Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill
We are over halfway through the final term of 2019, and while it’s been a busy year, there is still plenty happening right throughout the school. Next week we open our doors to next year’s Prep students who will attend Prep Orientation; it’s sure to be an exciting day for these families. Year 5 Gumdale students with leadership aspirations are working through the Student Leadership application process for 2020 positions and our Year 6 students are busy preparing for graduation. The Gumdale Gives program kicks off next week and I hope all our families will consider how they can contribute to these worthy causes.
Music Night
Tuesday’s annual Night of Music showcased the effort our talented music students have given all year. The evening was attended by a large audience and I acknowledge each student who was involved. Thank you to the many staff members who assisted on the night and the parents who encourage their children in their musical practise each week. Congratulations to our Cultural Captains Ashleigh and Ruby and our dedicated music team: instrumental teacher and Band Conductor Mrs Vivienne Thomas, music teacher and Xylophone Conductor Ms Michelle Moran, and the head of our music department and Choir Conductor Ms Lauren Slater. Thanks also to Choir accompanist Mrs Fotini Panagopoulos and music teacher aide Mrs Julie Pender for their contributions. I look forward to seeing the continued growth of our music program in 2020.
Achievements
Congratulations to students who have participated in many special events over the past fortnight. Our boys and girls touch football teams showed great teamwork and determination at the All Schools Competition last weekend. On Wednesday, we had several students attend the book launch for the Young Writer’s Program with author Samantha Wheeler. Next week a group of students will attend Wellington Point SHS for the ACES Debating competition; we wish them the very best of luck. We are proud to support our students in these opportunities to aim high and achieve success in a variety of areas. Well done to each and every student.
Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

Remembrance Day
On Monday 11 November, the school community stopped and took a minutes silence to remember those members of the armed forces who have lost their lives serving their country and those who continue to serve and protect our country now.
Outdoor Learning Day in Prep
Last Thursday our Prep students engaged in a day of outdoor learning. The activities on offer included a nature collage, nature scavenger hunt, ball games, drawing and completing a dino dig in the sand pit. The students, teachers and teacher aides had a wonderful time taking their learning outdoors.
As you have probably noticed, construction has commenced in our Outdoor Learning Space. Students throughout the school are chatting about the changes they are seeing daily. We look forward to its completion and working with the students in this innovative, yet natural environment.

Sensory Poems Year 1
Students in Year 1 are listening to and exploring chants, rhymes and poems. They are focusing on rhyme, repetition and alliteration in texts. Below are some examples of the Year 1’s exploring poetry using the five senses.
A Marshmallow Tastes
A marshmallow tastes like a squishy pillow and a soft
bed
It has a slight flavour to it
And a powdery and squishy refreshing sweet flavour
It is nice and sugary
By Ben 1HC
A Bunch of Flowers
Our bunch of flowers is very colourful,
And all of the flowers smell good when you smell them.
Some of the flowers are purple,
The purple ones have pollen inside.
There is a big orange one,
And it has green seeds inside it.
The stem is very hairy.
One of the flowers is white with red stripes,
The petals look just like pencil sharpenings.
All of the flowers are very pretty.

Year 2 Poetry
The Year 2 students are reading and listening to a range of poems to create an imaginative poetry reconstruction. Below are some sample of the wonderful work happening in 2DS.

Year 3 Christmas Cards

Some thoughtful students in Year 3 have made Christmas cards which will be distributed to farming families via Rural Aid. The cards included beautiful illustrations and heartfelt messages. This lovely gesture is a great demonstration of the Gumdale Way.
Year 5 Persuasive Writing
5G have been discussing and writing about the pros and cons of having an extended lunch break. Read the persuasive texts below and see if they can alter your opinions.

Gumnuts Choir
Last week at our Junior School assembly, we heard a beautiful performance by our Gumnuts Choir. The Gumnuts choir is made up of Year 1 and Year 2 students. It is a huge, yet rewarding commitment to be part of a choir. These students give up their playtime once a week to practice as a group. I commend the choir members for being reliable, working together as a team and for their persistence. I would also like to acknowledge the work that Miss Slater does with the choir and the parents that came along to the assembly to support their child. It was wonderful to see them on stage again at Tuesday’s Music Night.
Working Together Safely
In the classroom we use encouraging language to motivate others to do their best. We treat others how we want to be treated. This includes listening to others’ ideas, opinions and including others in games and activities. In the playground we pick up our litter, remain seated during eating times and get along with others.
Student Council
Red Nose Day
It was wonderful to see our community accessorized for Red Nose Day on Friday 1 November. The Student Council is proud to have raised over $940 for the SIDS Foundation! Thank you to everyone for their amazing support!

