From the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

I would like to commend students on the excellent start to Term 2. As I said at this week’s full school assembly, students should be especially proud of the way they conducted themselves at our ANZAC Day Ceremony. Several of our special guests at the service mentioned to me how impressed they were with our students’ behaviour and their appearance in formal uniform. Well done students!

As we continue with the term, I encourage each individual to lift their effort and always give their best in all situations.

A reminder regarding parking in and around Gumdale School. We have a number of disabled carparks which are allocated for those families who require them. Please be respectful by not parking in these carparks if you do not have approval to do so. In addition, please be considerate of our community neighbours when dropping off and picking up students. Car parking is available in the council’s Tilley Road carpark, along Formosa Rd, Tilley Rd, New Cleveland Rd and Dianthus Street. A reminder that Eastside Village, our local kindies and Australia Post are not parent carparks.

This week some very talented staff members brought their best creations, both sweet and savoury, for the Great Gumdale Bake Off. Mrs Cusack's Paleo slice took out the top prize and a fantastic $305.65 was raised for Kids Helpline. Thanks to all staff members for your delicious contributions.

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal
Gumdale State School

News from the Payment Desk

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place, One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your student’s account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.

Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.

Prompt payment of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you. Payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.

Paying your school invoices

All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date.

Please note that payments can be made one of four ways:

  1. Online using the BPOINT Payment Gateway https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or from the invoice using the BPOINT link
  2. Phone banking via BPOINT IVR (1300 631 073)
  3. Online using the QParent App or
  4. In person at our Administration Office during office hours (8:00am-3:30pm)

Welcome Back!

We hope that all of our families had a wonderful Easter break and that you had plenty of opportunities to relax, spend quality time with family and indulge in eating some chocolate or hot cross buns. We have been extremely pleased with the way that the students have settled back into the school routine this term and we look forward to reflecting on their growth as the term progresses.

Mornings in the Hall

As well as our Let’s Dance program in the mornings, we will now also be utilising a program called Smiling Mind. Smiling Mind is a web or app-based program that teaches the skills of mindfulness to students, educators and adults.

Mindfulness is a skill that can build the foundations for optional student concentration and attention. A regular mindfulness practice can have positive benefits on both students and educator engagement.

For students, it develops:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Emotional Management
  • Attention and Concentration
  • Decision Making Skills

Our mindfulness practice runs for approximately 6 minutes and focusses on breathing, concentration and self-awareness.

ANZAC Assembly

We were extremely proud of the way that our students conducted themselves during the Anzac Assembly last week. All students showed their respect for the men and women who served in battle for our country. We would like to acknowledge the incredible work that Ms Daphne Gillies and the student leadership team put into this event. It provided our students, staff and school community with the opportunity to commemorate such a significant occasion in a reflective and respectful manner.

Year 2 Narrative Writing

Students in 2DS recently created individualised stories for a Prep student. After interviewing their Prep buddies and reading with them, the year 2 students got to work on their narratives. Using the information gained from their Prep Buddies and their knowledge of narratives, they wrote stories which included characters, adjectives, a setting, and an interesting ending.

Once the writing was complete, 2DS students proudly presented and read the narratives they had made for their buddies. The Prep students’ eyes lit up when they heard their name in their individualised narrative and each Prep student received a laminated copy of their story to take home to share with their families. 2DS thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to read and write with purpose, while also creating a gift for someone.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

The Organic waste collected from our eating areas is providing our gardens with nutrient rich worm tea and compost. This would not be possible without our amazing class volunteers that look after collecting, emptying and cleaning the Organics bins daily. A big thank you to 1WL, 1N, 2R, 2WC, 5R and 6R for continuing this amazing work in term 2. We are seeking two classes to look after the Year 3 and Year 4 eating areas. If you would like your class to take on this important role please see your classroom teacher or Mrs Sheppard.

Digital Tech News

This term Year 2’s have been exploring the app ‘Seesaw’. This app is a learning portfolio where students submit their work via the app. The class teacher can give feedback on submitted work and other students in the class can like and comment on work as well.

As part of our Information Report English unit, students read a text on Mallard Ducks. They then found an online picture of the Mallard Duck and wrote three new facts they learnt by reading the information report. This activity helped students to engage with the text more and reflect upon their learning.

In Maths, students submitted their work on 3D shapes. They had to show how many edges, corners and faces the selected shapes have and then create the shapes using play doh.

Furthermore, Year 2 students did some app smashing. They made 2D shapes in the app ‘Geoboard’. They then took a screen shot of their page of shapes and put this photo in Book Creator.

Thank you Year 2 for sharing your work!
