From the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

With only two weeks remaining in Term 2, I would like to encourage all students to continue the great work they have been doing, right until the end of Week 10. Remember to keep up your daily reading.

Students have had many opportunities to demonstrate Gumdale’s GROW values the past fortnight, including singing at the Treble Voices Festival, competing in Sport Aerobics and Interschool Sports and enjoying Under 8’s Day. Well done to each student involved!

Best of luck to the athletes representing GSS and Bayside District at the Metropolitan East carnival next week, we know you will give your best effort and display positive sportsmanship.

Finally, I would like to extend an invitation to our whole school community to join us for the Arts Show Opening Night on Wednesday 26 June. It’s sure to be a great showcase of our students’ talents.

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal
Gumdale State School

News from the Payment Desk

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place, One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your student’s account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.

Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.

Prompt payment of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you. Payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.

Paying your school invoices

All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date.

Please note that payments can be made one of four ways:

  • Online using the BPOINT Payment Gateway https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or from the invoice using the BPOINT link
  • Phone banking via BPOINT IVR (1300 631 073)
  • Using the QParents App or
  • In person at our Administration Office during office hours (8:00am-3:30pm)

Under 8’s Day

It was a beautiful day in the sunshine, full of fun and learning, all for our Under 8's. Thank you to the amazing team of teachers in P-2 who coordinated Tuesday’s event, and to all the parents who volunteered their time to assist. And a special mention to the team of first responders who visited with their emergency vehicles.

Deep thinking in our classrooms

Our students are diving to deeper levels of thinking through the exploration of our Visible Thinking Routines. This week we explored Connect, Extend, Challenge - a routine for connecting new ideas to prior knowledge. Year 4 students have used this routine to capture their thinking about the topic of ‘Life in London’ and the Year 2 students have demonstrated their deep thinking about ‘Safety Online’ and ‘Australian Money.’ This thinking routine is a fantastic way for all students to contribute their own prior knowledge/understanding and then work collaboratively to find connections between the thinking.

Collaboration with Manly State School

Last week our Year 4 teachers began our journey of collaboration with Manly State School. Staff from Gumdale and Manly met to discuss writing moderation, pedagogy and feedback. We would like to thank Manly SS for opening their doors and minds to contribute to a successful collaboration. We look forward to our next meeting and expanding the partnership to include additional year levels.

Cheeky Changes Science Show

Last Tuesday, the Year 1 students engaged in a visit from the Street Science team. Our Year 1 students were treated to a highly engaging, interactive show, based on the concept that science is everywhere around us and everyday materials can be physically changed in a variety of ways. The workshop involved the students describing and comparing physical changes and making their own PVA bouncy ball.

As you can see in the photos, the students had a ball!

Rail Museum and Ipswich Nature Reserve Excursion

Last week the Year 4 students went on an excursion to the Rail Museum. The students excitedly explained that they completed a scavenger hunt in groups, where they had to match the number and record the fact/meaning. The scavenger hunt took them around to each of the trains and artefacts at the museum. The students enjoyed investigating all of the objects from the past. At the Nature Reserve, the students saw a variety of birds and animals. (Thank you to Ruby 4C for your contributions to this excursion report)

John Briggs – National Reconciliation Week

As part of National Reconciliation week, the Gumdale SS staff invited John Briggs, an Indigenous consultant, to our weekly staff meeting to develop our cultural awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, people and communities. The focus of National Reconciliation Week this year was ‘Grounded in Truth Walk Together with Courage’ and John’s presentation challenged our thinking and prior knowledge with many truths about Indigenous culture and inclusion. Thank you to Mrs Ros McAuliffe for inviting John to share his story – what an enriching experience for all involved.

ICAS Assessments 2019

Gumdale State School is proud to partner with UNSW Global to offer its annual ICAS Assessments. We’re delighted to inform you that we will be participating in ICAS again this year, to recognise and reward students’ academic achievement. Please keep an eye on your emails for further details about how to register your child in the coming weeks.

Resource Centre

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities.

As well as being fun, the Premier's Reading Challenge aims to boost children’s literacy skills by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure and learning, to develop their imagination, and to cultivate a passion for literature. Last year, an outstanding 181,000 students from 1012 schools took part in the challenge reading a total of 2.46 million books.

Forms have been sent home to students, additional forms can be downloaded via the link below.

https://readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au/register/Documents/individual-reader-record-form.pdf?fbclid=IwAR1IAX6JM9qfejhL3CNKTi4ocn8ar308fP027NcMybwtNG0wRINo3G_iWzY

Completed forms can be returned to the Resource Centre by the end of the challenge, no later than Friday 23 August.

Scholastic Book Fair

This year our Scholastic Book Fair will be held in Term 3 on 28, 29 and 30 August. We are looking forward to another successful event... it should be Dino-mite!

Student Council

Student Council is fundraising with Entertainment Book! 2019/2020 Entertainment Books in digital format or hardcopy are now available. Vouchers are valid to 1 June, 2020.

The subscription contains hundreds of great value offers, ready for your enjoyment, while also helping the Student Council's fundraising efforts!

Kitchen Garden

Thank you to the following supporters of our kitchen garden:

  • Mena from the ROGI Gardening Group, for her kind donation of an electric wok/fry pan and a juicer.
  • Kathy Clout from Wallum Nursery, for donating compost.
  • Mr Hammond and Brisbane Bayside State College, who have collected our donated pallets and are designing an effective system to pull them apart and create something new for us!

A big thank you also to the many families who have donated seeds over the past few weeks.

Club members have been very busy with many activities.

Growing things:

  • The pumpkin growing competition teams have planted their seeds and are looking after their seedlings.
  • Planting carrot seedlings.
  • Garden maintenance.

Tasting things made with our crops:

  • Green salsa.
  • Squash bake.
  • Mulberries.

Making things:

  • Herbal salt.
  • Garden bliss balls. Here’s how to make your own at home:
    - In a bucket mix 2 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of compost and 1 cup of water.
    - Add about 2 tablespoons of seeds of your choice (flowers, herbs or veggies will all work).
    - Knead with your hands until it feels like playdough.
    - Roll walnut size balls and set on a tray to dry.
    - Throw them into a wild area in your garden and watch for the plants to grow.

Donations of plants, seedlings, seeds mulch or soil for the garden are appreciated and can be dropped to the STEAM Centre.

Music Practise Tips – Where?

It’s always best to have a special practice place carved out somewhere in your home that everyone knows about. This will help keep you consistent with your practicing, and it will also help other family members respect your practice time. Choose a semi-quiet area with a chair and a sturdy music stand. There should be proper lighting and a place to store your musical accessories such as sheet music, pencils, markers, notebook and a metronome (specific instruments will require a drawer or cupboard for other things such as extra strings, reeds, valve oil, etc.). There should be minimal distractions such as TV, radio, other children, pets or telephone.
