Message from the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill
Welcome to Term 4, we are off to a great start. It will be a busy 8 weeks ahead including the continuation of our swimming program, camps for Year 4 and Year 5, music performances and Year 6 Graduation. Next week we welcome Sarah Scott who will join the Gumdale team in the role of Deputy Principal to Years 2 & 3. Thank you to Andrew Ward for his contribution as Acting Deputy Principal for the past 2 weeks.
At this week’s Full School Assembly we recognised a significant number of students who have attained great success across all areas of our school including ICAS English High Achievers, Maths Mastermind winners and our Cross Country Age Champions. Well done students!
During week 1, we welcomed Paul Green and his family for the naming ceremony of our new school oval ‘The Paul Green Oval’. Paul is a past student of Gumdale State School, a former professional Rugby League player and head coach for the North Queensland Cowboys in the NRL. After the unveiling of the sign, Mr Green spoke to our students, giving them some great advice on the benefits of hard work and always doing one’s best.
A reminder about parking around Gumdale State School; please be considerate of our community neighbours when dropping off and picking up students. Eastside Village car parking is provided for customers and patrons utilising these shops and services. Please use the school car park and drop off/pickup zone when transporting students. Car parking is also available along Formosa Road, Tilley Road, New Cleveland Road and Dianthus Street.
Parking laws, road rules and street and carpark signs need to be adhered to at all times.
Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal
Gumdale State School

Senior School News
Sumo Robot Competition
On Monday 15 October two teams went to our first inter-school robotics competition at Calamvale Community College. The teams worked hard prior to the event building, programming, testing, evaluating and adjusting their Sumo Robots, Zoot and CP-30 for the competition. On the day, there were 26 teams and 13 rounds of sumo battles. Both teams did a fantastic job of making build and programming changes on the fly as well as showing exceptional sportsmanship. While we didn’t take home the prize, it was a great experience, we learnt a lot and everyone was very excited about competing again in the future.

During the first week of term 4 all Year 1-6 classes took part in a Sustainability Workshop. They looked at lunch waste and how to better dispose of their rubbish. Students explored the Kitchen Garden Club edible gardens and worm farms. All eating areas at Gumdale SS now have 3 bin options and we have invested in two new vermin proof composting bins.

Instrumental
Recruiting for Instrumental Music 2019:
All Year 3 students have completed Aural aptitude tests in Classroom Music time. Using this data, Classroom Music results from Semester 1 and feedback from teachers on class behaviour and homework, a short list of students has been tested on mouthpieces and instruments. The first round of offer letters have already been sent out. Places are dependent on numbers continuing in the program in all Years 4-6, as time and lesson size is limited. If you did not get a letter of offer for the first round, your child will be on a ranked waiting list for a place.
If your child misses out, it would be worthwhile investigating private lessons on their chosen instrument. It is possible that a place will open up for students who can privately purchase or hire an instrument at the start of the following year (Year 5) and students will be at level with their peers. The instruments in the band program are:
Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Bass Guitar and Percussion (Drums & Glockenspiel).
A great link for investigating which instrument to choose is:
WAMM Camp
.jpg)
What a camp WAMM Camp was! The students representing Gumdale improved their individual and group musicianship skills, made new friends and had a lot of fun. We were proud to have you representing music at Gumdale State School. One of the guest conductors, Dr Rod McWilliams, advocated for the benefits of learning an instrument in Primary School. Messages from the Team
2019 Enrolments are new OPEN! Please enrol or re-enrol your children as soon as possible to guarantee a place at YMCA Gumdale OSHC.
We have big plans in store for next year and hope to have your children on board!
If you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us!
What is New at YMCA Gumdale OSHC?
During the Spring Vacation Care period, the kids and staff were put to work. They did a lot of painting, sanding and building to create some new masterpieces for the service. They made a tyre garden, which is displayed at the front of our service beside the stairs. They made new tyre chairs, which are living in the quiet room. They made a new cubby house, created to be a quiet, peaceful space for children to escape to, which is currently living at the back of the veranda. They also made a palette bed for the playroom, to create another quiet space at the service.
The projects were so fun to create with the children and they all really got involved
Educators Professional Development
Charlotte has recently participated in MAPA training (Management of Actual or Potential Aggression). "MAPA® has proved to be successful in equipping staff with safe and effective physical interventions to manage the more challenging and aggressive behaviour experienced from time to time in our service."
Fiona McClelland, Head of Policy & Practice, Action on Hearing Loss.
Activities and Projects
During the last fortnight of Term 3, the children explored the country of Canada. Chez had only recently been to Canada to visit her daughter (who lives there) therefore she created the program off her knowledge, experiences and research. The program really drew from Canada’s past and history. It was truly a great learning experience for all the children. They all loved getting involved in the activities. The children created ‘Wanted’ posters, learnt about the dinosaurs that used to roam around Canada’s land and did some tribal rock paintings.
Spring Vacation Care was an absolute hit! Firstly, we would like to thank Haylee for creating and planning such an amazing program for the kids. Every single day was planned to the minute with great, age appropriate activities for all the children. Thank you to James for organising all the mini excursions and incursions. They all went smoothly, the children were so well behaved, we could not have been happier.
The kids created / got involved in some awesome activities this vacation care period. The made their own obstacle courses, they got to eat edible slime, they got involved in some wood work, they got loud with the karaoke machine and soaked themselves on the inflatable water slides. They developed their teamwork skills by participating in group games and problem solving. They worked on their imagination skills, when told to design and create something out of the box.

