Gumdale State School
Principal
Phil Savill
Welcome to Week 4 at Gumdale. We are well into the routine of Term 1 and during my class visits, I have been impressed with the work students are producing. Let’s continue this strong momentum for the remainder of the term.
It was my pleasure to present badges to our 2019 school leaders and student councillors at the Leadership Induction Ceremony last week. I remind students who hold these positions of the opportunity they have to serve their fellow students and inspire them to always do their best. Each one has a role to play in helping maintain the high standard that Gumdale is known for.
Thank you to parents and carers for attending Meet the Teacher Evening last week; partnering with us in this way demonstrates to your children that their education is a high priority. Working together will enable our students to do so much more. Thank you to our teaching staff for hosting the sessions and for your ongoing dedication to our students.
At Gumdale State School, the safety of all students is a priority. Please take note of the important reminders below concerning student attendance and early departures. Transportation is another safety issue we take seriously. Recently school admin has received reports of children walking through staff carparks; I urge all parents to use the designated areas in the Tilley Rd carpark and on Formosa Road during drop off/pick up times. Please be attentive to all road rules and parking laws around school.
Next week, students will be running in our Cross Country event. A reminder that Cross Country day is a compulsory school day and all students are expected to attend and participate. More information about nominations has been emailed home to senior students. We look forward to a great day.
Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

Reminders from the School
Student Attendance
All children MUST be present in their classroom for roll marking at 8:50am. Teachers will mark the roll and close it. Any child not in the classroom will be marked as absent. Children who arrive after the roll has closed will be required to go to the office to collect a LATE SLIP for presentation to their teacher.
Office staff will check and clear the Absence Line before 9:45am and a DAILY UNEXPLAINED ABSENCE report will be run. A generic SMS message will be sent to parents advising of their child’s absence and requesting an explanation.
Phone the Student Absence Line before 9:30am to inform of any/all occasions your child will be away from school. This is a 24hr recorded service, you can call it anytime. The STUDENT ABSENCE LINE number is 3902 8399; we suggest you store this number in your phone. Alternatively you can email absence details to admin@gumdaless.eq.edu.au or registered parents can utilise the QParents App. If you receive an SMS message, call the Student Absence Line to explain the absence OR if you believe your child should be at school contact the school office immediately to notify us.
Early Departures
From time to time, you may need to collect your child early from school. This may be in the case of illness, attending an appointment or family emergency. In all cases students must be signed out through the administration office.
Once you have signed your child out, administration staff will issue you with an early departure slip. This must be presented to the classroom teacher before your child can be released into your care (or that of the collecting adult).
Legally the school can only release your child into the care of an adult who is listed on the student’s personal details record as a guardian or emergency contact. Administration staff are able to check these details and verify the identity of the person collecting the child. In the event that a person comes to collect your child and their details are not recorded, administration staff will contact you to seek your instruction.
Student Contact Details
In the interests of smooth communication between the school and families, please take a moment to complete and return the Request to Amend Student Details form if any of your details have changed recently. This includes changes to:
- Parents' phone numbers
- Parents' email addresses
- Home addresses
- Emergency contacts and phone numbers
- Court orders/Parenting agreements
Paper copies are available at school administration.
In addition, the Gumdale State School Parent Handbook can be downloaded below. Please take the time to look through this resource; it contains a wealth of information about the school that is valuable to both new and returning families.
Parking in and Around Gumdale State School

