Message from the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

We made it! Term 3 is now coming to a close and what an incredibly busy 10 weeks we’ve had. From ICAS testing to excursions, Year 6 camp, sporting and academic tournaments, P&C’s Day on the Oval, the school Fun Run, sailing programs, signature programs, STEAM workshops, music camps and more. I’d like to thank all of our teachers, staff, students, volunteers and parents who have contributed in one way or another to make this term a great one!

As the weather starts to heat up, our PE program transitions into swimming in Term 4. This is a great opportunity for all year levels to stay active, refine their swimming skills and benefit from the excellent coaching provided by our partners, Aquatic Achievers in Chandler. If you have questions about our swimming program, please speak with Dr Doherty.

Speaking of sport, today is our School Cross Country; a great way to wrap up the end of term. Best of luck to all of our enthusiastic runners and participants. We look forward to acknowledging our Cross Country winners early next term.

As we prepare for the holidays, I ask for our school community to help keep watch of our premises. If you notice anything suspicious, please call the School Watch number on 13 17 88. Secondly, don’t forget that Code Camp is being held at Gumdale during the holidays from 24 to 26 September 2018. If you would like to register, visit the link below. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn more about the world of coding.

Reminders from the School

2019 Enrolments

A reminder to existing Gumdale State School families or prospective families in our catchment area looking to join in 2019: Please submit your enrolment applications now. All enrolment paperwork can be downloaded from our school website. If you have a question regarding how to enrol, please contact the school office on 3902 8333.

School Routines & Playtime Procedures

This term we are reviewing our before and after school routines as well as our playtime procedures. I remind parents that it is an expectation that students who arrive before the first bell are to move to the school hall or lower oval. Parents are welcome to accompany their child to these areas.

We are also reminding our students to be respectful of the school environment and we have communicated that they are not to play in our gardens or climb trees. This is for their safety as well as to ensure our school grounds maintain their high level of presentation.

We will continue to convey information about our routines and procedures to students so that they aware of our expectations. Please be aware that if students do not adhere to these expectations, they may be referred to the Responsible Thinking Classroom.

We thank you for your continued support to ensure our students are always their best.

Book Fair 2018

Gumdale State School will be holding their book fair from 17-19 October with the help of Carnival Book Fairs.

The Book Fair will be open before and after school 8:00 – 8:45am and 3:00 – 3:55pm for the three days. They will also be open during school time from Monday for teachers to bring their classes through and for the kids to fill out a wish list to take home. Stay tuned for more information.

Year 5 Aspire Higher Leadership Incursion

After the success of Unleashing Personal Potential with our year 6 students last term, we had Hogan and Cody at Gumdale for the day last week to run their ‘Aspire Higher’ leadership program with students in year 5. It was a full day of training with the whole cohort over three high impact sessions. Students participated in team builders, initiative, and problem solving activities with a servant leadership theme.

Students took part in a variety of activities and discussions:

  • LEADING WITH OR WITHOUT THE BADGE - example, influence and kindness,
  • THE EPIC RACE - outdoor, fast-paced team event (using our A.S.P.I.R.E. framework),
  • KNOWING ME, GROWING ME - understanding my strengths and those of others.

The students had a great day and their feedback was very positive.

The UPP incursion was a really educational experience for us Grade 5s. It taught us all about how to do leadership and work together with other people that we don't know. We found out that we don't have to have a badge to be a true leader, all we need is confidence and workmanship. My favourite part was when we chose someone we didn't know and got to get to know a little bit about them. Mia, 5G

In the Aspire lessons they taught us about how to be a great leader with or without a badge. We learned that A.S.P.I.R.E means action, serve, persist, influence, respect and encourage. The final session was about what type of leader you are – prophet, planner or people. Overall the Aspire day taught us that everyone is a leader. Chloe, 5R

The Aspire Higher taught us about being a great leader whether you have a badge or not. The two instructors, Hogan and Cody, taught us many fun and exciting activities that included teamwork and kindness. Kadence, 5R

We look forward to welcoming the team from Unleashing Personal Potential again next year.

Sustainability @ Gumdale X

Year 4 students have been sorting through their lunch waste to help answer their HASS Inquiry question ‘How can people use their environments more sustainably?’ They will be using Digital Technology to collate, sort and present their waste data in a variety of formats including informational tables and graphs. We are looking forward to the more sustainable solutions our creative Year 4 students come up with!

