Message from the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

Welcome to the first edition of the Gumdale State School newsletter for 2019. It’s been a positive and productive start to the school year and I would like to congratulate all students for arriving at school every day ready to learn. Children achieve more when they go to school all day, every school day. Please don’t keep your child away from school unnecessarily. As I said in my message last week, our expectations of students are high and we will continue to focus on Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar, Punctuation and Numeracy.

It was great to see our Year 3-6 students giving their absolute best at this week’s Senior Swimming Carnival at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre. I would like to thank all staff and our parent volunteers who helped the event run smoothly. A special thanks to James Doherty for his efforts in preparing and running such a big event.

We are beginning to roll out numerous programs around the school over the next week, including the start of many of our School Clubs. More information can be found in the Deputies’ messages.

I invite parents to attend our Leadership Induction Ceremony on Monday 11 February from 2:00pm in Hollis Hall when our new school leaders will be recognised.

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal
Gumdale State School

Reminders from the School

Student Attendance

All children MUST be present in their classroom for roll marking at 8:50am. Teachers will mark the roll and close it. Any child not in the classroom will be marked as absent. Children who arrive after the roll has closed will be required to go to the office to collect a LATE SLIP for presentation to their teacher.

Office staff will check and clear the Absence Line before 9:45am and a DAILY UNEXPLAINED ABSENCE report will be run. A generic SMS message will be sent to parents advising of their child’s absence and requesting an explanation.

Phone the Student Absence Line before 9:30am to inform of any/all occasions your child will be away from school. This is a 24hr recorded service, you can call it anytime. The STUDENT ABSENCE LINE number is 3902 8399; we suggest you store this number in your phone. Alternatively you can email absence details to admin@gumdaless.eq.edu.au or registered parents can utilise the QParents App. If you receive an SMS message, call the Student Absence Line to explain the absence OR if you believe your child should be at school contact the school office immediately to notify us.

Early Departures

From time to time, you may need to collect your child early from school. This may be in the case of illness, attending an appointment or family emergency. In all cases students must be signed out through the administration office.

Once you have signed your child out, administration staff will issue you with an early departure slip. This must be presented to the classroom teacher before your child can be released into your care (or that of the collecting adult).

Legally the school can only release your child into the care of an adult who is listed on the student’s personal details record as a guardian or emergency contact. Administration staff are able to check these details and verify the identity of the person collecting the child. In the event that a person comes to collect your child and their details are not recorded, administration staff will contact you to seek your instruction.

Student Contact Details

In the interests of smooth communication between the school and families, please take a moment to complete and return the Request to Amend Student Details form if any of your details have changed recently. This includes changes to:

  • Parents' phone numbers
  • Parents' email addresses
  • Home addresses
  • Emergency contacts and phone numbers
  • Court orders/Parenting agreements

Paper copies are available at school administration.

In addition, the Gumdale State School Parent Handbook can be downloaded below. Please take the time to look through this resource; it contains a wealth of information about the school that is valuable to both new and returning families.

Food Allergies and Nut Minimalization

Please be aware that we have a number of students attending our school who are at risk of anaphylaxis if exposed to nuts or other foods. As a community we work together to ensure we have the safest possible environment for all our students. Therefore we ask that you do not send nuts or nut products in your child’s lunchbox. This does not include products that are labelled as “May contain traces of nuts”. Additionally, our staff actively discourage students from sharing food with their peers during eating breaks. Please note:

  • If you are sending in food for a student’s birthday celebration, please advise our staff of the ingredients or provide the original packaging.
  • We encourage parents and carers of students at risk of anaphylaxis or with food intolerances to discuss their child’s individual needs with the class teacher.
  • Kindly ensure that you update your child’s school record if there are any changes such as a new diagnosis or change in action plan). This can be done at the front desk.

We thank you for your cooperation.

School Banking

Our School Banking program will recommence on Friday 8 February. Banking application kits are available from the front office. We are also in need of volunteers to help with school banking on Friday mornings from 9:00am in the school staff room. If you are able to help please come to the front office or email info@gumdaless.eq.edu.au

News from the Payment Desk

Digital Subscriptions for Non-iPad Classes

Letters are being sent home regarding the $6.00 Digital Subscription for students in non-iPad classes. The year level applicable subscription includes access to resources such as Typing Tournament, Soundwaves and Bug Club. Please return the subscription form and make payment as soon as possible.

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place One School will produce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have not paid. This is a system generated document which will clear your students account for this excursion. If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.

Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.

Prompt payment is of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you, payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.

Paying your school invoices

All excursions and events require payment and a permission form to be returned by the due date or your child will not be permitted to attend.

Please note that payments can be made one of four ways:

  1. Online using the BPOINT Payment Gateway or from the invoice using the BPOINT link
  2. Phone banking via BPOINT IVR (1300 631 073)

Welcome back to a new year of learning at Gumdale State School. A special welcome to all families who are joining our school community in 2019. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to speak with many families last Wednesday evening at our Meet the Teacher sessions. We look forward to learning together with you and your child throughout the year.

Message from Mrs Herbert

First days are always exciting and especially for our brand new Prep students. Even though the first day of school for 2019 was hot and humid, the students all walked through the gates smiling, ready to meet friends and learn new things. Our Prep students settled quickly and were eager to chat at break times about all the things they were already learning!

Prep parents and students will etch this day in their memories as it signifies the beginning of an educational journey that will span many years and that will take place in many different settings. The key to the journey being successful is parents and teachers working together to support and guide the students. We understand that parents are the first teachers of children. We also know that parents will continue to teach and influence their children long after all formal schooling has finished. We value your input and look forward to a successful 2019 as we work together to give our students a great year.

Message from Miss Scott

Firstly, a huge welcome back to you all, especially our new members of the Gumdale family. Both staff and students had a very productive first week back, getting to know each other, setting up classroom expectations and learning about our GROW expectations.

On assembly last week, I told the students about a fabulous picture story book called, ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’ In this book, the author explains how everyone is walking around with an invisible bucket. When our bucket is full, we feel happy and when our bucket is empty we might be feeling sad. We then talked about filling each other’s’ buckets by doing nice things for each other and saying positive and caring words. Throughout the rest of the first week, I had many students share stories of how they had filled classmates’ and family members’ buckets. It was heart-warming listening to these stories and I look forward to hearing more.

School Road Safety Reminder

As we embark on a new school year, it is important to remember the importance of some basic road safety rules around school. Please drive carefully remembering the 40km/h speed zones. Be mindful of children and their parents walking and cycling to school, as well as those students catching buses or waiting to be picked up by parents in vehicles. Schools can be very busy places at drop off and pick up time, and your courtesy and patience are appreciated.

Park on which side?

Many of us never give a second thought as to which side of the road we should drop off or collect our children. It is much safer for your children and other motorists if your children leave the car from the rear kerb side door. Your child will know this door as ‘the safety door’. This stops children getting out of the car into oncoming traffic and reduces their risk of being injured. When using the Stop, Drop and Go zone, all students must enter the car from the kerb side door. It is also safer if you park on the school side of the road. Please take care not to park in the ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Stopping’ areas marked around our school as this places children at unnecessary risk.

Crossing the road safely

Talk to your child about how to cross the road safely by identifying and choosing the safest places to cross the road. These are:

  • a pedestrian (zebra) crossing – teach them to only cross when cars have stopped for them
  • pedestrian traffic lights – teach them to only cross when they can see the ‘green man’ or the green WALK sign and never cross when they can see a ‘red man’ or the red DON’T WALK sign.

Always Hold Hands

Parents and carers should always hold hands with children when they are near traffic, or the road. Young children lack the skills, knowledge, and judgement to be able to cope with traffic and therefore need to be constantly supervised.

As parents and carers, you can set a good example for your children on how to be safe as a passenger, pedestrian, cyclist and driver by taking the time to talk about what your child can see when walking or driving with you in the car.

Clubs

Our enrichment program begins next week with a diverse range of learning opportunities offered before, during and after school this semester. Students are encouraged discuss options with parents before selecting areas of interest from the clubs of offer. An email sent earlier this week outlines the options available with additional enrichment activities offered as they present throughout the year.

Swimming Carnival

The Year 3-6 swimming carnival was a great success this week with high levels of student participation across all year levels. All students are to be congratulated on their sportsmanship and outstanding behaviour on the day. A big thank-you to both our staff and parent volunteers who made the day such a success.

Student Leadership Induction Ceremony

Our Student Leadership Induction Ceremony is being held this Monday afternoon from 2:00pm in Hollis Hall. During the ceremony elected students will be presented with their leadership badges and all student leaders, including our Year 6 students, will be recognised for their commitment to serving the school throughout 2019.

