From the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill
What a busy Term 3 we have had here at Gumdale. Students have certainly worked hard in the classroom and have excelled in many other programs including Year 5 and 6 camps, our music program, the sailing program with RQYS and various incursions for digital technologies and STEM.
Teacher Aides were recently acknowledged during Teacher Aides Day. The valuable work they do each day is appreciated by everyone at Gumdale.
Term 4 will see all students involved in our Learn to Swim Program with Aquatic Achievers at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, concluding with the Junior Swimming Carnival. Year 4 students will attend camp at Currimundi and we will also celebrate the achievements of our Year 6 students at Graduation.
I would like to send my best wishes to all students, staff and families for a restful and safe time over the school holidays. I look forward to seeing you all back for Term 4.
Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

News from the Payment Desk
Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions
Three weeks after an excursion has taken place, One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your student’s account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.
Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.
Prompt payment of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you. Payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.
Paying your school invoices
All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date.
Please note that payments can be made one of three ways:
- Using the QParents App.
- Using the BPOINT Payment Gateway https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or from the invoice using the BPOINT link.
- In person at our Administration Office during office hours (8:15am-3:30pm). No cash will be accepted.

Excursions
Many year levels have participated in excursions and camps over the past fortnight, linking classroom learning to real-life experiences. A valuable part of our classroom program, excursions contribute to student engagement and enable the development of deeper understandings through hands on experiences.
Over the last fortnight, both our Prep and Year 4 students spent a day on the bay with Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre learning about our local environment and ways to protect our ecosystems and living things. Our Year 1 students were visited by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service for a fire education and safety session. In Year 3, a sustainable visual arts workshop provided by Reverse Garbage highlighted the importance of sustainable practices. Our Year 5 students attended Emu Gully Camp learning how to work in teams and support each other in preparation for their school leadership role next year.
Thank you to our classroom teachers for planning and supporting such rich learning experiences for our students this fortnight!

Reading
The additional time over the holiday period provides the perfect opportunity for students to relax and read. Reading is one of the most important skills required for students to become successful at school. Take the time and make the most of the holiday break by visiting your local library. Stock up on old favourites and explore new authors.

Holidays
Exciting learning opportunities are on offer this holiday break for students participating in Code Camp and for our Elite Sailors competing in Central Queensland. We would like to wish all Gumdale families a safe and relaxing holiday break. We look forward to seeing you back in two weeks for another wonderful term of learning.

Year 6
“This term in STEM we have been learning about energy. Our assessment was to create our own mini energy source that would turn on a light bulb in a circuit. My group and I used an orange as our energy source but other groups used lemons, potatoes, mini windmills and more. Our circuit has four oranges in it all connected with copper wires, galvanised screws and has wires attached to the switch and the light bulb. It was fun to design and create an energy source but was challenging at the same time. I learned a lot from this unit like how a circuit works, different types of energy and much more.” Danica 6R

Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable! Sustainability Steve has spent time with 6R and 1HC. Keep up the great work!

Kitchen Garden
|
Kitchen Garden Prep and Year 1 Year 2-6 We meet at the STEM room and new members are always welcome. |
With the weather being quite warm, dry and windy we have been busy with a lot of watering. Students have been busy planting seeds and seedlings such as fennel and radishes. Our Prep and Year 1’s are attempting to grow cotton and our seeds have germinated!
The highlight for most students was our harvest of cabbages which we turned into a yummy slaw. The students loved harvesting the fresh produce, shredding carrots, making herbal salt for the dressing and of course tasting their salad. Many club members agreed that it was delicious and some even got second helpings.
This week we harvested our baby carrots and enjoyed fresh with a drizzle of olive oil infused with fresh herbs. Our broccoli is finally starting to bud and hopefully our cauliflower is not far behind.
Our native bees (and other pollinators) are busy pollinating our bush lemon tree so we should have a lovely crop of lemons next year.
Article contributed by parent volunteer Sabine Clark
Donations of animal manure, plants, seedlings, seeds, mulch or soil for the garden are appreciated and can be dropped to the STEAM Centre.

