From the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

Term 1 has come to an end, and what a busy time it has been. Congratulations students and staff on a productive and fruitful 10 weeks in the classroom. I am very proud of our students, who have consistently represented Gumdale State School well while attending various excursions in and around the city. Well done students.

Last week’s Sailing Regatta at RQYS was a great culmination of the Year 6 cohort’s sailing experience. Students showed great determination, resilience and skill on the water. Thank you to Yachtshare for hosting our parents and guests onboard their vessels and to the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for your support of this event. I would also like to mention the complimentary social membership offer from RQYS that was emailed to Gumdale families last week; I’m sure many of you will be taking up this generous offer.

This week we honoured two valued staff members who have recently celebrated milestone birthdays. Congratulations to Jeff Stonehouse (Grounds Officer) and Nevia Deklic (Cleaner). We appreciate all you do for our Gumdale community.

I would like to wish all students, families and staff a safe and restful holiday break. Don’t forget to keep up your reading at home and we look forward to seeing you in term 2.

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

ANZAC Day March - Manly

On Thursday 25 April (ANZAC Day), all students have been invited to represent Gumdale State School at the Manly/Lota RSL Sub branch Anzac Day ceremony.

The march will commence at Manly State School at 8:00am sharp and finish with a memorial service in Richard Russell Park at approximately 9:00am. The school captains will be laying a wreath on behalf of our school to honour our servicemen and women, past and present.

Please note the following:

  • The march starts from the front of Manly State School on Ernest Street in Manly at 8:00am sharp. Please arrive no later than 7:45am and remember parking spaces may be hard to find.
  • Upon arrival, please go to the march starting area and look for Mr Savill.
  • The march route will begin at the front of Manly State School, turn right into Mount Joy Tce, turn right into Yamboyna Street, turn left into Ferguson Street and conclude at Richard Russell Park near the corner of Cambridge Parade and Melville Tce.
  • The service should last about an hour. Once everyone is settled in around the memorial, the service will begin with the inclusion of two national anthems (NZ and Australia), hymns, speeches and wreath laying.
  • As this is a school occasion, formal school uniforms, including hats must be worn.

Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you on ANZAC day, 25 April, at the march.

Easter Road Safety – A message from QLD Police

Queensland Police have asked our assistance in communicating their road safety message within our school community. The Easter Road Safety Campaign, which is being conducted between 5 April and 26 April, is a coordinated state-wide policing activity designed to improve road safety and reduce the number of fatal traffic crashes for the Easter and associated back to school period.

During this period, a multi-faceted strategy will be employed which will include high visibility policing on major roadways and enforcement of the Fatal Five factors: speed, drink/drug driving, seat belts, fatigue and distraction.

Unfortunately, police are still attending devastating road crash fatalities and serious traffic crashes whereby poor driver behaviour has been the primary contributing factor to the crash. The effects on loved ones, friends, the greater community and our local police and other emergency services is devastating and far reaching.

Please, let’s all drive safely and to the conditions of the road.

News from the Payment Desk

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place, One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your student’s account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.

Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.

Prompt payment of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you. Payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.

Paying your school invoices

All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date.

Please note that payments can be made one of four ways:

  1. Online using the BPOINT Payment Gateway https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or from the invoice using the BPOINT link
  2. Phone banking via BPOINT IVR (1300 631 073)
  3. Online using the QParent App or
  4. In person at our Administration Office during office hours (8:00am-3:30pm)

Congratulations to everyone in our Gumdale Community for a wonderful term full of lots of learning and growing.

Our visits to classrooms are always the highlight of our day and we are so proud of the gains our students are making in all areas of the curriculum.

Our teachers have done a wonderful job of ensuring that they have provided all students with great opportunities to engage with their learning and produce work of a high standard.

The high number of parents who attended our parent teacher evenings confirm for us that we are all working together to give our students a great education here at Gumdale State School. We value your ongoing support.

We hope you all have a safe and restful break and are able to spend some special time with family and friends. Happy holidays!

STEM Learning

World Science Festival Brisbane

Our year 5 and 6 students displayed amazing GROW behaviours when they visited QLD Museum and QPAC to participate in WSFB activities. The Year 5’s enjoyed front row seats at a Q&A session with Dr Karl and the year 6’s had an opportunity to listen to four industry leading STEM professionals. A number of students also had an opportunity to visit the Turtle Hatchery experience!

