps will have their celebration during the last session of the day. Preps will be invited to attend an evening disco with the Year 1-3 students in Term 4.

Prep Disco

This fun event is for prep students only and conditions will be adapted from the usual disco for our younger students (not as dark or loud). No food or drink will be available for purchase, so a gold coin is all children will need, along with a crazy hat to add to the fun! There will be dancing and prizes. Students will be fully supervised by their teachers in Hollis Hall. Parents can collect children as usual from their Prep classrooms at 3:00pm.

Evening Disco

The theme for Years 1-6 is Hawaiian Beach Party! Door will open for ticket sales from 5:30pm. Entry is $5, with tickets available at the door (cash and EFTPOS will be available). Sausages, snacks, drinks and novelty items will be available for purchase on the evening and there will be prizes galore! This year the parents’ wet area will feature musical entertainment and will be serving beer and wine.

Junior Disco (Year 1-3) 5:45pm – 7:15pm
Senior Disco (Years 4-6) 7:30pm – 9:00pm

IMPORTANT INFORMATION // PLEASE READ: This event is for Gumdale State School students only. This event will be under lockdown in Hollis Hall/Annex with staff and parent volunteers supervising. No students will be permitted outside the Hall/Annex during the disco. At the end of the disco parents are to collect their children inside the Hall. Kindly ensure your children know who is collecting them and please do not be late.

Pickup times: Junior Disco 7:15pm and Senior Disco 9:00pm.

Messages from the Team

2019 has begun with a bang at YMCA with numerous new programs beginning this term.

Every Monday and Wednesday afternoon we are running a small study group trial, which allows our students to further their classroom knowledge in a stress free environment. Currently we are focusing on age appropriate Literacy and Numeracy skills, and we have plans to further these study areas in the near future. These lessons are currently scheduled to run from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. However, students are not turned away if they wish to continue their learning after the set finish time.

This is not the only new program we have implemented into our service this term. Every other Tuesday and Friday afternoon our lovely Art educator Lesley is giving art education classes focusing on developing one’s creativity. Classes run from 3:30pm to 5:00pm and we encourage students to stay for the full lesson as it allows them to time to understand further the concepts being taught.

Sadly, spot are limited in both programs so if you have any enquiries, contact us as soon as possible!

What has been happening at YMCA Gumdale OSHC?

Do you have an old surfboard at home that needs a bit of YMCA love?

This term we have started a surfboard-revamping group, which has seen 3 run down boards turned into total pieces of child-driven art.

To Infinity and Beyond
(Jade, Nanaia & Leila)

'Sea' You Later
(Connor & Charlotte)

Over three sessions, the children painted the background, stars, and planets from their designs on paper. Throughout painting, they were coming up with new colour combinations and planet designs that they would pitch to either a carer or each other. They collaborated with others and brainstormed new ideas as the painting went on, and continue to approach each other and carers with new ideas that could be added to this board.

After a first attempt at the board, it was painted over with a sea green and a light aqua. The children were asked to draw designs for the board before painting, and everyone decided on an under the water theme. From octopus, turtles and fish, to coral, seaweed and jellyfish, they came up with all the ideas on paper and brought them to life with paint.

What is coming up at Gumdale OSHC?