Year 3-6 Robotic Workshops
Over the past fortnight, our Year 3 to 6 students participated in Robotic workshops. Year 3 and 4 students used LEGO WE DO and were introduced the concept of ‘automation’ and were set a task to design and build a solution to a problem. The Year 5 and 6 students used Mindstorm EV3 to program the robot to complete a challenge. Students and teachers found these workshops very engaging and learnt a lot about coding and robotics and the role they play in our future.

Your Guide to Being Safe on YouTube

What is YouTube and why do people use it?
YouTube is video hosting service that is owned by Google. It allows users to upload and share video content on a platform that is accessed by millions of people every day. YouTube is the world’s 2nd largest Social Media platform. It is a platform to watch videos, listen to music and educate yourself or your children.
YouTube is a safe and powerful entertainment tool, as long as it’s used correctly, whether you are watching or uploading videos. YouTube is highly regulated and governed by Google, so if they find the content of your video breaches their community standards, they will delete it without hesitation. Users must be at least 13 years old before they can start uploading videos to YouTube. This is also the minimum age for creating a Google account, according to US law and their Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which governs most social media platforms.
We recommend that you consider the following steps:
1. Set up a family account
Setting up a shared family account on YouTube lets you see the videos your kids watch and upload, as well as the information they share. You can set up a family account in the same way you set up a new Gmail account. Here are the steps:
- Log out of your account
- Go to Gmail.com
- Click Create an account, and fill out the form.
- You’ll need to link it to an existing email account that isn’t already linked to a Google identity.
- Then you can set up your YouTube channel. You can also set up a shared family calendar, and a shared inbox for family emails if you choose.
- Any videos viewed on the account will show up in the History button on the left.

2. Turn Restricted Mode ‘On’
YouTube has millions of videos with all kinds of content, including a large percentage of inappropriate content for children. Whether you are watching a tutorial, music video or other YouTube content, you can eliminate a lot of potentially offensive videos by switching to “restricted mode on.”
It’s quite hidden but YouTube does have a Restricted Mode that will block most (but not all) objectionable content. However, you will have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the home page to find it.
At the bottom of the YouTube homepage:
- Scroll down until you see the “Restricted Mode: Off” icon.
- Click this and select “Safety: On.”

3. Read the YouTube Safety Centre
There is some great information in the YouTube safety centre – you can access it via the link here.

Gumtree Eatery
Busy Fridays
Starting in Week 1 Term 4 we will be trialling a new earlier cut off time of 8:00am on Fridays for all FIRST BREAK orders. This will enable the convenors to have more time to prepare & cook meals on the busiest day of the week. We have a minimum of 360 orders every Friday! With limited volunteers this is always a struggle so one extra hour for cooking time will help us immensely. This will not affect Late Lunch Orders or Second Break orders. Thank you for your understanding.
A few reminders
If you need to CANCEL an order on the day please call Tuckshop direct or call the admin office up until 8:45am (8:00am on Fridays) as we do not always have time to check emails throughout the day. If the food has been made you will still be charged and cannot be refunded or moved to another day.
Late Lunch orders
Late lunch orders can be made via Flexischools up until 10:30am or via the admin office any time. *Please note: if a child comes to the Tuckshop at break time and has no food, they are sent to the office where the admin staff will call the parent to advise. The student can then be offered a Late Lunch with parents approval.
Orders via the admin office will need to be PAID BY CASH directly to Tuckshop, an IOU will be sent home with your child. Please remember to pay your IOU promptly as we have many outstanding.

Sushi
Sushi will be available to order on Wednesdays from Week 2 in Term 4 and will be available until 27 November. Orders need to be placed by 9:00pm on Tuesdays via Flexischools.
Volunteering
We are looking for new volunteers to help us out in Tuckshop. We can only operate this busy Tuckshop and keep prices low with your help, otherwise it would not be possible. On a daily basis we need one volunteer, and at the end of the week we need at least three. Fridays in particular are very busy and having an extra few pairs of hands makes a big difference. There are many ways you can help, washing the dishes, folding pizza boxes, filling the drinks fridge or sticking labels on bags all can be done in one hour. Many hands make light work!
There will be a new link to the signup page next Term.
