Reminders from the School
School Opinion Survey

The annual School Opinion Survey will be issued to parents and staff on Monday 29 July 2019. The survey can be completed online up to Friday 30 August.
Surveys will be sent home in an envelope with the eldest child. The survey is completed online, and surveys do not need to be returned to school. In addition, a random sample of Year 5 & 6 Students will complete the survey at school prior to 30 August.
Parents who have difficulty accessing computers or internet at home can contact the administration office for assistance in completing the survey. Everyone is encouraged to complete their survey before 30 August to ensure that their opinion is included in our schools’ reports, which we will receive later this year. The reports will help our school and Education Queensland to further understand how to better meet the needs of our community.

News from the Payment Desk
Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions
Three weeks after an excursion has taken place, One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your student’s account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.
Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.
Prompt payment of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you. Payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.
Paying your school invoices
All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date.
Please note that payments can be made one of four ways:
- Online using the BPOINT Payment Gateway https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or from the invoice using the BPOINT link
- Phone banking via BPOINT IVR (1300 631 073)
- Using the QParents App or
- In person at our Administration Office during office hours (8:00am-3:30pm)

Welcome Back to Term 3
All students returned from the break and settled quickly into school routine. The term was off to a productive start with Year 3 and 5 students commencing sailing lessons last week and our Year 6 students attending camp in Canberra. Next week keep an eye out for our NAIDOC celebrations.
Words are Important
The importance of using ‘kind’ and ‘strong’ words when speaking with friends has been an early focus this term. Students have been involved in regular sessions identifying the impact of using these powerful words to support positive interactions with peers at school.
|
‘Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.’ |
GROW - Organisation

Our whole school focus for GROW development this term is the skill of organisation. Students are encouraged and supported in the achieving whole school organisational behaviours throughout the term.
- I go to the right place at the right time with the right equipment.
- I have my name labelled on all my belongings.
- I take home communication and deliver it to my guardians and promptly return them if required.
- I leave my valuables at home.
- I follow the school routines before, during and at the end of school each day.
BYOD iPad Classes 2020
Information regarding the school transition to full BYOD in 2020 for students in Years 2-6 was emailed to parents last week. All Year 1 parents and parents of students currently in non-iPad classes are asked to complete the expression of interest form by clicking HERE indicating either their purchase or hire of an iPad in 2020.
Further information on the program can be found below in the Digital Tech News, or on the school website here.
Student Council

NAIDOC which stands for (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee) is an annual event held in Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is important, as a school and as a community, that we spend the time talking about this week and discussing the real facts about Indigenous cultures and histories.
The theme for NAIDOC week 2019 is Voice. Treaty. Truth. The Gumdale Sate School Student Council have worked with Mrs McAuliffe to put together some NAIDOC week activities during our first breaks next week. There will be opportunities to create indigenous music, listen to dreamtime stories, create works of art and chat to indigenous elders.

On the Friday the student councillors have organised a fundraiser called The Great Book Swap. To participate in The Great Book Swap, all students have been asked to bring along a book to donate and a gold coin. This will take place in the annex of Hollis Hall at first break on Friday 2 August. All of the money collected on the day goes to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation . Each donation helps provide books and literacy programs to remote communities where they are needed most. We look forward to seeing everyone getting involved.

New Playground Equipment
Last term, the Student Council purchased some new playground equipment with money raised from the National Day Against Bullying and Violence. Our students are really enjoying visiting the courts and playing with the new equipment. A huge thank you to our Student Council for raising awareness about saying ‘No! To Bullying.’ and running the fundraiser and thank you to our school community for their support.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities.
As well as being fun, the Premier's Reading Challenge aims to boost children’s literacy skills by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure and learning, to develop their imagination, and to cultivate a passion for literature. Last year, an outstanding 181,000 students from 1012 schools took part in the challenge reading a total of 2.46 million books.
Forms have been sent home to students, additional forms can be downloaded here.
Completed forms can be returned to the Resource Centre by the end of the challenge, no later than Friday 23 August.
STEAM News

National Science Week
As part of our school’s commitment to provide engaging and authentic STEM learning opportunities for our students, we have organised a visit from Queensland’s premier science production, Street Science - a team of passionate educators who use exciting and interactive stage demonstrations to make science learning SERIOUSLY FUN!
This year, to help us celebrate National Science Week 2019 ‘Destination Moon: more missions, more science’, Street Science are performing a brand new stage show “MISSION ACCEPTED…” at our school on Tuesday 13 August. It will be a spectacular show, using breath-taking demonstrations to delve into the dizzying details of space travel, communication and astronaut survival.
It’s a truly engaging, exciting and educational whole-school event which will inspire our students to challenge their understanding of space exploration and be cheering in celebration of science learning. Don’t let your little Earthlings miss out!

STEM Learning
Year 3
Is it living? For their Biology unit, students are required to complete journal entries of living and non-living things they observe around the school, at home or on their travels. Some students have chosen to bring specimens into school! No living animals please.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable!

Sustainability Steve spent the week with 1WL! A special mention goes to Ryan and Celeste for checking the contents of the Organics bin and removing incorrect items.
Kitchen Garden
Kitchen Garden Club resumed this week with much excitement as our ‘Giant’ pumpkin seeds have germinated and started to grow! Our gardens needed a little TLC after the holidays and students spent time weeding and watering. We also tended to our worm farms and compost bins. Donations of plants, seedlings, seeds mulch or soil for the garden are appreciated and can be dropped to the STEAM Centre.

- If your child is currently in Year 1, please complete the digital form here
- If your child is currently in a non-iPad class in Years 2-5, please complete the digital form here
Families who have expressed interest in hiring an iPad through our Student Resource Scheme will receive more information in the coming weeks.
Avatars
Part of our Cybersafety message to students is to keep their private information private when online. We also encourage students to view pictures of themselves as their private information. When setting up accounts online, students should consider using an avatar instead of their actual picture. Photos can leave subtle clues about ourselves, which allow predators, identity thieves and others to pick up important information (e.g. school uniform).
It is important that as educators and parents we reinforce to children that not every detail of your life has be to be put online for everyone. Make sure you check in with your child to see what information and images they are putting online about themselves. Students in 2WC had fun making avatars with their teacher during their Cybersafety unit.

Music Practise Tips – How?
This is a VERY important question! Many students practise by playing straight through a piece or other assignment (often as quickly as possible) as if they were at a recital, then go on to the next thing, no matter what happened. Money won't buy better playing, but well spent practise time will. Here are some hints for getting the most for your practise "dollar."
- Set goals of what you would like to accomplish in each practise session
- Be sure you know what the passage should sound like
- Work on the most challenging spots first
- Break the music down into small sections (How do you eat an elephant? - One bite at a time!)
- Repeat the passage many times AFTER you get it right
- Before you end each practise session, play the entire piece, and enjoy!

Messages from the Team
A big welcome to back to all our wonderful families, we hope the holidays treated you well and you are feeling fresh and ready to take on term three. As many of you will know this is our final term here at Gumdale, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the families, Gumdale SS and its team for making our last five years here memorable!
What we’ve been doing
Over the holidays our children had a wonderful time participating in six incursions and service activities. Our favourite was clock creating and decorating. Both staff and students had a great time using their artistic flair to develop their own personalised masterpiece
