From the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

With just two weeks remaining in Term 1, I would like to congratulate students on their excellent behaviour and effort at school. During my visits to classrooms I have been impressed with the progress students are making in their reading. We will remain focused until the last day of term on our academic priorities: reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy. Teachers are reiterating this message in the classroom and as always, we expect students to attend school and give their best every day.

It was pleasing to hear that our Parent Teacher Interviews were so well attended this week. Thank you for making your children’s education a high priority and for working with us to see positive outcomes for each student.

Last week was Admin Appreciation Day; I would like to thank the administration staff of our school who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep Gumdale State School running efficiently.

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

Reminders from the School

Parking In and Around Gumdale State School

The Tilley Road Stop/Drop/Go is fully supervised until 3:30pm each day, so to avoid traffic congestion please consider delaying your afternoon arrival. Additional car parking is available along Formosa Road, Tilley Road, New Cleveland Road and Dianthus Street.

Please remember that the carparks at Eastside Village, our local kindies and Australia Post are not parent carparks. We ask again that parents be considerate of our community neighbours when dropping off and picking up students around Gumdale State School.

Reporting Student Absences

24/7 Student Absence Line
3902 8399

All children must be present in their classroom for roll marking at 8:50am. Teachers will mark the roll and close it. Any child not in the classroom will be marked as absent. Children who arrive after the roll has closed will be required to go to the office to collect a LATE SLIP for presentation to their teacher.

Office staff will check and clear the Absence Line before 9:45am and a DAILY UNEXPLAINED ABSENCE report will be run. A generic SMS message will be sent to parents advising of their child’s absence and requesting an explanation.

Phone the Student Absence Line before 9:30am to inform of any/all occasions your child will be away from school. This is a 24hr recorded service, you can call it anytime. The Student Absence Line number is 3902 8399; we suggest you store this number in your phone. Alternatively you can email absence details to admin@gumdaless.eq.edu.au or registered parents can utilise the QParents App. If you receive an SMS message, call the Student Absence Line to explain the absence OR if you believe your child should be at school contact the school office immediately to notify us.

Early Departures

From time to time, you may need to collect your child early from school. This may be in the case of illness, attending an appointment or family emergency. In all cases students must be signed out through the administration office.

Once you have signed your child out, administration staff will issue you with an early departure slip. This must be presented to the classroom teacher before your child can be released into your care (or that of the collecting adult).

Legally the school can only release your child into the care of an adult who is listed on the student’s personal details record as a guardian or emergency contact. Administration staff are able to check these details and verify the identity of the person collecting the child. In the event that a person comes to collect your child and their details are not recorded, administration staff will contact you to seek your instruction.

News from the Payment Desk

Statements

Statements will be issued to all school families this week. If you receive a statement with a negative amount this means you have a credit on your account and it can be applied to a future excursion throughout the year.

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place, One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your student’s account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.

Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.

Prompt payment of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you. Payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.

Paying your school invoices

All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date.

Please note that payments can be made one of four ways:

  • Online using the BPOINT Payment Gateway https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or from the invoice using the BPOINT link
  • Phone banking via BPOINT IVR (1300 631 073)
  • Online using the QParent App or
  • In person at our Administration Office during office hours (8:00am-3:30pm)

Parent Teacher Interviews

It was wonderful to see so many parents on Wednesday evening at our parent teacher interviews. The interviews provide an opportunity for staff and parents to share how students are progressing in academic, social and emotional spheres. It is also a time to plan forward for the next steps in children’s learning this year. Parents of students in Year 5 and 6S are invited to book a Student-Led Conference for Tuesday 2 April. Emails have been sent with a booking link.

Teacher Planning

All teachers will be released from class to work in year level teams for a half day of planning next week. During this time teachers will focus on refining the current HASS units of work including the embedding of critical and creative thinking skills. As part of the refinement process, teachers will focus on reviewing our current units and assessment tasks to ensure that thinking and engagement is maximised.

Bullying No Way!

The school was brighter with splashes of orange last Friday as we celebrated national ‘Bullying No Way!’ day at Gumdale State School. Teachers and students spent time during the day discussing friendship skills and strategies to promote positive relationships.

Harmony Day

On Friday 5 April, children in Prep and Grade 1 will be celebrating diversity at our 2019 Gumdale Harmony Day!

It would be wonderful if you could make a contribution to our Harmony Day in one or more of the following ways:

  • Donate some clothing from another country for the day for children to dress up in. Clothes will need to be labelled clearly with your child’s name.
  • Donate some non-breakable cultural artefacts for children to look at on the day. These will be displayed in the hall.
  • Record your child saying ‘hello’ or another message in a different language. Send the video to kdohe32@eq.edu.au.

If you have an item to contribute, please contact Kristin Doherty at kdohe32@eq.edu.au.

We’re very much looking forward to celebrating diversity at Gumdale on the last day of term.

Prep & Year 1 Social Lunch

Parents and Carers of students in Prep and Year 1 are invited to a Social Lunch on Friday 29 March at Fielders (Wynnum Manly Workers Club). Please click here for details and to R.S.V.P. by Thursday 28 March.