Now to the good news! We have a brand new look and delicious new improved meal choices and we are now sporting a new name ‘The Gumtree Eatery’. The P&C ran a competition before the holiday break to rename the tuckshop which was won by Year 2 student Jacob R. As well as naming the tuckshop Jacob has won a $20 voucher to use at the tuckshop. Many of you will have seen the beginning of our new mural and we will be adding some colourful characters to the front of the tuckshop over the term.
Don’t forget all meal orders for the Tuckshop for first and second breaks must be ordered through Flexischools by 8:30am each day. Only snacks, drinks and slushies are sold over the counter for cash (except for Prep students) during first and second breaks. Students who have made an order to purchase something frozen, or a plain milk cup or something with custard or yoghurt, will need to come to the Tuckshop to collect the item. A green smiley face or a red star on your bag means you must bring the bag to the Tuckshop to collect the item which can’t be sent to your classroom.
The tuckshop will be releasing a new menu especially for staff members at GSS. This menu will also be offered to the children and can be ordered through the Flexischool system.
Sushi is back! Available on Wednesdays, homemade sushi with fresh ingredients will be at the Gumdale Eatery.
Watch out for our daily and weekly specials! The Gumdale Eatery will be featuring theme days. This will give the children an opportunity to have an alternative choice to our standard menu selection.
Over the past couple of months the tuckshop has improved many of our meals to offer fresher ingredients all made on location at the Gumdale Eatery. Just to name a few , we have Gluten Free Fried Rice, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Mac n’ Cheese, Butter Chicken, Croutons and Cheesy Dip.
The Gumdale Eatery wouldn’t be the success that it is without our volunteers. Our volunteers play an integral part of the tuckshop operation. If you have any spare time (every hour helps) you will be welcomed with open arms. If you are interested come and have a chat with our friendly convenors.
Gumdale Eatery aims to please so if you have any suggestions to assist us please drop them into the suggestion box at the tuckshop.

Lost property is located in boxes at School Admin or at the YMCA Gumdale. Please clearly label all items with a first name and surname, especially hats and jumpers. Items cannot be returned to students if the only label visible on the item is just a first name. If your child has lost any items, please regularly check the lost property boxes and remember it may take a few days for items to turn up in the boxes.
The Uniform Shop fire sale continues as we try to reduce over-stocked items. All marked down items are now available to order online through Flexischools. The items will also be available to purchase from the Uniform Shop when open and are only available while stocks lasts.

If you have not received your order, please check with your child’s teacher first. The Uniform Shop volunteers deliver items to the pigeon holes on Monday and Thursday after 9:30pm or you can pick items up from the Uniform Shop during Uniform Shop trading days and hours.

Update from the Fundraising Team!
Fun Run
The annual School Fun Run held on 14 September raised an amazing $19,665.61 for our school. In addition to the prizes children have earned raising funds, the remaining prizes were announced at Assembly on Monday, as follows:
Manny K (Prep J) and Annabel M (Prep I) were the fundraising stars, each raising $605! Both students will receive a trophy and are in the draw to win a $2,900 Apple prize pack. The Top Fundraising class was Prep I who have won a pizza party! Everyone who raised more than $30 has been entered into a draw to win a holiday at SeaWorld Resort and this was won by Chole B (Prep B).
A huge congratulations to our winning students and a big thank you to everyone for their efforts in both fundraising and running this fun event.
Term 4 Events
Unfortunately a decision has been made to cancel the Bunnings BBQ. This has been removed from the calendar. Our final event for 2019 will be the P&C School Disco which will take place on 16 November. The fundraising team will share more information in the following newsletter.
