Message from the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

Gumdale State School continues to be a hive of activity across all year levels as we approach the end of the school year. Our Prep students for 2019 visited Gumdale last week for their orientation morning and next week we host our Year 6 Graduation. It is sure to be a special evening celebrating the achievements of these students as they move on to high school. We also invite all parents and carers to attend our final full school assembly on Monday 10 December at 2:00pm.

If your child is in Prep to Year 5 and is not returning to Gumdale State School in the New Year, please contact the administration staff as soon as possible. This assists us with our planning for 2019.

Well done to our Year 5 students who represented our school well in their time at Emu Gully last week. By all accounts it was a fantastic experience and I thank all staff who chaperoned. Next week it is our Year 4 cohort’s turn as they attend camp at Currimundi on the Sunshine Coast. I wish them all well.

Finally, it has been great to see the generosity shown by our students and community during the recent fundraisers for Micah Projects, Fiver for a Farmer, Morningside State School and Givit. What an excellent community we are a part of. Thank you for giving.

Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

Uniform Expectations

Even during the cooler months of the year, hats are required to be worn to school every day. There appears to be an increase in the number of students coming to school without a hat to wear. In accordance with our Sun Safe Policy students are required to wear a Gumdale State School reversible wide-brimmed surf hat. Students are expected to wear the hat for all outdoor activities. Please ensure all hats are clearly labelled, for ease of return if misplaced.

End of Year Organisation

With the increased number of events happening in the lead up to the end of the school year, please continue to check our social media communication vehicles such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Please also ensure that your contact details, particularly email addresses, are updated at the office if details have changed. At this time of the year, many of our classroom teachers are emailing correspondence detailing changes to routines and special events/celebrations.

Prep & Year 1 News

Last week we welcomed our new Preps for orientation day. This really brought home how quickly time flies. Our year six students were very helpful at the event acting as guides and official welcomers.

Our current preps attended the Jollybops Science Show which opened their minds even further to the excitement of scientific endeavour.

Next week some of our year one students will have their first ride in the Gumdale school bus. The upcoming picnic excursion to Lota Park is a culminating experience to the year one's study of healthy food choices.

Year 2 & 3 News

Throughout this term, I have had the pleasure of visiting our wonderful Year 2 and 3 classrooms on a weekly basis. During this time, I chat to students about the work they are completing and celebrate their achievements and the effort they contribute on a daily basis. Some students choose to read to me, some share work they have created using an iPad app and others share the wonderful writing they have been creating. All of the students I meet with are able to explain the expectations of the task, define the elements that they need to include to reach their goals and share how they have used the feedback their teacher has provided to up-level their work. I cannot share all of these pieces and conversations, so I have chosen a variety from the two year levels.

Artic Community

In the middle of the dark night,
Artic wolves are giving animals a freaky fright.

I can see:
Cold white snow stretching over the long land,
Arctic penguins waddling through the cold night.
In this artic community there is not a speck of sand,
Fierce arctic animals having a big fight.

I can hear:
Howl! Howl! Arctic wolf howling for it’s pack,
Thump! Thump! Polar bears running through the soft snow.
Squish! Squish! Arctic wolf following the penguins track,
Boom! Boom! Polar bears dancing, going with the flow.

I can feel:
The cold breeze blowing through my hair,
Little pretty penguins waddling through the soft snow.
The ground shaking from the big polar bear,
All the arctic animals are putting on a show.
In this Artic Community

Clouds

There are bright clouds and fluffy clouds,
White clouds and grey.
Bright clouds you can see through,
Clouds that fly in your way.

Clouds that go down,
Like a big gassy wall.
Clouds that blend in softly
And don’t blend at all.

Clouds that rain lightly,
Clouds that can pour.
And tiny clouds that come at you
And land in the shore.

Cat Cat

Cat, cat, where do you play?
With some string on a good day.

Car, cat, what do you drink?
A cold white milk from the sink.

Cat, cat, what do you see?
A big juicy milky watering bee.

Cat, cat, why do you sleep?
So I am up the next day with a new peep.

