Message from the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill
Welcome to the end of Week 6. A little bit of a breather this week after two weeks in top gear.
I’d like to congratulate many of our students who have given their best across a range of recent events and activities. From the Osprey Science Cup held at Wellington Point State High School, to Under 8s Day, ICAS Tests (that are now complete), National Science Week activities, our Rugby League team reaching the Brisbane primary semi-finals and our 100+ students completing in the FISAF National Championships for Sport Aerobics. Well done to all! Gumdale walked away with an incredible two gold, one silver and three bronze titles in the FISAF competition. A big round of applause to everyone, including Miss Goddard, who was also crowned School Streams Coach of the Year!
Wednesday was the highlight of this week for many – as students and staff took part in Team Colours Day to raise money for an appointed cancer charity. Students got to enjoy wearing something other than their school uniform for a day. In return, we were able to raise more than $1,200 towards this importance cause. Thank you to our Student Council for helping to organise this event.
Not long now until A Day on the Oval – our P&C’s family fun extravaganza. Don’t make plans on Saturday 1 September, instead come along to this hallmark event. Money raised on the day will go towards supplying remaining classrooms with air-conditioning. We extend our sincere thanks to our P&C for their on-going commitment to improving the facilities and resources of our school.
If you have a free day this Sunday and would like to try out a new water-based activity, why not visit our friends at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron? They are hosting a ‘try sailing’ day on Sunday 26 August. More details are noted in their flyer at the end of our newsletter.
Last but not least, today is the final day for parents/caregivers to have a their say in our School Opinion Survey. Survey slips were sent home at the start of this month. Please take a few minutes to let us know what we do well and how we can improve; your feedback counts!
Always our Best,

Phil Savill, Principal

‘It’s all about turning the tables and giving teachers their A+. They’re asking Queensland students and families to get involved and write thank you notes to those in the school community who have inspired them. Each note written will be one entry into the competition, giving our school the chance to win a $20,000 staffroom makeover.’
The staff at Gumdale would love an upgrade to our staffroom. Please click on the link below and write a thank you note or two to some of the wonderful staff members at Gumdale who have helped or inspired you. You can write as many notes as you like. Thank you in advance!

A parent information session will be held on Thursday 6 September in our School Hall starting at 7pm. This session will provide prospective iPad parents information about our BYOD program for 2019. We will continue our iPad program for Years 2-6 next year and are looking at expanding some of our existing classes. Students already in an iPad class will remain in the class unless parents request otherwise. Parents with children already in the iPad program do not need to attend this session.

Read On
All our students have completed reading tests in the last fortnight. Teachers test every student individually to measure student’s level of achievement and rate of improvement.
The teachers then use the information they have gathered to give students feedback on their reading development and to formulate specific individualized reading goals.
At Gumdale we think that reading goals are very important as they guide students to:
- Read with intention and purpose
- Practice a specific reading skill
- Become reflective thinkers
- Develop a clearer understanding of reading
- Build confidence
- Feel a sense of accomplishment
Extra-curricular activities
The STEAM program at Gumdale offers our students the opportunity to build their skills from Prep through to Year. Last week our students participated in a Science Stage Show spectacular. This was a great way to inspire our students to continue their interest in Science. As part of Science week, some of our senior students shared their sustainability project on Assembly to encourage all students to reduce waste.
Under 8s day is always a great way to celebrate the early years. It was lovely to see so many parents and younger siblings join the fun. We also welcomed two of our local Kindergartens to the event. A highlight of the morning was certainly the visit from our Emergency Services colleagues. Thank you to the volunteers from the Fire Service, Ambulance Service and Police Service who gave our students a tour of their vehicles! Thank you also to our year 6 student leaders who assisted with the running of a number of activities – they certainly gave their best.
Colours day was well supported by our student body, with many students wearing their favourite sporting team colours. As we visited classrooms we were impressed with the variety of teams supported – some classes had no double up of team colours!

Prep Harmony Day at Gumdale
On Wednesday 29 August, between 9am and 11am, the Preps of Gumdale will be participating in activities to celebrate difference and diversity at our Gumdale Prep Harmony Day.
Prep children will rotate through a number of hands-on activities to get a feel for different cultures. Through this, we are hoping to encourage understanding of diversity in our Gumdale Prep Community.
The Prep Team are therefore seeking some help from parents of Prep children and the broader community. We are asking if you would be willing and able to share a piece of your culture, using the below mediums as a platform.
- Games – Come on the day with a cultural game to play with some Prep children.
- Clothing- Bring cultural clothing samples and allow children to dress up in clothing originating from various cultures.
Other activities will include flag making, playing musical instruments, craft, inclusive games and story sharing.
Please contact Michele Devlin (mdevl1@eq.edu.au) or Kristin Doherty (kdohe32@eq.edu.au) via email if you are willing to share a piece of your culture with the Preps. We welcome any contribution large or small and will be truly grateful for your efforts!

Events @ Gumdale
National Science Week – Game Changers and Change Makers
Gumdale students had a jammed pack National Science Week full of STEM activities and demonstrations.
We kicked off with a visit from CSIRO STEM in Schools professional Patrick Davey. Patrick brought his robot Zee along for the students to meet. A few lucky students also had a go in the driver’s seat! Check out the highlights video on Gumdale Youtube.
Our Prep students participated in a Sustainability Workshop that had them sorting their lunch waste (Recycling, Organics and Rubbish), meeting our compost worms and planting some seeds in the Prep garden beds. With some nurturing from our Prep students we should have a harvest of potatoes, tomatoes, basil and snow peas later in the term, along with some pretty daisy and succulent beds.
Street Science visited the school and presented their stage show ‘Blasting the Past’ for all year levels. Students learnt about game changers of the past and ended the show with a bang!
Gumdale Coding and Robotics Clubs (Year 1 to 6) showcased their amazing talents and projects to a very impressed audience. Beware the jumping drones!

