Message from the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill
Thank you to everyone who attended Saturday’s ‘A Day on the Oval’ hosted by our P&C! What a tremendous community event this was for Gumdale! I was proud to see our school families, students, staff and volunteers coming together for a day of fun and fundraising in support of our great school! This event not only helped raise money for our school, but showcased the wide array of programs and opportunities available here at Gumdale - from our instrumental band, to choir groups, sport aerobics students and more. Please join me in thanking our P&C Executive Committee and crew of volunteers; a full collection of photos from this event are on the Gumdale P&C Facebook page.
With just two more weeks remaining until the end of term, we continue to have a full schedule in what has been an incredibly busy Term 3. In the coming two weeks, we still have WAMM Camp, a Prep Experience Morning for enrolled prep students commencing in 2019, our School Fun Run and of course our School Cross Country, taking place on the final day of term for all year levels (except year 2), who will complete their run the day prior.
To keep track of all events and news, please refer to our school website, emails sent home and of course, our Facebook page for reminders in real-time. As we transition away from paper permission forms to electronic, please help us by completing these electronically. This not only helps us save on paper and printing costs but also makes excursion planning more efficient.
Lastly, you may have seen Gumdale staff at the traffic lights of an afternoon handing our road safety flyers. We have witnessed/heard of too many incidents lately involving reckless behaviour. A reminder to all Gumdale parents/carers to lead by example and cross the road, at the pedestrian with care.
Until next time…..
Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal
Gumdale State School

Moderation
Last week teachers met in year level groups to complete moderation of student writing. Moderation is a school based review of student work to ensure the consistent grading of assessment using the Australian National Curriculum achievement standards. Moderation also provides the opportunity for teachers to reflect on the writing progress of students at the end of each unit of work.
Harmony Day
Last Friday the Prep students celebrated Harmony Day. The annual celebration recognises and promotes cultural diversity through encouraging respectful values and promoting participation in cultural activities. A special thank-you to Mrs. Doherty for organising the event and to the families who shared cultural items for the celebration.
Ngutana-Lui Visit
Over the past fortnight, students and teachers from Years 2 to 6 have experienced the living traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with a visit from the Ngutana-Lui Cultural Centre. Students participated in hands on activities which included aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, both traditional and contemporary. All students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the traditional storytelling, weaving and games as a part of their learning.
GROW Focus
This term we are working with all students around personal organization. Mr Savill has shared the mantra of “No one cleans up after you at Gumdale.” We are reminding students to care and take responsibility for their personal belongings such as jumpers, hats and lunchboxes. This has been reinforced in classroom visits by the leadership team.
Before and After School Routines
Our established routines, before and after school, are in place for the safety of all children on our site. Please assist us by reminding children that play equipment is out of bounds at these times of the day.
Supervision for students is provided at the hall from 8:15 AM. Students then have the opportunity to participate in fitness activities.
Students from Years 1 to 6 should not be around other school buildings even if accompanied by a parent or carer while waiting for the school day to commence.
Prep students are asked to wait with a parent or carer outside their classrooms, ready for an exciting day of learning to begin when the doors open.

2018 Review of NAPLAN
The Queensland Government is undertaking a review of NAPLAN in the Queensland context, to better understand the impacts NAPLAN is having on learning and teaching within the state.
The first stage of the Review, conducted in June 2018, focused on consultation with parents.
The second stage is now underway, with consultation extending to students, teachers, principals and other key education stakeholders across Queensland.
Queensland students in years 3 to 10 are now invited to provide feedback on their experiences with NAPLAN, via an online survey. Students wishing to participate will require the consent of a parent or carer, who can assist with completing the survey at home.
The survey link is available at the link below:
https://survey.lsia.com.au/s3/2018NapRevStudent
This project has received ethical clearance from both the Australian Catholic University and the Department of Education. Further information on the student survey and the Review are provided within the survey link.

Sustainability @ Gumdale X
In the Recycling bin you can put paper, cardboard, tin foil and hard plastic. This includes poppers and their straws, foil tuckshop packaging, and hot chocolate cups and lids. This is the same as your yellow lid recycling bin at home. For more detailed information: Brisbane City Council Guide to recycling
In the Organics bin you can ONLY put fresh fruit and vegetable scraps, for example banana peel and apple cores. No processed fruit or vegetable scraps please.
Everything else has to go in the red Rubbish bin.
We need students to start thinking about their lunch waste and choosing the correct bin. STEAM Club members and teachers will be in your eating areas to assist.
Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable!