Year 2 students are working on trialling a great initiative ‘No Waste Wednesday’. The aim is for students to eliminate the landfill and recycling waste in their lunch box. Organic waste is fine so long as it is coming to the worm/compost bins and not going into the red rubbish bin.

https://healthy-kids.com.au/waste-free-lunch/

Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable!

Year 4

Students have been investigating whether eucalyptus oil compared with other oils has the ability to reduce/kill germs and slow mould growth.

STEAM Clubs

STEAM Signature Program

STEAM Signature students had a smashing time testing their prototype bridges! Well done to all teams for succeeding with the Challenge! The bridge designed and created by Danielle H, Emily E and Kirby W withstood more than 40kg!

Students used the engineering process to design, build and test a model bridge to help deliver disaster relief after an earthquake.

The bridge

  • could only be made of paddle pop sticks and PVA glue
  • had to span a 40cm gap
  • maximum height 20cm

Our next challenge looks at the problem of transporting fresh produce from high up in fertile mountain regions to markets in the valleys below. Many farmers around the world have no other option but to make this long, dangerous trek by foot taking them away from their farms for days at a time. Teams need to design, build and test a model that can transport as many cherry tomatoes as possible without squashing them.

The system must:

  • start from a height of 2 metres
  • travel at least 2 metres horizontally without touching the ground
  • no external energy source
  • not exceed budget constraints

Kitchen Garden

Kitchen Garden Club members were able to reap the benefits of their gardening efforts! We harvested good crops of thyme, baby carrots, snow and sugar snap peas, broccoli, nasturtium leaves and flowers. All plants were easily harvested by gently pinching the stems. Students noticed an abundance of ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae sp.) and wondered if these were harmful for the garden. We learned that some ladybird beetles are actually really good for our garden as they eat the harmful leaf-eating bugs, like aphids. There is the 28 spotted, or leaf-eating ladybird that we will need to monitor as they do like potato leaves. The simplest way to rid our garden of the pesky 28-spotted ladybird is to remove them by hand.

After washing our hands and veggies, the children made a simple dip of ricotta, thyme (from school garden), lemon zest and chive, from my garden) and sampled the fresh produce at the school's BBQ area. We made nasturtium wraps with the leaves and stuffed nasturtium flowers which looked so pretty on a plate! The school staff were treated to a big plate of tasty, fresh snacks courtesy of the Club. One serving of vegetables down before 9am!

Did you know? Nasturtium leaves, stems and flowers are all edible . A native of Peru, they are very high in vitamin C and have some antimicrobial properties which help our bodies to fight off flus and colds. They have a spicy, peppery taste (like rocket) that paired well with our dip and can be added to salads and stir-fries for colour and flavour. The seeds can be used in place of capers! A great all around kitchen plant that grows and self-seeds exceptionally well.

Our next harvest will be early next term when our large crop of potatoes and silverbeet will be coming out of the ground and onto our plates.

We have started to think about how we could make the garden boxes visually beautiful. First, we measured the boxes so we know how much area we have to work with. We then took some inspiration from Pinterest and thought about what designs we might be able to create using recycled plastic bottle tops. The students are now busy thinking about the design they would like to create. Each student made lid 'bugs' (one to take home and one for the school garden). We will continue to work on the mural plans over the coming weeks while we collect lids to achieve our designs.

Thank you to our parent and teacher volunteers – Kate Tatham, Genevieve Agerholm and Peta Beven.

Volunteers – We have a couple of small building projects requiring tools, skills and time. Please contact Amanda Sheppard if you can help in any way.

  • We have a second hand bath tub that we would like to convert into a worm garden. We have design plans.
  • Garden waste compost bins to be made from second hand pallets. We have the pallets and design ideas.

Donations of plastic lids (not metal), mulch, and soil for the garden are appreciated and can be dropped to the STEAM Centre.

YEAR 3 FAMILIES & INSTRUMENTAL RECRUITMENT

Some information about the recruiting timeline for 2019:

The first round of offers will be sent out early next term. No-one has yet been offered a place in the program. At this stage, the data of our aural tests (which all Year 3's do) has been gathered and ranked, and I have mouthpiece and instrument tested the first group who may be eligible for the first round of offers. The actual numbers of students I can teach is limited.

The students are ranked using aural test (rhythmic and melodic) data, I mouthpiece test approximately the number that my time allocation at Gumdale can take in the intake (this is in flux as it also depends on how many students continue in the upper grades), and I look to fill a balanced concert band (ie. a band which is not all clarinets, or all trombones). I then may mouthpiece test extra students to fill vacant places, I then see who has declined their first round offer and I move down the data rankings until my places are filled.