Please be considerate of our community neighbours when dropping off and picking up students around Gumdale State School. A reminder from Brisbane City Council that parking laws, road rules and street and carpark signs need to be adhered to at all times.
Please use the school car park and drop off/pickup zone when transporting students. Car parking is also available along Formosa Road, Tilley Road, New Cleveland Road and Dianthus Street.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent teacher interviews will be held on Wednesday 20 March in Hollis Hall from 3:15pm. These interviews provide the opportunity for parents to discuss their child’s academic, social and emotional progress. Further information and access to the online booking system will be sent out closer to the date. A number of teachers will be trialling student-led conferences in place of traditional interviews. Individual teachers conducting student-led conferences will contact parents directly regarding any adjustments to dates and times for these meetings.
Class Teachers – First Point of Contact
Building partnerships with your child’s teacher will assist in your child achieving their potential. Research shows that children learn best when the significant adults in their lives - parents, teachers, and other family and community members - work together to encourage and support them.
Classroom teachers have shared information with you regarding the curriculum and routines for the class. This provides you with an understanding of how your child’s classroom will operate, the teacher’s expectations for learning and behaviour and the year level curriculum that will be covered this year.
If you have any concerns or questions related to any aspect of your child’s academic process, class routine, behaviour, social interactions or the school wide expectations we encourage you to refer your initial queries to your child’s class teacher. They will have the closest working relationship with your child, will know more about their capabilities and friendship groups and will often be the best initial source of information to address your questions or concerns. If an issue or query continues to be unresolved, please feel free to make an appointment with the sector Deputy Principal to discuss the matter further.
National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year, in the second full week in May.
Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that NAPLAN will move online over a two-three year period. This means moving NAPLAN from the current paper-based tests to computer-based assessments commencing from 2018 onwards. A parent information session is being held in the Resource Centre on Wednesday 6 March from 6pm for interested parents as we transition to this new delivery mode. Further information on NAPLAN on-line for parents/caregivers can be accessed at the ACARA website:
http://www.nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-document-library/naplan-online-information-brochure-for-parents-and-carers.pdf?sfvrsn=4
Religious Instruction
Religious Instruction will begin next week for our year one to six classes.
Gumdale has a co-operative arrangement around the delivery of religious instruction, where more than one faith group provide the instruction. The instructors are accredited representatives from their respective churches and have participated in faith-based religious instructor training.
If you do not want your child to participate in religious instruction, please contact the school and let us know.
Prep – Year 1 News
It is wonderful to go into rooms and see our students actively engaged in their learning. Reading groups have started and students across the early years are producing some great writing.
We had our first P-2 Assembly this week and all our students did a wonderful job of sitting quietly and listening. Our Preps in particular behaved beautifully and quickly picked up the Gumdale way around the assembly routine.
A highlight of this assembly is always the handing out of awards. The pride and joy that we see in the faces of our little ones as they come out to collect their award is priceless and reminds us that we are so lucky to be working with our students here at Gumdale.

Year 2-3 News
As we have now settled in to the school year, I have commenced my weekly classroom visits to the year three classrooms and assisting with reading groups in year two. At the end of last week, I spent some time reflecting on just how blessed I am to work with such inspirational students. How lucky am I to have dedicated time to sit and listen to students in year three share their goals and reflect on their learning. For many of the year three students, they have recently received the ‘guide to making judgements’ for their upcoming English assessment task detailing what is required for an A to D grade. When sitting with the students, I asked them which grade they were hoping to achieve and what they needed to do to achieve this. I was absolutely blown away with how dedicated our students are to achieving success at a very high level and how articulately they explained the elements they needed to include to do so. I look forward to celebrating their success and I’m sure you are too.
Reading groups have well and truly started in year two and I am extremely grateful that I get to work with a small group of students during these sessions. Each and every student enthusiastically engages in these activities with a core focus on Reading. When asked, all of the students I have worked with readily tell me how they practise their reading at home and work on the reading goals their teachers have suggested.

Parent information night
I have received positive feedback from both teachers and parents regarding the content of the recent parent information night. It is great to see everyone coming together to work collaboratively with the students’ best interests in the forefront of their thinking and decisions. I would personally like to thank the teachers for their dedication, time and for sharing their knowledge of teaching and learning with the parents. I would also like to thank you, our Gumdale parents, for your support and collaboration.
Student Council Badge Ceremony
Congratulations to all our elected class representatives who were presented with their Student Council badges on Monday last week: 3D Ruby C, 3I Sienna W, 3M Jayda G, 3F Sophie N, 3R Lilly V, 3W Scarlett H, 4S James C, 4D Remy R, 4M Olivia W, 4MW Alexander F, 4C Maybelle D, 5G Saebra B, 5L Katie M, 5M Sophie M, 5R Josephine C, 6H Sofia R, 6R Cassian D, 6M Dylan S and 6S Tania P.
We are confident that these students will work with their peers and the school leaders to make 2019 a year to remember at Gumdale State School. We look forward to supporting their first fundraiser ‘Silly Sock Day’ on Friday 22 February, raising money for the towns impacted by the Queensland floods.

Mornings in the Hall
Our school hall is fully supervised in the mornings from 8:15am, while our technology student leaders facilitate the music for our ‘Let’s Dance’ program. Students in the hall who are not dancing are asked to sit and talk quietly with their friends in the blue space around the outside. Due to the hall being fully supervised by staff, this means that parents are able to drop their children off. Please be mindful of keeping all doorways clear for our students. If you are staying to dance with your child, please say your goodbyes during the last song which enables the staff to settle the students ready for the arrival of their teachers.

Goal Setting
Over the next few weeks teachers will conference with students to set individual reading and writing goals for this term. Using formative reading assessment and pre-writing tasks, teachers will work with students to determine individual learning goals. Individual learning goals focus students in knowing how they are doing, where they are going and what they need to do to get there. Goal setting is one strategy that teachers and students successfully use that contributes to enhanced student achievement. Individual student goals are reported on at the end of each semester.
Author Visit
On Wednesday, the Year 5 teachers and students welcomed Ms. Samantha Wheeler to Gumdale State School. An accomplished children’s author, Ms. Wheeler has previously worked with students to inspire, plan, write and publish their own unique stories. A local to the area, Ms. Wheeler spent time with each class discussing the use of feedback to improve their narrative writing. Professional Development was also offered to teachers by Ms. Wheeler, with a focus on teaching strategies to develop student writing in the classroom. Thank you to the Year 5 teachers for organising and supporting this valuable learning experience for the students. We look forward to reading some student writing in future newsletters.

