Message from the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

Message from the Principal

Welcome to the end of Week 4! It’s been a busy two weeks. What fun our Preps to Year 2s had on Friday for their Junior Athletics Carnival. A great community day supported by our school families and staff – thank you to Mr. Doherty, Miss Goddard, teachers and staff for organising a fun day! Today we are hosting Under 8s day. Follow us on facebook to see photos and receive real-time updates from the school.

As we approach the start of Week 5 in Term 3, we are in top gear. Please note the following reminders from me.

Enrolments

Gumdale State School is enrolment-managed and does not have the capacity to welcome students from outside of catchment. If you do live within catchment and intend to enrol a preppie and sibling to our school in 2019, please submit your paperwork promptly or contact our office team on 3902 8333 to express your intention to do so.

School Opinion Survey

Have your say in this year's suite of School Opinion Surveys by providing your feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.

Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey have been sent home with students. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with internet connection. Each of the online surveys will be open until Friday 24 August 2018.

National Science Week

Next week is national science week and Gumdale State School have organised a host of STEM activities, incursions and showcases. Thank you to Mrs Sheppard and our STEM teachers for all of their coordination and preparation to support. Further details about upcoming STEM events at Gumdale are highlighted further below.

Attendance

It’s important that your child/ren come to school each and everyday. With the exception of illness, please make sure your child turns up each day and on time, ready to learn.

Parking

Many of you may have read my earlier note about parking at Eastside Village. Please respect our neighbours by not parking in tenant spaces for school pick up or drop off. Parents have a range of parking options on the perimeter of our schools grounds, including our Tilley Road carpark, Formosa Road or even Dianthus Street, making use of the pedestrian crossing.

More news and updates from in and around the school are in today’s newsletter so be sure to read on. Last but not least, save the date for Saturday 1 September when our P&C host a family fun day called “Day on the Oval!.” I look forward to seeing all of our Gumdale families at this important fundraising event.

Phil Savill
Principal

P.s. Good luck to all those Gumdale students competing in tomorrow’s State Aerobics Championship at Chandler. I know you will all do your very best!

p.p.s. Don’t forget it’s EKKA Show Holiday on Wednesday of next week and school will be closed.

Reading & Writing

Teachers have been working in year level groups this week to plan upcoming English units of work. A key focus during this time has been the development of learning experiences to challenge and promote student’s critical and creative thinking skills. Teachers are also currently testing students reading levels and working with students to develop individualised learning goals.

Year Level Activities

A busy week across the school with the celebration of early childhood through Under 8s week. We welcomed two local kindergartens to join our school’s special day. Year One students also ventured to IndigiScapes to look at native species in preparation for the writing of an information report. For our Year Two and Five students, sailing lessons has launched at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. Next week sees the celebration of all things science across the school with students engaging in learning opportunities offered by our STEAM department.

Preventing the Spread of Germs

With cold and flu season upon us, parents and carers are asked to keep unwell children at home to reduce the spread of illness. Your co-operation with this precaution is greatly appreciated.

News from the Payment Desk

Statements were emailed out last week. Thank you to all families who are continuing to make payments promptly. If there is a negative amount on the statement this indicates a Credit, which with your approval can be paid on other excursions. Ensure you email admin for this to proceed.

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your students account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

Gumdale STEAM Club (now Kitchen Garden) have this year been working on improving sustainability at Gumdale.

Earlier in the year we participated in a Brisbane City Council workshop investigating our waste. We tipped the contents of the Year 6 eating area bin onto the STEAM room floor. There was a total of 9 buckets of waste! At present all of our eating area waste goes to the rubbish tip and is buried. We call this landfill and it is not a good option. Let us paint this picture for you further. 9 buckets in one eating area in one day. Multiply that by 7 eating areas in the school. Then multiply that by 5 days in the week. Then multiply that by 40 weeks in the school year. That makes 12, 600 buckets or 113,400 litres of landfill per year just from Gumdale student lunch waste!

From this investigation we saw a HUGE opportunity for Gumdale SS to make a difference!

We then tipped the rubbish back onto the STEAM room floor and sorted it. We sorted it into Recycling, Organic and Rubbish.

The Results: From the original 9 buckets of waste - we could recycle 4 buckets and we could compost 3 buckets. Leaving only 2 buckets of rubbish going to landfill. So over one year we could reduce landfill created at Gumdale by 9,100 buckets! That is a significant reduction!

The Plan: Students will start seeing three different bins in Year 3 to 6 eating areas. Followed by the lower school eating areas in the near future. The bins will be marked with Recycling, Organics and Rubbish.

In the Recycling bin you can put paper, cardboard, tin foil and hard plastic. This includes poppers and their straws, foil tuckshop packaging, and hot chocolate cups and lids. This is the same as your yellow lid recycling bin at home. For more detailed information: Brisbane City Council Guide to recycling

In the Organics bin you can ONLY put fresh fruit and vegetable scraps, for example banana peel and apple cores. No processed fruit or vegetable scraps please.

Everything else has to go in the red Rubbish bin. We would like you to start thinking about your lunch waste and choosing the correct bin. STEAM Club members and teachers will be in your eating areas to assist.

Please watch our short video to help inform and inspire you to join us on this journey to improve sustainability at Gumdale.

2018 Camps

Year 6 students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the National Capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Gumdale State School has used this rebate to subsidise expenses for year 6 families throughout terms 3 and 4.

