From the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

The end of Semester 1 is upon us and I have been very pleased to see the solid effort students have demonstrated in the classroom over the past two terms. It was great to present certificates to such a large number of students at the recent Principal’s Morning Tea. Congratulations to each one.

The cleaning and grounds team were recently acknowledged and treated to breakfast to start their day. We appreciate the great job they do each day to help keep our school tidy and well maintained.

Congratulations to Carmel Herbert who has been appointed Acting Principal at Runcorn State School beginning in Term 3. I would like to thank Carmel for the work she has done at Gumdale and wish her all the best in her new position.

Finally, I wish all staff, students and families a safe and happy holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back in Term 3.

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

News from the Payment Desk

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place, One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your student’s account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.

Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.

Prompt payment of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you. Payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.

Paying your school invoices

All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date.

Please note that payments can be made one of four ways:

  1. Online using the BPOINT Payment Gateway https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or from the invoice using the BPOINT link
  2. Phone banking via BPOINT IVR (1300 631 073)
  3. Using the QParents App or
  4. In person at our Administration Office during office hours (8:00am-3:30pm)

As yet another busy term comes to a close, we would like to thank our wonderful teachers, teacher aides and students for the incredible amount of work they have put into their studies and extra-curricular activities. In the last week alone, Gumdale SS students have participated in the P-2 Athletics Carnival and the Prep students travelled to Trevena Glen for a wonderfully hands-on farm experience. Our Sports Aerobics teams competed at the State Championship on the weekend and brought home 6 Gold, 1 Silver and 5 Bronze medals. Congratulations to all of the students, we are all so proud of them! These amazing events would not be possible without the support we receive from our dedicated parent community.

As the communication begins to filter out for upcoming Term 3 excursions, events and incursions, please ensure that you are checking your emails regularly and signing the digital permission form as well as making the payment. We are finding that many of the permission forms are not completed before the due date and this creates additional work for the teaching and administration staff. Thank you in advance for your support with these forms.

Please have a safe, enjoyable and relaxing holiday with your children.

Sailing in Term 3

Sailing will commence in Week 1 of Term 3 for Year 3 and year 5 students. We are aiming for 100% participation in these lessons so ensure that you have filled in all of the necessary permission forms online.

Prep – Year 1

It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through this school year. It has been a great semester one in the Early Years` sector and I am especially proud of how well our preps have settled into Gumdale. The learning that continues to happen in our classrooms everyday always amazes me and reminds me how lucky we are to do the work we do.

I am very excited to be taking on the role of acting principal at Runcorn State School next term and am looking forward to new challenges and learning new things. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work closely with my teachers throughout this semester and thank them so much for all their hard work and dedication. I have also loved working with the junior students, listening to their stories, and sharing their delight as they acquired new skills and knowledge. I will look forward to hearing about the great work that will continue at Gumdale and wish all in the community a safe and restful break.

School Council

The School Council met on 14 June, and welcomed for their first meeting its three new members, community representative Craig Thomas (CEO of Wynnum Manly Leagues Club which is a major supporter of GSS), elected parent representative Bridget Kinch and elected staff representative Leah Riemann. The new members have been allocated to Working Parties – Leah Riemann to Student Engagement, Bridget Kinch to HR Recruitment & Development and Craig Thomas to Community Partnerships. Arrangements will be made for induction training for the new members of Council on the role and expectations of Council members.

An important area of interest of Council has been the P&C’s undertaking of the provision of OHSC. Council was pleased to be informed that the P&C has received Provider Approval to operate the OHSC for the school and that from 24 September it will have a fully operational service.

Beata Sade was selected by Council to be the staff member to receive the Staff Recognition Award for Term 2. Currently teaching Year 2 at Gumdale State School, Beata is a much valued team member and colleague. Beata is in her third year of teaching at the school and is an iPad class teacher and a sector representative in the area of Critical and Creative Thinking.

The Principal, Mr Savill, presented his Annual Report 2018 to the School Council. In his verbal presentation he detailed the growth of the school both in size and in its achievements for the year. Class sizes were on average slightly less in 2018 and the academic performance in fundamentals of literacy and numeracy continued to improve as shown in the NAPLAN results. Co-curricular activities expanded during the year, and the school is at the forefront in sports such as sailing and aerobics, and continuing to develop in technology and music. The school has a significant ongoing focus on STEM and on professional development of staff, and the iPad classes are proving to be popular and successful.

Council endorsed the draft Behaviour Management Plan 2019, and the importance of parents being aware of the expectations the school has on behaviour and the GROW principles. Council noted the reports of excellent behaviour at the ANZAC Day ceremony.

The Chairman, Janet McBeth, detailed the activities of the school since the last meeting, including:

  • Top Oval naming ceremony (Todd Gerhardt Realty Oval)
  • NAPLAN
  • Information Sessions for next year’s parents
  • Excursions to Lone Pine, Planetarium and the Rail Museum
  • STEM activities including Kitchen Garden Club, Coding, Robotics.
  • Sports Days
  • Pop-up concerts
  • National Story Time

James Doherty and Lucy Goddard presented an outline of the programs undertaken by GSS in the areas of PE, Signature Programs and Partnerships.

Resource Centre

We encourage students to continue and increase their reading over the holidays – many are involved in working towards completion of the annual Premier’s Reading Challenge. The holidays are an excellent opportunity to add those few extra books to the list. The challenge runs until Friday 23 August which allows plenty of time for all children to read the books, submit the form and receive a certificate from the Premier.

STEM Learning

Year 2

In Year 2 science this term, students have been learning all about water. We have looked at where it comes from and goes to, how we use it and why water conservation is important. The students have come up with some great ideas to save water. Here are just a few:

“We can protect our water by not throwing rubbish on the ground or in the oceans.” Chevelle

“We can save water by having shorter showers.” Miliana

“Recycle leftover water on the garden or give it to the dog.” Samuel

Year 4

In science this week the Year 4 students started working on their new unit of work: Biology, looking at Life Cycles. They are starting with the life cycle of flowering plants and had an opportunity to see and pull apart a dissected lilly flower to identify the parts of flowers. Knowing about the anatomy of flowers will help with their understanding of pollination and the importance of flowers in plant life cycles and in food production.

Year 6

In STEM this week the Year 6 students started working on their new unit of work: Physics, looking at Energy and in particular electricity. To help their understanding of electrical circuits, they had some hands-on ‘trial and error’ time with electrical circuit components to try and make a lightbulb light up.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

Congratulations 2WC and 6R! Sustainability Steve enjoyed spending time in your classes. Keep up the great work!

Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable!

Thank you to the school community who came along and supported the Arts Show for 2019. Despite the wet weather during the day, the rain cleared and the evening was very well attended by families and community members. Dr. Suzuki said, "Only on the days that you eat!" The best plan is to make practice a part of your daily routine. If you know you will practice at a certain time every day, it will happen with very few exceptions and think of all the extra time you’ll have in the holidays!