QParents

The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:

  • Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
  • Behaviour information
  • Academic report cards
  • Class timetables
  • Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
  • Viewing and updating student details, including medical conditions and address
  • Enrolment details

We will be rolling out Q-Parents to Prep 2019 parents on 25 February 2019. Please check your inbox for your Q-Parents invite. More information can be downloaded below.

Resource Centre

Our well-equipped resource centre (library) provides a wide range of resources including picture books, novels, up-to-date non-fiction resources, a computer lab and material to support the curriculum.

All classes visit the library each week and we encourage children to borrow books, using their allocated borrower number. Students in years P-2 can borrow one book for one week, while students in years 3-6 may borrow two books at a time. Students in years P-2 must use a library bag to transport their book to and from school. Library bags are available from the Uniform Shop, or via Flexischools. Students can visit the library during first or second breaks to read, borrow books, or enjoy the games that are available.

If your child requires more time to finish reading their book, they can bring it back to the library and renew it. We will issue overdue notices to students who do not return their library books; they will lose borrowing privileges until they return all their books. If a book is lost, torn or damaged we request a donation of $10 towards replacement costs.

Scholastic Books

Scholastic Book sales is underway again this year. The first catalogue has been handed out and the due date is Thursday 14 February. All purchases made through Scholastic books raise funds for the Library to purchase extra books.

GROW Values and Social-Emotional Wellbeing

At Gumdale State School, our key values are: Great Learners, Respectful, Organised and Work Together Safely (GROW). These values are discussed, modelled and reinforced daily however each term we highlight one GROW value. This year, the termly overview is:

Term 1 - Great Learners:

  • We are good listeners
  • We always try our best - "I can attitude"
  • We know it's ok to make mistakes

Term 2 - Respectful:

  • We treat others how we would like to be treated
  • We speak kindly and use our manners
  • We always act in friendship first

Term 3 - Organised:

  • We have all equipment ready
  • We are always ready to learn
  • We make sure we have everything we need for the day

Term 4 - Working Together Safely:

  • We work as a team
  • We share
  • We look out for each other - friendship first

We use the You Can Do It! Program to practice and reinforce these values. The keys to success in You Can Do It! are Getting Along, Resilience, Persistence, Organisation and Confidence. We also use the “Howbadzzat Catastrophe Scale” around the school to promote the development of emotional resilience and self-regulation. The scale helps students to put things into perspective and manage their emotional stress.

If you have any questions, or would like any more information on our social-emotional wellbeing program please contact Genevieve Agerholm at gager1@eq.edu.au, or through the front office.

Digital Technologies

Thank you to the iPad families for a wonderful start to 2019! Students have turned up on the first day with all their equipment and iPads set up ready to go.

Please remember the following tips to help maintain your child’s iPad:

  • Charge the iPad every day
  • Back up the iPad at least once a week through iCloud or iTunes
  • Make sure photos and videos are uploaded to a PC and deleted from the iPad when not required anymore
  • Turn the device off at least once a week
  • Clear app history once a week (double click home button and swipe pages out – towards top of screen)
  • Clear web browser once a week
  • Remind children that iPads are learning tools and not toys for games
  • Minimise home gaming apps on the device

We also request that the iPad Participation and Third Party Agreement forms be signed and the Digital Levy payment of $35 paid ASAP. This will ensure your child has access to Mathletics, Spelling City, Typing Tournment, EQ Library and Soundwaves. Access to these subscriptions will commence from Week 4 this term. These forms were handed out in late last year however they are also available alongside the 2019 App Lists on the school website or contact your child’s class teacher for a copy.

If you have any questions regarding the iPad program, please contact our Digital Technology Coaches, Sally Connell (shull11@eq.edu.au) and Andrew Ward (award43@eq.edu.au).

Bayside District Trials

Information about the Bayside District Sporting trials throughout 2019 are listed below. Students will need to follow the strict criteria laid out by the district if they are wishing to trial. Please fill in the below form if your child would like to be considered to trial for a sport. Only a limited number of Gumdale State School students can be considered per sport.

Important things to remember

  • Students born in 2007, 2008 and 2009 can trial.
  • Students need to have experience in the sport.
  • Current club experience is preferred.
  • As each school is limited in the number of students they can send to a trial, an in-school trial may be necessary to decide which students are able to attend the trial
  • Please fill out the form correctly. All information will need to be filled out for your child to be considered.
  • Students eligible to trial will be given all the necessary paperwork to complete and take to the trial. Without the correct paperwork a student will be unable to participate at a trial.
  • Students attend the trial (ensuring they take all the required paperwork with them and hand it directly to the trial coordinator).
  • Please Note: Parents/Carers are responsible for transporting and supervising their child at the trial

Choirs at Gumdale will commence next week (Week 3), see days and times below. Being part of a choir not only helps to develop singing and improve musicianship, but builds on performance skills, confidence, team work & relationships all while having great fun!