This year there will be a change to our Year 4-6 Camp structure. More information regarding camps will be made available as the camps draw closer. The camps will be as follows:

Year 4 – Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre, Currimundi (5-7 December 2018)
Year 5 – Emu Gully Leadership Camp, Helidon (21-23 November 2018)

Gumdale – A Day on the Oval

Preparations are now well under way for the upcoming Gumdale - A Day on the Oval event taking place on Saturday 1 September. This family fun day is shaping up to be very exciting for the P&C to showcase to the community. Inflatables and animal farm for the kids, face painting, food trucks, live performances, GSS Year Level fundraising stalls and fireworks are all going to be part of the event. Head to the P&C Facebook page to see all the event announcements.

To help make the Gumdale – A Day on the Oval a successful major fundraising event, we are looking for support from the school community in the way of donations. If you’re able to donate any of the following items, this will go a long way to enable the P&C to contribute funds to completing air-conditioning of the classrooms at the school. Items being requested are:-

PREP – Cake Stall; drop by School Admin, the YMCA or a Prep classroom to collect cake trays and fill them with baked goods to be sold from the Cake Stall at the event. Cake tray drop off to the Hollis Hall Kitchen:-

Friday 31 August: 8:00am – 8:45am & 2:30pm - 3:00pm
Saturday 1 September: 9:00am – 11:00am

You can also drop off your filled cake trays to the YMCA on Friday 31 August before 8:30am.

YEAR 1 – Coloured Hair Spray – Are after donations of coloured hair spray. Drop any cans of coloured hair spray into the P&C Donations box in School Admin or the Year 1 classrooms.

YEAR 2 – Tombola – Bring your filled jars and drop off to the Year 2 classrooms or the P&C Donations box in School Admin. We are looking for different sized jars filled with:-

Wrapped lollies

Nail accessories

Hair accessories

Mini cars & small toys

Small board games and card games

Shopkins

Bath goods

Stickers & Stamps

There will also be a prize for the best decorated jar, so have some fun and get creative. The winner of the best decorated jar will be announced at the Gumdale – A Day on the Oval event so make sure you come to the stall to see if your jar has won on the day!

YEAR 4 – Lob-a-Choc - blocks of chocolate, multipack bags of mini chocolates, chocolate bars, boxes of chocolates – basically anything chocolate – to be donated. Drop your chocolate items to the P&C Donations box in School Admin or the Year 4 classrooms.

YEAR 5 – Guess the Number – Are in need of packets of jelly beans, packets of M&M chocolates and marbles. Please drop your items into either the P&C Donations box in School Admin or the Year 5 classrooms.

STUDENT COUNCIL – Pre-Loved Books – Would love to have your good used books donated for their book stall. Drop off your books to either School Admin, Miss Pilgrim’s classroom or Mrs Auliffe’s classroom.

If you have a student in Year 3 and/or Year 6, your help is needed with donations to the other year levels. Grab a cake tray, buy a can of hairspray or fill a jar with goodies to help the other year levels with their fundraising stall. Every little bit of help will go a long way with raising money to support the students at the School.

We can’t wait to see the local community get behind this event!

Don’t forget all meal orders for the Tuckshop for first and second breaks must be ordered through Flexischools by 8:30am each day. Only snacks, drinks and slushies are sold over the counter for cash (except for Prep students) during first and second breaks.

Students who have made an order to purchase something frozen, or a plain milk cup or something with custard or yoghurt, will need to come to the Tuckshop to collect the item. A green smiley face or a red star on your bag means you must bring the bag to the Tuckshop to collect the item which can’t be sent to your classroom.

Uniform Shop News

Mondays: 8:15am – 9:30am
Thursdays: 8:15am – 9:30am

The Uniform Shop now has all sizes of Hoodies available for purchase.

A reminder that the Uniform Shop has three everyday options for girls to wear with their GSS polo shirt. We stock a formal skort, everyday or sports skort and everyday unisex shorts. Our volunteers in the Uniform Shop can assist you with finding the right option for your child to wear.

Single use plastic bags will no longer be supplied in the Uniform Shop for over the counter purchases in line with Queensland’s total ban.

Donations of second hard uniform items which are in good condition are most welcome. A donations box has been placed outside the door of the Uniform Shop.

There is a small supply of second hand uniform items now available for purchase, prices as marked. Included in the items are some Prep hats if you’re looking to purchase a ‘spare’ hat for your child.

We still have a small selection of House Armbands available for purchase, unfortunately if your in Moreton we have sold out.

Don’t forget we are located on Level 1 of Block A so drop by and see our friendly volunteers when the shop is open.

Update from the Fundraising Team!

Father’s Day

With Father’s Day only a few weeks away, the fundraising team will be holding a Father’s Day stall on Thursday 30 and Friday 31 August. In the upcoming weeks parents will be notified which day your child’s class will have the opportunity to visit the stall. In preparation, the fundraising team welcome any donations of wrapped individual chocolates or lollies. If you are able to provide a donation, please drop off to the P&C box in the admin office by Friday 24 August.

Fun Run

The annual fun run will be held on 14 September. This is a great opportunity for our kids to get outdoors and have heaps of fun whilst raising money for their school. Children have the added bonus of earning fabulous prizes! Parents and Carers please watch out for the sponsorship packs which will be coming home this week.

Volunteering

We will soon be looking for volunteers to assist at both of the events mentioned above. Working at the Father’s Day stall is a great first step into volunteering, seeing the children make their choices is a lovely experience. If you would like to volunteer for any of these or any future event, or have any questions about what is involved, please email fundraising@gumdalesspc.org.au and you will be notified via SignUp Genius when volunteering opportunities arise throughout the year.