Year 4 - 6 News

Year 5 Camp

The Year 5 students had a wonderful three days at Emu Gully Adventure Camp at Helidon last week. Students participated in a number of team challenges across their time at the camp and took time to reflect on the characteristics of leadership. Mr Doherty, Ms Mitchell and the Year 5 teaching staff are to be thanked for their organisation and support of this camp for our students.

Student Leadership

Year 5 students have been refining their persuasive speech writing skills in class this term in preparation for school leadership opportunities in 2019. Students who nominated for school captain roles presented speeches to the Years 3 to 5 students yesterday. All students who participated are to be congratulated on the high quality of their speeches.

Next week students who have nominated for the positions of House Captain, Cultural Captain and STEM Captain will present their speeches. Our student leaders for next year will be announced at our final assembly this term.

Graduation

The finishing touches are being made by the Year 6 teachers, students and specialist teachers in preparation for the graduation ceremony in the Hollis Hall on Thursday 6 December. We look forward to taking this time to reflect upon and celebrate the learning, friendships and opportunities that lie ahead in high school.

School Council

The School Council met on 15 November 2018 for its fourth quarter meeting. Over the past two years the current School Council has operated very much as a learning process, both in terms of its role having strategic oversight of the running of the school, and in terms of the non-teaching members - parents and community representatives – gained understanding of educational concepts and the culture and operations of the education structure in Queensland.

During this period, we have seen our role as supporting the direction of Gumdale State School as a high quality educational institution, with a strong focus on STEAM education, sport and community engagement. So, members were delighted to receive a presentation at our recent meeting from Ms Sheppard, one of the school’s STEAM teachers, on the many solid achievements of STEAM education at Gumdale. These included:

  • Integration of STEM units into the broader curriculum, for example in areas of reading and writing;
  • Visits by significant experts in professional occupations;
  • Use of iPads and specialised software applications;
  • Participation by students in broader social activities, such as National Science Week;
  • Computer coding, including a lunchtime and after school Coding Club;
  • Robotics, rockets, and sustainability focus elements.

One of the key areas of concern for the Council has been to retain high performing staff at the school, and a number of discussions have been had at meetings on how Council might assist the leadership team in achieving this. Three important aspects have been identified:

  1. Having the Council involved in any future process that might be required to replace the Principal, either in a temporary secondment or recruitment of new Principal at some point. Council believes that it is important to maintaining the strategic direction of the school that its participation in such a process is accepted by the Education Department.
  2. To encourage staff retention, Council has identified that there needs to be the ability to provide incentives, and this generally requires funding. Because the current constitution of the Council prevents it holding funds, Council believes that the most likely source of funds would come from the generation of sponsorships.
  3. Staff retention is also encouraged by recognition, and Council has implemented a Staff Recognition Award system, which identifies one staff member each term deserving of special recognition for work over and above.

In terms of sponsorships, the school has been notable in achieving a number of significant community sponsorships in the past two years, including for the lease of a bus. Recently, Council proposed using the naming rights for the front oval as a way of attracting new sponsorship.

Council also had oversight of the naming of the new oval after Paul Green, a former student and national rugby player and coach, who attended the naming ceremony with his family and spoke to the student body about his time at Gumdale.

The Term 4 Staff Recognition Award has been given to Ms Melissa McLennan. Melissa wears many hats in her roles as a teacher, a parent and community member at Gumdale. She has been recognised this term by the Council for her liaison between the school staff and the P&C for the community event, ‘A Day on the Oval’.

Council has monitored NAPLAN performance, and is pleased to note the continued achievement of the school in results, with recorded improvements across many areas.

Council has also been delighted to see the outstanding performance of many Gumdale students in sporting activities, including Cross Country, Girls in Sport, Athletics, Touch Football, and areas such as swimming, sailing and team sports.

With the P&C Association represented on the Council, the Council has also had the opportunity to recognize the outstanding work undertaken by parents to support initiatives of the P&C to contribute to the better conditions and facilities at the school.

Council would like to express its appreciation for the contribution of all staff, parents and community supporters alike for working together to achieve so much for the school over the past 12 months. Specific thanks go to our outgoing Council members Ms Gretchen Mander-Jones, Ms Renae Northcott and Terese Cosgrave for their service.