Sustainability @ Gumdale
The Year 6 eating area now have the Recycling, Organics and Rubbish bins and students are doing a great job sorting their rubbish. Only a small amount of re-sorting has been required. Further bins will be introduced to other eating areas soon!
In the Recycling bin you can put paper, cardboard, tin foil and hard plastic. This includes poppers and their straws, foil tuckshop packaging, and hot chocolate cups and lids. This is the same as your yellow lid recycling bin at home. For more detailed information: Brisbane City Council Guide to recycling
In the Organics bin you can ONLY put fresh fruit and vegetable scraps, for example banana peel and apple cores. No processed fruit or vegetable scraps please.
Everything else has to go in the red Rubbish bin.
We need students to start thinking about their lunch waste and choosing the correct bin. STEAM Club members and teachers will be in your eating areas to assist.
Let’s work together in making Gumdale State School more sustainable!
Sustainability 1 - 4
Year 4
Students are studying life cycles as part of their Biology unit and have set up their first investigation – ‘What happens to the germination of eucalypt seeds when we change the amount of light they receive?’

STEAM Clubs
Kitchen Garden
It has been a busy first half of the term! Where there were no plants, everything has sprouted and we have harvested some Asian vegetables and red radishes! The students sampled fresh and pickled radishes (compliments of Michelle Boutin and Jamie Oliver) from our produce. Our lettuce has flowered and will self-seed for another crop of fresh, tasty salad leaves. The veggies are receiving loving care from club members in the form of worm tea drinks, light weeding and building of bamboo ‘tee pee’ structures for our amazing snow and sugar snap peas to hug and climb with their reaching tendrils.
Plans are underway to ‘beautify’ the boxes with artistic flare and we would appreciate any plastic bottle lids – all shapes, sizes and colours. Please drop to the STEAM room!
Some of our tasks for the coming semester will be building a bathtub worm farm and compost bins, decorating garden beds, healthy cooking from our garden, and, planning next season’s crops.
We meet every Thursday 8.00-8.40 in the STEAM room!
New student, parent and teacher members are always welcome!

Brisbane Rugby League Finals

Congratulations to the U/11 rugby league who made it to the semi finals of the Brisbane Primary Schools Rugby League Finals. Unfortunately the team lost in this game against Banksia Beach State School at Bishop Park last Friday. It has been a very successful season for the boys and they must be commended on not only how well they played but also the way they represented the school. Thanks also to Mr Rossow for his assistance with the team this year.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a buzz word that we see and hear a lot. So, what is it, and how can it help our kids and us?
Put simply, mindfulness is learning to pay attention. It’s about living in the moment and taking in what is going on around us at that specific point in time rather than focusing on what has happened, or what is going to happen.
Practising mindfulness helps to calm and relax us as well as helping us to cope with the pressure, stress and challenges of everyday life. Practised just before bed, it can also assist some people getting to sleep.
The Smiling Mind website states: ‘Mindfulness plays an important role in your mental & physical wellbeing as Associate Professor Craig Hassed from Monash University explains. Mindfulness can play a role in helping to:
- Reduce the physical wear and tear on the body
- Increase your immune system
- Switch off excessive inflammation in the body
- Relieve cardiovascular stress
- Switch down cortisol and damage to your bones’
If you’re interested in trying mindful meditation, Smiling Mind is a great program that was developed in Australia. There are a variety of programs available according to age and sessions are designed to help a range of areas such as sleep, wellbeing, managing emotions, concentration and school behaviour. It can also assist with resilience, creativity, better decision making and a creating a sense of calm, clarity and contentment. It’s free to sign up, so click on the link below to sign up and start putting a big smile on your mind.

WAMM Camp (Years 5&6)
Notes will go home this week regarding WAMM Camp. A copy will also be emailed home, and invoices generated. I made the decision for our advanced Year 6 students not to attend the Southside Advanced Camp as it is no longer auditioned and so no longer any different to the wonderful music opportunities at the new-format WAMM Camp. The camp has a new structure, new conductors, new tutors plus physical activities and choir which will be a great experience for all of our Year 5&6 Instrumental Students!
Year 3 Instrumental Recruitment
We have commenced the recruitment process for the 2019 instrumental program. All children in Year 3 took part in a music aptitude test last week and the first shortlist of students came back for instrument testing. The first round of offers will be sent home later this term with program information in the handbook. Stay tuned for more

This event is licensed, so why not grab a drink and sit on the grass and enjoy the live performances with your family. Whilst you’re in the Wet Area Tent you may want to purchase a raffle ticket in the Todd Gerhart Realty Barrow of Booze raffle. I’m sure you’d all love to be wheeling this home at the end of the event!
McGrath, Bayside, Manly - Cleveland Estate Agents will be running a live auction at 4:30pm on stage. Some wonderful items will be up for grabs such as a signed Wallabies jersey, one night’s accommodation at the Oaks Calypso Plaza, Coolangatta and a Girls Makeover Birthday Party Photoshoot kindly donated by Olenka Photography. However, our signature item will be the hotly contested car park space located on school grounds which will be available for the successful bidder to park their car in for 12 months! How much will that make your school drop off and pick up routine easier? Follow our event page on Facebook for more auction item announcements.
Don’t forget the only way this event can be run and be successful is if we have parent volunteers on the day. If your able to help with one of the Year Level Fundraising stalls, or in the Wet Area Tent or selling raffle tickets or anywhere else we need help on the day, then please head to our sign-up genius and put your name in a time slot where you can lend a hand. A big time commitment is NOT needed, just 30 minutes or an hour of your time will go along way. This event really is all about many hands making light work