Health and Wellbeing

Anxiety

The start of a new school year can often bring worry and anxiety. This is a normal part of the process of settling into a new class and routine after a long holiday. However, it is not normal if it begins to affect a child’s school attendance and their ability to participate in things other children their age are doing. Below are a few links to resources that can help you and your child cope with anxiety.

Bullying. No Way!

Last Friday was The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. It’s a day where we take a stand and say ‘Bullying. No Way!’

Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:

  • mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)
  • not liking someone or a single act of social rejection
  • one-off acts of meanness or spite
  • isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

(These behaviours still need to be addressed and resolved.)

At Gumdale State School, we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone and have a zero tolerance policy on bullying.

Parents and carers are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

  1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
  2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
  3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
  4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.
  5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.
  6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents:

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/Resources/FactSheets/Pages/For-parents-and-carers.aspx

Thanks for your support to make Gumdale State School a great school for everyone.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

Our Sustainability Ranger classes are doing a great job with our worms having lots of lovely scraps and our bins being maintained well!

Thank you 6R, 5G, 4S, 2R, 2WC, 1WL and 1N!

6R and 2R were awarded Sustainability Steve and had him spend a week in their classrooms!

Sustainability Ranger responsibilities are:

  1. Collect the Organics bin from outside the STEM room in the morning and place next to Recycling and Rubbish bins in their eating area.
  2. After second play (1:45-2:00pm) bring their Organics bin to STEM room and after checking and removing incorrect waste place contents into large Organics bin.
  3. Rinse Organics bin and leave upside down on outside sink to dry.
  4. Wash hands with soap in STEM room.

Waste tip – We are noticing a lot of whole foods in the bin and are requesting students to take home the whole foods that they can’t or don’t want to eat. Hundreds of dollars’ worth of perfectly good food is going into lunch bins each day.

Kitchen Garden Club

Look at what’s growing!

Both Prep/Year 1 and Year 2-6 Kitchen Garden Clubs are well under way.

Year 2-6 club members have been busy setting up the bathtub worm farm and planting tomatoes, beans, squash, beetroot and other veggies from seedlings as well as seeds. We have also been busy maintaining the garden beds which, due to the heat, included a lot of watering of the plants.

The Prep/Year 1 gardening Club members have had a great start, too, and learned about the responsible use of gardening equipment while also obtaining their tool licenses. Club members started looking after the Prep garden where we have been planting various edible native bush tucker plants, such as warrigal greens, midyim berries, blue tongue and sea purslane. We have also been planting various veggie and herb seedlings in our new tower garden.

Donations of plants, seedlings, seeds mulch or soil for the garden are appreciated and can be dropped to the STEAM Centre.

Thank you to all our parent/carer, student and teacher volunteers.
New members are always welcome.

Digital Tech News

In 5M, students have created a visual thinking journal in the app Book Creator called ‘See, Think, Wonder’. In this journal, they are given interesting pictures to contemplate and analyse. This is a great activity that encourages students to make careful observations and thoughtful interpretations. It helps stimulate curiosity and set the stage for inquiry. Sophie from 5M has shared her work below:

In 2WC, students have been doing a narrative unit around the theme of ‘Dragons’. This week they used the Augmented Reality app Imagipets to create a dragon character for their six-sentence story. Augmented reality in simple terms is augmenting what you see in the real world with additional information presented digitally. It provides a new method of innovative and immersive learning through visualisation and interaction.

Messages from the Team

We hope everyone has had a soothing break over the rainy weekend and are in good health for the next schooling fortnight.

YMCA has implemented numerous new programs beginning this term. Emails have been sent out regarding the details of these programs. Sadly, spots are limited in all additional programs so if you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate in contacting us!

On another note, Autumn Vacation Care Flyers are currently available. If you are chasing a form, you can either flick us an email and we can forward an electrical copy or alternatively you can pop into the centre to grab a hard copy from us. Forms are needing to be returned ASAP.

What we’ve been doing…

The last fortnight has been a great time for students and staff as we have been implementing various new games and activities to widen the interest of students during their time at the YMCA.

Preps

Preps have been working on developing both their gross and fine motor skills through various programed activities, which have been run within both Before and After School Care. These skills are being taught through fun and interactive craft and sporting activities.

Grade 1 & 2

During Before and After School Care both the Grade 1’s and 2’s have been working on their etiquette and manners. YMCA praises our student on using these positive social skills in everyday situations.

Grades 3+

During Space and Hygiene week, the students in years 3-6 were encouraged to join the younger grade within group time to assist the educators in teaching the students new games and skills. The younger students really appreciated the guidance and support that they received regarding these topics from the older children.

What we are looking forward to…

  • Receiving filled in Vacation Care Flyers (Due ASAP)
  • Study Group – Every Monday and Wednesday Afternoon 3:30-4:30pm
  • Art Class – Every Tuesday and Friday Afternoon 3:30 -5:00pm
  • Introducing our new staff member Bailey (He is beginning this week)