Sustainability @ Gumdale

Sustainability Steve spent week 7 with 2S and week 8 with 4S to celebrate their great efforts with making Gumdale more sustainable. Keep up the great work!

Jackson S, a year 4 student has shown great initiative and enthusiasm by writing a letter to Mr Savill regarding how he would like to help reduce our landfill waste and raise money for the school. Jackson and his family collected the glass, plastic, aluminium and popper cartons at the school disco and processed them at the new Tingalpa recycling centre. Jackson and his family raised $33 for the school.

Tips

  • There are many pieces of whole untouched fruit being thrown away. We encourage students to take uneaten lunch home.
  • Only unprocessed fruit and vegetable scraps in the organics bin please. No bread, crackers, meats or dairy as this will attract cockroaches, mice and rats which in turn attract snakes.

Year 1

The Year 1 students enjoyed their Cheeky Changes workshop and show. They were guided through a procedure and discussions to make, describe and compare physical changes of PVA bouncy balls that they got to take home.

Year 3

The Year 3 students have been working on their shadow puppet shows as the culminating activity for their Night and Day science unit.

Year 4

The Year 4 students are displaying amazing design skills as they create new textile products from unwanted items.

Year 6

In Science this term the Year 6 students have been studying various changes and classifying them as chemical or physical and reversible or irreversible. They engaged in hands on investigations using vinegar and bicarb to understand the variables that effect the speed of the reaction.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9NSbh1G-iI

The students have also looked at changes in the real world and in particular within the human digestive system. They were asked to pretend that they were a piece of food travelling through the digestive system and write an imaginative short story describing their journey.

Messages from the Team

2019 Enrolments are new OPEN! Please enrol or re-enrol your children as soon as possible to guarantee a place at YMCA Gumdale OSHC. We have big plans in store for next year and hope to have your children on board. If you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us!

What has been happening at YMCA Gumdale OSHC?

We have started ‘Running around Australia.’ Each lap of the oval is 400m and we have to run 14,063 kilometres to run around Australia. We have been tallying each child’s laps and adding up how far everyone has run all together each day.

The children have been getting super involved and are very competitive as we have a leader board of 10 children up on the wall.

It is great to see the children participating in physical activity every day and really enjoying it. There is a lot of morale around the competition and everyone is cheering each other on. We have also had parents and educators get involved!

What is coming up at Gumdale OSHC?

Summer Holidays are just around the corner and we cannot wait.

We have been planning our summer holiday program for a few weeks now and have a lot of super exciting activities, incursions and mini excursions planned for the children.

Our team of educators are in the midst of getting all the materials and equipment and training to equip them for a fantastic Summer Holiday program. We are all so excited to have your children join us.

We still have spaces available on all mini excursions, incursions and service days.

Enrol your child now so they don’t miss out on the fun!

Prep school hats have been ordered, but will not be available for collection with the Prep Packs until early next year. You can still order and purchase the Prep Pack and collect a new school hat next year. The current or old style school hats can still be worn and are still available for purchase from the Uniform Shop until sold out.

Samples of the new school hat will be available to view in the Uniform Shop on the days/hours the Uniform Shop is open.

Prep Packs

Preferred purchasing of Prep Packs is through Flexischools. Register your child via the link below under the class 'Prep Starter 2019'. Pre-ordered Prep Packs can be collected in January from the old Uniform Shop downstairs opposite the Tuckshop under B Block.

Update from the Fundraising Team!

Disco

Once again the P&C School Disco was a great success. Hundreds of students danced the night away and enjoyed the BBQ and treats on offer. A massive thank you to all the volunteers who helped before, during and after the disco. School community events like this would be impossible to run without the support of both staff and parent helpers. We appreciate each of you! The total raised from this Disco was $5480 which is a great result.

Volunteering

The year may nearly be drawing to a close but it is not too late to volunteer your time. We are always looking for volunteers for the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop so if you can offer assistance, please email fundraising@gumdalesspc.org.au
