Message from the Principal

Gumdale State School
Acting Principal,
Susan Cowley
Welcome to the end of Week 10. We are on the downhill run for this term with just a week to go; let’s keep that momentum going right through to 3pm next Friday.
Speaking of momentum - plenty of runners, high jumpers and athletic stars on the oval today and yesterday for our Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival. A very big thank you extends to Mr. Doherty for his organisation, YMCA for their carnival catering, and all members of staff involved in the preparation and running of this event. Be sure to visit our Facebook page next week for a great collection of photos. Well done to all students on your participation and house spirit!
I also wish to congratulate Miss Goddard and her team of Aerobics students who participated in the FISAF State Championships last weekend. Teams representing Gumdale State School won three gold, four silver and two bronze titles, with several individual students also qualifying for national championships due to outstanding performances. A big round of applause to all students who did so well.
As you will see in this week’s newsletter - numerous great events and opportunities have been taking place both in and outside of school over the past two weeks. For example: Beginner Band Camp at the Sleeman Complex, the official welcome of Gumdale State School’s new bus; participation in the Young Writers’ Program for a number of our Year 5 students; Interschool Sport finals, Rocket Launches as part of STEAM activities; as well as our involvement as Primary School partner at Wynnum Manly Seagull’s home game on 16 June.
As we prepare for the final week of Term 2, a reminder of our ‘Find Your Treasure’ Arts Show next week as well as our Busking Bonanza pop-up concerts. We hope many of you can join us on Wednesday 27 June 5:00-8:00pm for the main event of Gumdale State School’s Art Show. There will be entertainment, food vans, lucky door prizes and more, so be sure to come along.
I’m certain many of our parent families are eagerly awaiting the arrival of student report cards. Not long now, report cards will be sent to parents via email on Wednesday 27 June.
A reminder there will be no full school newsletter next week, however I will email home a final note to families on the last day of Term.
I hope everyone is starting to plan some fun and relaxing activities for over the school holidays. Don’t forget that Code Camp will be running from 2-4 July 2018 here at Gumdale. You can sign up at:

Until next time, always our best!

Susan Cowley

Sailing has come to a close for this term. All students have gained many skills in sailing small vessels and working together as a team. All students are working towards completing their tacking certificates.
Band Camp
The administration team were fortunate to attend the Year 4 Band Camp final concert last Friday at Chandler. The level of talent across all school was very impressive. Year 4 students enjoyed the week long experience with students from across the bayside region.
Reporting
As our final deputy message for the semester, we would like to acknowledge all of our teachers and students for their efforts. Report cards will be emailed to families next week and as we have read through the student’s reports we are very proud of all the work that has been done in our classrooms throughout the first part of the year.
We wish the Gumdale community a safe and restful break. Keep warm and enjoy time with family!

The under 12 performed courageously but were outsized by a strong Wynnum State School team. Well done to all the boys involved!

Congratulations to the Senior Concert Band for their performance at Fanfare. We are proud that you represented Gumdale with exemplary behaviour on and off stage. They had great stage presence and their performance was the best Gumdale has produced in the last few years. It was great to meet and listen to other bands in the region and we received some encouraging feedback from the adjudicator. Looking forward to bigger and better music in the future.

School Council – What is it all about?
When Gumdale State School adopted the decision to become an Independent State School there were certain responsibilities that needed to be fulfilled to allow the school to operate on a more independent basis.
One of these was to establish a governance body that would have an overall guidance role, and take a strategic approach and direction, in achieving defined goals. The Council monitors the school operational administration to stay on course and achieve the objectives set for Gumdale State School by the school community.
The Council’s role does not impact on the day-to-day operations of the school, and it has no financial resources or controls. In that sense, the Council is an advisory body rather than an operational body.
A key focus of the Council mission is to support improved educational outcomes and the growth of the school as a centre of excellence, within the learning areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM). This has been established in draft form as a mission statement by the Council, along with four key action areas:
- Being consulted in senior employment matters to ensure strong and consistent leadership;
- Promoting employment of highly qualified and experienced staff consistent with school values;
- Supporting long-term employment initiatives and retention incentives for quality staff;
- Supporting the senior administration team in fostering a positive social tone in the school.

Talking Families
Parenting is hard, but you’re not alone
It’s a myth that you’re born with parenting skills. You learn as you go and there are going to be times when parents will feel overwhelmed or frustrated with the pressures of raising children. But you’re not alone — all parents struggle with the stress of parenting.
Getting it off your chest helps. Just talking to someone about what’s worrying you can be the first step to realising you’re not alone and getting the help you need.
The Talking Families website is full of helpful information and easy ways to ask people around you for help before you feel like you’ve reached breaking point. And you may be surprised at just how many people you know who would be happy to offer support.

Working with your child to support them as a reader

Parents and carers play a vital part in supporting their child’s development as a reader. There are a number of activities that you can do each day to assist your child in this area.