FUTUREBNE Sustainable City Challenge

At Brisbane City Council’s annual Green Heart Schools FUTUREBNE Sustainable City Challenge, students were given the role of the 2100 Future BNE response team. The team has been engaged with endless budget and resourcing to address the challenges of Brisbane’s future as a sustainable city. Teams critically evaluated local and global challenges faced by cities and battled other school teams as they discovered how science, technology and innovative design can work to build a better future.

The task was two-fold.

  • Critically analyse what contributes to creating a sustainable city from a global and local perspective.
  • Design innovative, creative and radical solutions to make Brisbane the cleanest, greenest, most sustainable city in Australia.

Team solutions will be promoted to showcase and celebrate our future leaders and their creativity, to ensure future Brisbane will be a prepared, resilient, adaptable and sustainable city.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

Last week our Prep students participated in a Sustainability Workshop.

They sorted lunch waste into Organics, Recycling and Landfill bins and enjoyed a tour of our bathtub worm farm, Australian native stingless beehive, Garden Tower, Bush tukka garden and Library garden. We were very impressed with their knowledge and understanding of where our waste goes!

Waste tip – We are noticing a lot of whole foods in the bin and are requesting students to take home the whole foods that they can’t or don’t want to eat. Hundreds of dollars worth of perfectly good food is going into lunch bins each day.

Unprocessed fruit and vegetable scraps only

Yellow Bins

Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable!

Kitchen Garden Club

The recent rain was great for our kitchen garden and less watering duties for our club members meant more time for other fun activities.

In addition to planting more seedlings, Prep/Year 1 gardening club members have been creating their own delicious and refreshing iced teas using herbs from our kitchen garden. Club members were also busy making their own mini greenhouses with cress, chia and mustard seeds.

Year 2-6 club members have gone through a thorough troubleshooting analysis of our composting bins and worm farms. Club members learned how to improve conditions for both composting bins and worm farms and have come up with an improvement and maintenance plan which they have already started to put into action.

Again, our thanks go to Kathy Clout from Wallum Nursery who donated many seedlings for our club members to plant.

Donations of plants, seedlings, seeds, mulch or soil for the garden are appreciated and can be dropped to the STEAM Centre.

Thank you to all our parent/carer, student and teacher volunteers. New members are always welcome.

Messages from the Team

Time flies when you are having fun!

We cannot believe that term 1 is almost over. Our bodies are filling up with excitement for Vacation Care. We would like to send out a friendly reminder that all Vacation Care forms are due back ASAP, as spaces are limited.

With great sadness we have to announce that our beloved staff member Chez, is leaving us at Gumdale to move to a new centre. Chez has been a valued member at Gumdale for 18 months and is moving to our sister service at Seven Hills. We wish Chez all the best for her future endeavours.

On a more positive note, we would like to welcome our new Assistant educator, Bailey to our service. Bailey is a first year Secondary Education student who is enthusiastic to put his theoretical skills learned at University into practise. Bailey is a hardworking and reliable staff member, and we are thrilled to have him on our team.

What we’ve been doing…

The Preps

Over the last fortnight, our Prep students have been exploring the living world around them in various play-based learning experiences. These learning episodes implemented within Before and After school care, have seen our students develop their own understanding around Aboriginal Dream Time, living things and our environment.

The last fortnight saw the year 1 and 2 students head over heels for industrial design. We saw our students create and construct multilevel magnetic towers, innovative car designs and Lego forts. We love seeing the students work together in teams to create their own creative masterpieces.

Grades 3+

Term 1 of 2019 has welcomed back Cricket and Soccer seasons to Before and After school care. This last fortnight we have re-introduced the YMCA Soccer agreement. This agreement guarantees that all student understand the rules and expectations before the commencement of the game. This contract was introduced to insure that all students remain safe throughout the match.

What we are looking forward to…

As term 1 of 2019 closes, we look forward to the exciting excursions and incursions being held at YMCA over the Easter break. If you are not attending our Autumn Vacation Care, we wish you a safe and relaxing Holiday.