If you are interested in the Instrumental Music Program at Gumdale please attend our:

2019 Instrumental Music Information Evening:

Tues 16 Oct in the Music Room, STEAM Building 5:30pm-6:30pm.

I will be there to answer questions, better explain the Instrumental Program (particularly costs and expectations), and a visiting Instrument Repairer and Second-hand instrument Supplier, Sally Lindenberg will also be there to talk about quality instrument purchasing and maintenance. Sally will also have a selection of second-hand reconditioned quality instruments with repair warranty for sale.

What to do if your child misses out on a place:

Firstly, joining choir is a great start, definitely learning a Concert Band Instrument privately is ideal too. Please keep in touch, as there may be students who depart Gumdale SS from time to time, and if your child is eligible, and has been learning privately, there may be a chance to include them in the program in Year 5. Having private lessons will mean students will be at a level with their peers. Many music stores offer an instrument rental service, and second-hand quality branded instruments are preferred over cheap, coloured or poor-quality instruments – please research carefully.

Please feel free to email me if you have further questions.

Two of our staff members are now MAPA (Management of Actual or Potential Aggression) Certified. MAPA has proved to be successful in equipping staff with safe and effective physical interventions to manage the more challenging and aggressive behaviour experienced from time to time in our service.

What we have been doing:

The last couple of weeks we have been look at the culture of Greece and now we are looking at Canada. The children have been participating in different cultural experiences. They have created so many amazing crafts and played different games. They have loved being involved in the different cultures of the world.

We have also been doing yarning circles in the mornings, educating the children about topics such as, cyber safety, social media, sustainability, recycling and stranger danger. This has been a great addition to our program in the mornings and the children have been getting really involved and bringing great questions and thoughts to the table.

What we are looking forward to:

Vacation Care is just around the corner. We are super excited to take the children on all the mini excursions we have planned. Each age group has 2 excursion each and we are even taking the older children to Wet ‘n’ Wild!

Service days are running with a great programme for children of all age groups. We can’t wait for vacation care and have positions still available for your children to attend!

Items cannot be returned to students if the only label visible on the item is just a first name. If your child has lost any items, please regularly check the lost property boxes and remember it may take a few days for items to turn up in the boxes.

The Uniform Shop fire sale continues as we try to reduce over-stocked items. All marked down items are now available to order online through Flexischools. The items will also be available to purchase from the Uniform Shop when open and are only available while stocks lasts.

Formal Shorts can be worn with the everyday polo or formal shirts, at $5.00 a pair, stock up for next year and even the year after.

2019 Senior Shirts are now available to purchase on Flexischools for our current Year 5 students. A letter was recently sent home with all Year 5 students and a hard copy of the letter can be collected at School Admin if you did not receive it. Our supplier has recommended students go up a size from what they are currently wearing. Sample sizes are available in the Uniform Shop for students to try on during opening hours Monday and Thursday 8.30am-9.15am. Delivery of Senior Shirts will be last week of Term 4. Orders are due by Friday 21st September 2018. If you have any questions please email the uniform shop or ring during opening hours.

Flexischools orders are delivered to teacher’s pigeon holes to avoid disruption to classes and the teacher will deliver any ordered items to your child. If you have not received your order, please check with your child’s teacher first. The Uniform Shop volunteers deliver items to the pigeon holes on Monday and Thursday after 9:30pm or you can pick items up from the Uniform Shop during Uniform Shop trading days and hours.

Don’t forget we are located on Level 1 of Block A so drop by and see our friendly volunteers when the shop is open.

Update from the Fundraising Team!

Funds Raised

The fundraising team would like to extend a huge thank you to the Gumdale Community for supporting our continued fundraising efforts. The events held raise valuable funds used by the P&C to support Gumdale School and our children.

The Art Show held earlier in Term 3 raised $3,000 with the Fathers’ Day Stall raising $3,600.

Fun Run

The annual P&C School Fun Run was held on 14 September. Our Gumdale students had a great time being blasted with water and enjoying the other obstacles set up. A big thank you to James Doherty and Lucy Goddard for their help making this event a success. An update as to the amount raised from this event will be provided in Term 4.

Volunteering

If you would like to volunteer for any future events, or have any questions about what is involved, please email fundraising@gumdalesspc.org.au and you will be notified via SignUp Genius when volunteering opportunities arise throughout the year.