Hour of Code

International Computer Science Education Week will be celebrated by Gumdale State School in Week 8. Last year over 100 million people around the world participated in the Hour of Code and this will be Gumdale’s fourth year.
The theme this year is ‘Computer Science for Good’.
Inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the Hour of Code will highlight how we can all use computer science to make a positive impact on our world, from writing apps to solve a local problem, to using innovative ideas in data science to address global challenges.
All students will complete an Hour of code during their regular STEM lesson. Prep students will have a special session in Week 9 & 10.
For more information or to try at home go to the Hour of Code website here. It contains great free resources for budding Computer Scientists!
Year 1 STEM
Year 1 have been busy working on their farm unit. We have been investigating animals and their habitats, in particular ants. In week 3 the students had to make their own ant from plasticine and recycled materials and then label the body parts. Here are some of the ants created.

Year 4 STEM
Year 4 have been learning about how the Earth’s surface changes over time because of natural processes and human activity. The students have investigated weathering and erosion to see how they fit into the Rock Cycle and what we can do to protect our environment from excess erosion.

Year 6 STEM
Year 6 students have been investigating various changes to substances and from their observations; they have been classifying them as reversible or irreversible changes and chemical or physical changes.
The students have been applying their scientific knowledge to write a story about the changes food makes in the human digestive system.

Waste Free Wednesday
Every Wednesday (and every other day) aim to bring a wrapper free lunch. Together we are on our way to becoming a ZERO WASTE SCHOOL!
Sustainability @ Gumdale

Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable! Sustainability Steve has spent time with 2M and 4D. Keep up the great work!

STEM Clubs
Kitchen Garden Club
With the weather getting hotter we have been busy watering. Most plants are growing well, especially our giant pumpkin – if you haven’t seen it yet check it out, it’s in the first planter box opposite the hall (but please remember: looking only).
Our Harvest Afternoon Tea is fast approaching and we have been trying out recipes using our fresh produce. Students are researching recipes that feature the foods we are growing in our gardening. The watermelon-mint ice-blocks are perfect on a hot day! Easy, refreshing and healthy.
Blend 5 cups of watermelon, 2 tablespoons of fresh mint, juice and zest of 1 lime and 1 tablespoon of honey (optional). Pour into moulds (we used ice cube and mini-cupcake trays with toothpicks). Freeze. Enjoy!!!
We are seeking some horse manure to apply to our garden beds over the summer holidays, cutlery and reusable plastic plates, bowls and cups. Please drop at the STEAM Centre or contact Amanda Sheppard and we can pick up.

Ozobots
This Term the Digital Technology Coaches have been working with the Year 2 classes to explore the wonderful world of Ozobots. We have been very fortunate to have a full class set on loan from CSER Digital Technologies Lending Library in Adelaide until the end of the year. These pint-sized robots are highly-engaging and allow students to code using lines and coloured pens or iPads. The students have shown great creativity and problem-solving skills when using the robots to guide them through different courses and solve problems.
Following their first session with the robots, 2B decided that they would write poems about the Ozobots. You can see a couple of wonderful examples below.
Ozobot
Ozobot, Ozobot, follows a line and it is fine.
Ozobot, Ozobot, goes slow, off you go.
Ozobot, Ozobot, follows the track, it is black.
Ozobot, Ozobot, flash then dash.
Ozobot, Ozobot, land on red, go to bed.
Ozobot, Ozobot, spin you get thin.
Ozobot, Ozobot, you are a lot!
By Cooper
Ozobot
The Ozobot was red,
So he went to bed.
The Ozobot was green,
So he was never seen.
The Ozobot flashed,
Into a dash.
When it was black,
He was on track.
The Ozobot was fast,
So he was not last.
The Ozobot was in a maze,
So he was a gaze.
The Ozobot was dancing,
So he was prancing.
By Brohley
Ozobot
Ozobot, Ozobot what do you follow?
Black and white lines and make a U-turn.
Ozobot, Ozobot go fast go fast and off you go.
Ozobot, Ozobot follow the line and red goes to bed!!!

