Message from the Principal

Gumdale State School
Acting Principal,
Susan Cowley
Many of you may have read my email earlier in the week to advise that Mr Savill will be returning to Gumdale State School as your school Principal, starting Semester 2.
What a pleasure it has been fill in for Mr Savill during his temporary secondment to MacGregor State School. I am greatly impressed by the staff, students and wider community here; all of whom are inclusive, respectful and above all, great learners. Please join me in welcoming back Mr Savill to Gumdale starting Semester 2.
With just three weeks left remaining this term, it’s full steam ahead here at Gumdale. Our Year 4s have been making their own pocket rockets as part of a Science Incursion, our Year 2s have been on an excursion to Koala Pine Sanctuary, our Gumdale Sport Aerobics teams have been participating in local challenges, our Senior Band took part in the local Fanfare orchestra and band competition, and we held Prep Information sessions for families looking to join Gumdale State School starting in 2019. Much of the highlights from this week and last are featured in our photo gallery further below.
Thank you to all of our teachers and staff for your commitment to providing the best learning opportunities and experiences for our students. Each and everyday – this school reflects its motto – Always our best.
As the cooler weather sets upon us, please remember that students are to be dressed in appropriate Gumdale State School uniforms. Our P&C’s Uniform Shop operates with the convenience of flexischools – allowing you to place orders online and have them delivered directly to your child’s classroom. Please ensure to equip your child with the correct uniform.
At the start of next week, our Instrumental Students will be taking part in a Beginner Band Camp – to be held at the Sleeman Complex. What an exciting time! Thank you to Mrs Thomas and Ms Slater for your coordination. Speaking of camps, less than two months to go before our Year 6s head off on their Camp to Sydney & Canberra; I can already sense the excitement in G Block!
Last but not least, a reminder about road safety. We ask that all members of our community are sensible and do the right thing when it comes to crossing the road with children – please respect the road signals, don’t rush to cross the pedestrian and ensure to drive/park with care and in designated parking zones within the school premises.
Safety first!
Until next time, always our best!

Susan Cowley
Acting Principal

2019 Enrolments

A reminder to existing Gumdale State School families or prospective families in our catchment area that may have a child eligible to start Prep in 2019. Please submit your enrolment applications as soon as possible so we have your child enrolled for 2019. Early submissions enable us to plan for 2019 and consider applications from families living outside the catchment area. All enrolment paperwork can be downloaded from our school website. If you have a question regarding how to enrol, please contact the school office on 3902 8333.
Stop, Drop and Go Zone
Mornings and afternoons at our Stop, Drop and Go zone are very busy, particularly so in the afternoon. To ensure a smooth process, please have your child’s name/surname displayed clearly on your sun visor or windscreen. If you require a sign for your car, please email Cara at cschu102@eq.edu.au . Lastly, a reminder that parents MUST NOT park their car and leave it unattended in the Stop, Drop and Go zone. Please respect fellow members of the school community by following procedures.

Humanities and Social Sciences
You will no longer see history and geography on your child’s report card. In line with the Australian curriculum, these learning areas have been replaced by HASS – Humanities and Social Sciences. HASS includes a study of history, geography, civics and citizenship and economics and business. Please follow the link below if you would like any further information on this or any other learning area in the Australian Curriculum.

Reporting
At the end of every semester, schools report to parents on their child’s achievement, effort and behaviour. This semester, report cards will emailed to parents after 3pm on Wednesday 27 June. In preparation for reporting, parents are asked to contact Marissa Bowen (mbowe79@eq.edu.au) with any email address updates.
Always our Best
As we visit classrooms and chat with students about their reading and writing we are continually impressed with the great efforts that students at Gumdale give to their learning. It is great to see how students have progressed throughout the year. Congratulations to our students and teachers for always giving their best.
Moderation
Over the next two weeks our teachers will meet to look at samples of student work. This process helps our teachers ensure consistency when allocating student grades for reporting. Our teachers will then complete reporting on students’ learning for the end of semester report cards.
Toys from home
Please encourage your children to leave special toys and collectables at home. Sometimes these items cause issues at play time and may get lost which sometimes causes unnecessary distress at school.
Always our Best

If your student attended and payment has not been received, you will be emailed a new invoice for this particular excursion.
Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your child will not be attending the excursion, this will save you receiving another invoice.
Prompt payment is of invoices will also ensure that additional invoices are not emailed to you, payment due dates are stated on the excursion letter which you receive the day before you are invoiced.

STEAM Club Years 3-6
Waste reduction - ‘RECYCLING, ORGANICS & WASTE’ bins will be introduced in the year 3 to 6 eating areas. Stay tuned for the Clubs educational video on what to put in each bin!
Compost bins – If you are handy with tools and have some time we would greatly appreciate assistance in turning the student designs into reality. Contact Amanda Sheppard.
Gardening – ‘Today the STEAM club continued to prepare for the new kitchen gardens by planting seeds! We used newspaper to make biodegradable seedling pots and made a mini greenhouse out of a plastic box to help the seeds germinate during these colder winter days. Students made their own newspaper pots and learned the method to successful seed germination: gentle handling, using seed raising mix and keeping the soil moist and warm. We expect to see green shoots in the next 7-14 days! So far we have planted carrots, broccoli, nasturtiums and shallots but there is much more to come! Each student took home their very own plant pot as well as making several for the school gardens.’ Michelle Boutin (parent volunteer) 31 May 2018
Thank you for the donations so far. We are still seeking further donations to assist in getting our garden growing. If you can assist please follow the below link.

Year 6 Aspire Higher Leadership Incursion
Last Thursday Hogan and Peter from Unleashing Personal Potential came to Gumdale for the day to run their ‘Aspire Higher’ leadership program with our year 6 students. It was a full day of training with the whole cohort over three high impact sessions. Students participated in team builders, initiative, and problem solving activities with a servant leadership theme.
Students took part in a variety of activities and discussions:
- LEADING WITH OR WITHOUT THE BADGE- example, influence and kindness,
- THE EPIC RACE- outdoor, fast-paced team event (using our A.S.P.I.R.E. framework),
- KNOWING ME, GROWING ME- understanding my strengths and those of others.
It was great to see students challenging themselves to try something different and persist with some of the hurdles presented. Unleashing Personal Potential will be out again in term 3 to present to our year 5 students. We look forward to having them back.