Official Sign-Up will occur in the first rehearsal, with a short meeting about the program and performances this year. All rehearsals will be held in the STEAM Music Room. If you love singing or would like to check it out, NEW members as well as those continuing are welcome to join.

“Choir is awesome! Can’t wait for it to start! I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting some new ones there.” – Ashleigh Rogers (2019 Cultural Captain)

If you are continuing with choir you may keep your folder from last year and add to your collection of songs.

Instrumental Music 2019

A few notes for assistance organising the start of the New Year:

  • Instrumental Music Lessons begin Week 3, continuing students on Mondays and beginning students on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
  • Timetables and a full year Music Events Calendar will be sent home with students this week.
  • Senior Concert Band Rehearsal begins Week 3 on Monday mornings before school in the STEAM Music Room. Arrive at 7:30 for a 7:40am sharp start.
  • Senior Concert Band is for any student beginning their second or third year of the Instrumental Program (Year 5 & 6).
  • Beginner Concert Band will not begin until the first Wednesday after Beginner Band Week Day Camp (Wednesday 19 June).
  • Beginner Concert Band is for any student beginning their first year of the Instrumental Program.

All Instrumental students have access to an intensive Music "Camp" at their level this year (2 Camps, Beginner and Senior). All students in the program are expected to be on time, prepared, and ready to participate at all lessons, rehearsals and performance events, unless negotiation with Mrs Thomas has occurred prior to the events. Failure to attend events without notice is detrimental to the team's performance, so please contact Mrs Thomas on vthom38@eq.edu.au at any time BEFORE the event or rehearsal.

This year we are having a commitment rewards excursion to Southbank to a concert of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra for all members of the Gumtrees and Senior Band who fulfil the criteria of 90% attendance at rehearsals and performances, with no un-explained absences.

“It was a challenge to keep up the practise in the holidays, but now that band is starting again it will be easier. Can’t wait for the year ahead.” – Ruby Beake (2019 Cultural Captain)

We're back and very excited about our Gumtree Eatery! It is sporting a colourful mural and the children love it. This year our menu has more delicious dishes, homemade with plenty of fresh ingredients. Check out the new meatball sub, mexican beef for our nachos, delicious new beef patties, scrumptious gluten-free banana and coconut loaf and the moist gluten-free chocolate slice. Helen will keep you informed by posting these on the P&C Facebook page.

The Lucky winner of our competition to rename our Tuckshop is Jacob R, so now we are called "Gumtree Eatery". Congratulations Jacob and thank you to all the other children that submitted their creative ideas on what to rename our tuckshop.

Last year we had many kind and helpful people lending a hand at the Eatery and this year we are calling out again for more volunteers. We had so much fun with you all and would love to see new faces and the regular volunteers. The men helped us out last year too and this is fantastic so any dads or granddads that have an hour to spare we will welcome you with open arms. Messages from the Team

We are so excited for this year!

We still have positions for 2019. If you are thinking of enrolling or re-enrolling your child into YMCA Gumdale OSHC then now is the time to do so!

Come talk to our friendly staff in our OSHC Building for a 2019 Enrolment Form. We would be happy to help you with all the information you need and even give you a tour of our facilities.

What has been happening at YMCA Gumdale OSHC?

We had a jam packed Summer Holiday program. We had 13 Excursions and 4 Incursions and 23 super fun service days. Our excursions filled up so fast, using the school mini bus to take 24 children on a more intimate, exciting excursion has made a huge difference in our holiday program. Our incursions were bigger than ever having record breaking numbers and hosting different activities such as; water slides, sea life, an amazing race and henny penny hatchlings.

Thankyou to Sally for programming all our fantastic service days, keeping the children entertained and engaged through out the entire holiday program.

We have started Term One of 2019 off strong with a very exciting colourful program! James our Education Leader has been working hard on planning a great program for you children to enjoy while they are here this year, making sure we are staying up to date with what the kids are enjoying and listening to ALL their feedback.

What is coming up at Gumdale OSHC?

Our family BBQ is coming up on 29 March. We want to welcome all families to the event, whether you are an existing family or looking to send your children here.