Flexible Learning Environments
Students and teachers in Years 4 and 6 were excited upon returning to school this year to see the new outdoor flexible learning environments created over the holiday break. These two architect designed spaces maximise the use of the verandah area allowing for individual, small group or whole class learning. Located at the top of ‘G’ and ‘H’ blocks, students have already enjoyed using the flexible seating and learning spaces for reading groups, drama rehearsals and group discussions.
Flexible learning environments can provide students with a choice in deciding what kind of learning space works best for them. Engagement in learning is also fostered as the space can encourage them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical and creative thinking.

Social-Emotional Wellbeing
Manners Monday
This week we introduced ‘Manners Monday’. The idea of this is to spend some time at the beginning of the week explicitly teaching and highlighting manners with our students to set them up for the week ahead. Along with explicit teaching and discussions in class, some of our student councillors and year 6 students will present at assemblies. Below is a list of some of the examples we will be using as ways we show manners. This week’s focus was greeting people by name as you walk past them.

Digital Tech News
This week, iPad classes have commenced using Mathletics, Spelling City, Typing Tournament, EQ Library and Soundwaves. However there are still a few families who have not returned their iPad Participation, Third Party Agreement and Digital Levy forms. Your child’s class teacher will be in touch if these forms are still outstanding. Please be advised that your child will not receive access to the subscriptions mentioned above until all forms have been returned and payment received.
This week, Year 2 students have been learning about counting patterns and how to partition numbers. These Maths lesson worked well with the app Number Pieces where they have MAB’s that they use to represent different numbers. Our clever Year 2 students then took a picture of their work in the app Number Pieces and used their pictures to create number posters in the app Pic Collage. Some student work samples are below. Amazing work, Year 2!

My favourite style of music is jazz and I am a huge lover of dogs: especially of the poodle variety.
Piano Tuition
We are privileged to offer piano lessons for the first time this year with Fotini Panagopoulos in the instrumental room in the STEAM block. Second round offers have now been emailed out and if you have any further queries relating to piano tuition please contact Fotini at enjoypiano123@gmail.com

P&C News
On Tuesday 12 February over 47 parents and citizens of Gumdale State School attended the P&C's Annual General Meeting, followed by the February General Meeting. It was a great chance to reflect on the successes of 2018 including: the provision of funds for completion of air-conditioning to all classrooms, record-breaking fundraising efforts from numerous events (over $114k total), considerable operational and menu improvements in the Tuckshop and a drastic reduction of the inherited overstock in the Uniform Shop. Of course a massive thank you goes to our amazing outgoing executives Renae Northcott, Rachael Franklin and Bridget Kinch, whose strong management, dedication and sacrifice have made these successes a reality.
Elections for 2019 executive positions were held and all positions were filled unopposed. Congratulations to the 2019 team joining me as I continue my role as President; Vice President Aaron Beake, Treasurer Sanjani Prakash and Co-Secretaries Clare Hampel and Rianna Ferreira.

With the hot weather of the past fortnight, we have been serving lots of frozen treats! A reminder that all treats can be ordered on Flexischools. Students in Year 1-6 can purchase treats over the counter (cash only).

This year our menu has more delicious dishes, homemade with plenty of fresh ingredients. Check out the new meatball sub, mexican beef for our nachos, delicious new beef patties, scrumptious gluten-free banana and coconut loaf and the moist gluten-free chocolate slice. Helen will keep you informed by posting these on the P&C Facebook page.
Last year we had many kind and helpful people lending a hand at the Eatery and this year we are calling out again for more volunteers. We had so much fun with you all and would love to see new faces and the regular volunteers. The men helped us out last year too and this is fantastic so any dads or granddads that have an hour to spare we will welcome you with open arms. The online SignUp for Term 1 is also available on the following link.