Physical Literacy
Our school recently secured funding from Sport Australia to run a Sporting Schools program in Touch Football throughout term 3.
We know the students loved this program and it was a great way for children to find their 30 at school, however, while adults need 30 minutes of physical activity a day, children need 60. So, as well as finding 30 at school, they need to be finding 30 at home.
Sport Australia has provided us with some useful information on how parents and carers can continue to nurture a child’s participation in sport and physical activity and find their 30 at home.
Physical literacy provides the foundation for a lifelong connection to sport and physical activity. It is about developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours that give us the confidence and motivation to move more and lead an active, healthy life. You can help develop your child’s physical literacy by creating good habits with daily physical activity by increasing the opportunities for play-based activities at home. Entice your children away from screen-time and teach them how to climb a tree, fly a kite, kick a footy or go for a bush walk together as a family. Encourage your children to help choose and plan the activities, set goals and talk about how they feel while engaging in the activities. As a bonus, research has shown that children who are physically active achieve greater academic success and maintain higher attention levels during class at school.
See more examples of how you can support your child to develop their physical literacy and some activities you can do together as a family:
https://www.sportaus.gov.au/findyour30/challenge
We can all develop our physical literacy at any stage of life, so why not do it together! Find a new sport or physical activity you can try with your family this term.
Keep moving!

The Power of Deep Breathing
Teaching children breathing exercises provides them with a simple but effective strategy to slow down, both mentally and physically, help them to take notice of how they are feeling and to relax or calm down when faced with overwhelming emotions.
Deep breathing has been proven to relieve stress and anxiety due to its physiological effect on the nervous system. Breathing slowly and mindfully activates parts of the brain to inhibit stress-producing hormones and trigger a relaxation response in the body. Read more here.
The best way to teach children breathing exercises is when they are in a calm state, so they come naturally when they are ‘in the heat of the moment’. Another important tip is to try to make your exhale longer than your inhale. This is because exhaling is linked to the parasympathetic nervous system, which influences our body’s ability to relax and calm down.
Some easy breathing exercise ideas are below. For more, click here.

Gumdale Gives
This Christmas season we are once again supporting Micah Projects and GIVIT who assist those less fortunate within the community.

On Thursday 21 November, we will be collecting brand new, unwrapped toys for GIVIT to donate to children living in care. Toys can be dropped at the hall from 8:00am-9:00am. We are also looking for donations of medium/large packing boxes to pack the toys in. If you have any you are willing to donate, please drop them off to the hall foyer from next week.

Then throughout Week 8 (Monday 25 November – Friday 29 November), we will be calling for donations of non-perishable food items for Micah’s Annual Christmas Food Hamper Appeal. You can drop your donations off to the box in the office throughout the week.
Thank you in advance for your support of these worthy causes.

Gardens & Cooking
We’ve been getting our garden growing. The children have planted lots of seeds such as rockmelon, watermelon, carrot and corn. The kids have really been taking charge of this project by asking to water the gardens and checking in on the growing shrubs. Cooking with the staff has also been a HUGE hit with the children. They love being able to watch and help afternoon tea be made and bake some treats. We have programmed a week around cooking because the kids are loving it that much!
Special Activities
Children have been enjoying so many imaginative activities each week including construction competitions, face painting and oobleck-making! Oobleck is a sensory slime paste, that is made up of corn flour and water and the kids think it is so cool. They enjoy running their hands through it and picking what colour they want it to be.
We also had sensory week, which included making coloured noodles, kinetic sand, loo putty, play dough and playing with sticky lizards.
We have even created a growing tree in our sign in / out area. The growing tree has all the children’s names and thumb prints on it. This is to show we are all learning and growing together as a GOSHC community.

We are looking for new volunteers to help us out in Tuckshop. We can only operate this busy Tuckshop and keep prices low with your help, otherwise it would not be possible. On a daily basis we need one volunteer then at the end of the week we need at least three. At the moment we are struggling on a Friday. There are many ways you can help: washing the dishes, folding pizza boxes, filling the drinks fridge or sticking labels on bags. All these jobs can be done in one hour! Many hands make light work.