Challenge 1 simulates a real-life challenge affecting the community of Gorkha, Nepal. Students are required to follow the engineering process to design, build and test a model bridge to help deliver disaster relief after an earthquake.
Teams have designed and finished building their bridge prototypes ready for testing!
Kitchen Garden

The warmer temperatures have brought lots of growth and renewal to the gardens as well as more club members! With the warm weather, our broccoli suddenly 'bolted' so we harvested it and the children tasted fresh broccoli soup made from their own broccoli grown in the garden along with parmesan crisps. We now have snow peas sprouting and the potatoes are growing wildly! We will know to harvest the potatoes when the green leaves start to yellow. We have done a second planting of beetroot, spinach, sunflowers, tomatoes, peppermint and continental parsley. We even found worms meaning our garden beds are healthy.
The children are now also experts at making newspaper seedling pots and their skills were used at the 'Day on the Oval' helping visitors to make and take their own seedling pot with planted seeds.
We are still looking for donations of soil for the fourth garden bed, sugar cane or lucerne mulch, any veggie seeds or plants, plastic bottle tops for bed decorations and volunteers to help our garden grow. Please feel free to have a look around the garden to see what has been happening there lately!

Year 6 Volunteering Program
One of the programs year 6 students have the opportunity to participate in is our Volunteering Program. Students go out in a group of four to Lota House Aged Care Facility to chat with residents. The program is in its third year and is well received by both students and the residents. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to enhance their interpersonal skills as well as develop a sense of service. Students often comment on how much they learnt from their conversations with the residents.
For National Seniors Week, our classes here at Gumdale contributed to making a poster for the residents at Lota House; they were overjoyed. A huge thank you to our classes for their contributions, and to the year 6 students for demonstrating respect and maturity on their visits.

Tips to Manage Fighting
A few good tips for what to do when your children are fighting with each other
Level I: Normal Bickering
Ignore it. Think about your next holiday.
Tell yourself the children are having an important experience in conflict resolution.
Level II: Situation Heating Up. Adult Intervention Might Be Helpful
Acknowledge their anger
“You two sound mad at each other!”
Reflect each child’s point of view.
“So Sara, you want to keep on holding the puppy, because he’s just settled down in your arms. And you Billy, feel you’re entitled to a turn too.”
Describe the problem with respect.
“That’s a tough one: Two children and only one puppy.”
Express confidence in the children’s ability to find their own solution.
“I have confidence that you two can work out a solution that’s fair to each of you…. And fair to the puppy.”
Leave the room
Level III: Situation Possibly Dangerous
- Inquire:
“Is this a play fight or a real fight?” (Play fights are permitted. Real fights are not.) - Let the children know:
“Play fighting by mutual consent only.” (If it’s not fun for both, it’s got to stop.)
Level IV: Situation Definitely Dangerous! Adult Intervention Necessary.
Describe what you see.
“I see two angry children who are about to hurt each other.”
Separate the children.
“It’s not safe to be together. We must have a cooling-off period. Quick, you to your room, and you to yours!”
Music Notes

This term Council decided to give the Staff Recognition Award to Jeff Stonehouse.

The Top Oval will be available for Sponsorship opportunities, to be explored from the beginning of 2019. The Community Partnerships Working Party will be actioning this process.

Nominees for new Council members will be called for midway through 2019.
Half of the current elected officers can remain for another three year term.

Gumdale – A Day on the Oval
The 2018 Gumdale State School P&C Gumdale – A Day on the Oval was held on Saturday 1 September. It was a fabulous event filled with live performances, inflatable fun park, animal farm, face painting, food trucks and fundraising stalls and it was amazing to see so many of the local and school community support the event!
The live auction run by David Whyte from McGrath Bayside Manly – Cleveland was a highlight of the event program and some amazing items donated by sponsors were snapped up by some successful auction bidding.
Thank you to our live performers Ed & Eddy, Cooper Flick, Millhouse’s Revenge and The Pinup Girl’s for providing us with some fantastic entertainment during the course of the day. Also thank you to Vivienne Thomas, Lucy Goddard and Gretchen Mander-Jones for coordinating the performances of GSS students in the Beginner Band, Senior Band, Sports Aerobics and the Vocalites singing group. We have some very talented students at the school!
This event would not have been possible with the support of local business, we would like to thank and acknowledge our event major sponsors the Gumdale Tavern, McGrath Bayside Manly – Cleveland, Shawn & Kym Real Estate, Todd Gerhardt Realty and YMCA Gumdale. This event was also supported by the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Grant by Councillor Adrian Schrinner and Councillor Ryan Murphy.
We were also lucky enough to have our resident photographer, Mark Button, there to capture the event and bringing it all together were our fabulous MC’s Ian Malpass and GSS Mum & Prep Parent Melissa McLennan.
Thank you to the Gumdale – A Day on the Oval Working Party who worked tirelessly for a couple of month planning and coordianting this amazing event.

Update from the Fundraising Team!
Father’s Day
We hope all our Gumdale Dads and Grandads had a wonderful Father’s Day. The Father’s Day stall was a great success, with the Gumdale kids putting a lot of thought and consideration into their gifts. Thank you to all the volunteers helped on the stall. An update as the amount raised will be provided in the next newsletter.

Fun Run
A reminder that the fun run will be held next week, on 14 September. Don’t forget children have the opportunity to earn prizes based on the value of sponsorship they manage to raise!
Volunteering
If you would like to volunteer for this or any future event, or have any questions about what is involved, please email fundraising@gumdalesspc.org.au and you will be notified via SignUp Genius when volunteering opportunities arise throughout the year.