Fundraising
During the P&C AGM held last week, Mr Phil Savill reflected on the success of the P&C and all those involved in fundraising. These fundraising efforts have enabled the P&C to make contributions such as the completion of air-conditioning the school two years ahead of schedule, contributing towards new readers and sporting equipment for the school. Again, the P&C would like to thank everyone that gave so generously of their time to make this happen.
The Easter Raffle
The first fundraising effort is the Easter Raffle. By this time your child should have brought home their ticket books. Please return the sold ticket books and money in the envelope supplied by 22 March. There will be a prize for the child that sells the most ticket books and a prize for the class that collectively sells the most.
Prizes will be drawn on Sunday 29 March and delivered to the winning student’s classroom on Monday 1 April.
We are asking for donations of Easter eggs, chocolates and baskets to be dropped at the school office. These donations will be made into Easter basket prizes. Please deliver your donations by 22 March.
Volunteering at Gumdale State School
The P&C rely on volunteers to make each event a success! We are always looking for more parents to get involved. There is no expectation, an hour or two whenever you can spare it goes a long way. In addition to making a big difference in our school community, our children love when we are involved.
If you would like to be added to our volunteer pool, please email fundraising@gumdalesspc.org.au and you will be notified via SignUp Genius when volunteering opportunities arise throughout the year.
Fundraising Calendar
We are very excited about this year’s calendar. Please ‘save the date’ for the events detailed below. Details for each event will be published in the newsletter, and on social media, closer to the date.

Messages from the Team
We are so excited for this year!
We still have positions for 2019. If you are thinking of enrolling or re-enrolling your child into YMCA Gumdale OSHC, then now is the time to do so!
Come talk to our friendly staff in our OSHC Building for a 2019 Enrolment Form. We would be happy to help you with all the information you need and even give you a tour of our facilities.
What has been happening at YMCA Gumdale OSHC?
We have been celebrating Valentine’s Day for a whole week! The kids have enjoyed creating beautiful pieces of artwork for their Valentines and making some delicious Valentines goodies.
We have also been discussing serious topics in our morning Yarning Circles such as natural disasters and how we can help, following on from the Townsville Floods.
Our Educators had Safe Guarding Training ensuring all our staff are equipped with the knowledge on how to approach conversations when children are feeling emotional. Our team learnt a lot.
What is coming up at Gumdale OSHC?
This year we will be offering Professional Art Classes and Study Group. These classes will both start in Week 4 and have a 5 week trial period.
Professional Art Classes
These classes will be held on a Tuesday and Friday afternoon from 3:45 to 5pm. We can only have a maximum of 15 children for this class. Please book in by sending us an email.
Lesley has been an art teacher for over 25 years. Born in Scotland, she attended Glasgow School of Art where she gained a B.A. with Honours in Design, specialising in printed textiles. She decided that she wanted to pass on her knowledge and passion for the visual arts to children so did an extra year of study to become a qualified art teacher up to High School level.
After happily teaching art in a High School in Scotland, Lesley embarked on a one year teacher exchange where she swapped houses and jobs with an Australian teacher in Queensland and very quickly fell in love with Beautiful Australia. After returning to her life in Scotland and the cold, wet weather and grey skies, Lesley decided to pack her bags and call Australia home. She started off with a full-time teaching job at Windaroo Valley State High School and after a few years moved to Trinity Lutheran College where she taught for ten years. In 2012, Lesley finally decided to resign from her teaching position and set up her own small Arts business from her home in the Redlands. She currently teaches extra-curricular art to children in her Engaged in Art Studio as well as producing her own fine art and designing and making products for her online stores. Lesley is also a current staff member of the Y.M.C.A. OSHC at Gumdale where she does art and craft activities with the children.
These Art Classes include: The art classes will provide an opportunity for your child to explore art media, learn new skills and have fun along the way in a relaxed and supportive environment. This is an exciting time in a young child’s art journey as they express themselves through mark making, the joy of colour and the feel of paint on the canvas or clay in their hands. In these classes the children will also be story telling through their art, expressing their feelings about themselves, their culture and their environment. The children will be encouraged to try lots of new things which may mean going out of their comfort level in order to grow as little artists. We will be looking at famous artists' works and the children will be shown a range of techniques using a variety of media including: shading with pencils and charcoal; colour mixing, blending and painting techniques using watercolours and acrylics; mixed media such as collage, stencilling, stamping, scratch art and wax resist; scale and perspective; small clay sculptures. The children will be using the techniques and skills learned in the classes to produce small finished artworks in a range of subject matter, themes and styles such as cartoons and comic strips, manga, fantasy art, portraits and self-portraits, super heroes, caricatures, my family, my culture, under the ocean, rainforest creatures and lots more. The children will also play a big part in deciding what they would like to learn and encouraged to come up with their own ideas and themes from week to week.
YMCA OSHC Study Group
A new Study Group is available to our OSHC children. We will be holding the Study Group on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 4pm to 5pm. This will allow the children some afternoon tea and down time before getting back into their work.
Melissa and Haylee are both qualified teachers and have experience in working with children in Maths and English. Kim and Kirra are studying Primary Education with Kim in her 3rd year and Kirra in her 2nd year. All of these staff are enthusiastic to be part of this new initiative.
Please note that this is only a trial and if you would like your children to attend you must send us an email enquiry. We will need a minimum number of 8 children and a maximum of 30. If this proves successful we may look at extending this to mornings and other afternoons.
