Message from the Principal

Gumdale State
School Principal,
Phil Savill

As you may have read in my email earlier this week, I have been asked to fill a temporary post at MacGregor State School for the next six weeks, starting Monday. I will maintain my substantive role as Principal of Gumdale State School, but will be absent for the remainder of this term.

During my posting to MacGregor, Ms Carmel Herbert will serve as Acting Principal.

I wish to assure all of our parents and stakeholders that that it is business as usual at Gumdale State School. This year is off to a great start and I thank everyone – parents, staff, sponsors, P&C volunteers - for your ongoing commitment towards our school community.

This week we held a Ceremony to welcome our new Student Council leaders for 2018. Congratulations to all; I look forward to witnessing their collaboration and leadership throughout the year as they serve as Ambassadors to our school.

A reminder about parking in and around the school. We have received numerous complaints from our close neighbours (Eastside Village, Kindys etc. that skirt our perimeter). In respect to our fellow neighbours, please ensure you are using our Tilley Road Carpark and our Stop, Drop Go Zone.

Thank you to everyone who attended our P&C’s AGM on Tuesday of this week. We are greatly appreciative of the work our P&C Executive Committee and volunteers have done. Over the past year, they enabled us to air-condition four classrooms through generous funding and will provide funding for an additional nine classrooms to be air-conditioned. We look forward to another great year with Shaunesy at the helm along with her fellow re-elected Committee members.

As our many school activities are back in full swing: school choir, STEAM Club, sporting events and more – I encourage your child to join in and make the most of what our great school has to offer.

I am particularly excited that our school will host 16 students from Japan at the end of next week for a 12-day study tour. What a wonderful opportunity for our students and visiting guests. Time for us all to learn a few Japanese phrases and share some vegemite sandwiches.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Always our Best,

Phil Savill
Principal

Reminders from the School

School Photos

Official School photos will be held on Monday and Tuesday (5 – 6 March 2018) in our School Hall. Students are required to wear their formal school uniform on both days, including black shoes. The Sibling Photos will be taken in the Hall between 7:45 and 8:45am. Forms will be coming home next week with details on how to access the website to place your order. An example slip can be viewed at the link below. If you have any questions regarding the process, the website or the packages, please contact Geoff directly at geoff@littleimages.com.au

Coles Schools for Sports

Gumdale State School is participating in the Coles Schools for Sports Program. For every $10 spent at Coles, you will receive one Sports for Schools voucher. Parents/students are asked to bring vouchers to our school and place them in the collection bin, located in the Admin Building reception. Every voucher you donate to our school can be redeemed for leading brand sports equipment.

Parking and Traffic Movement

A reminder to be considerate of other users of the roads and parking areas around our school. Please ensure signage and traffic direction is adhered to. The speed limit through our car parks is 10 km/h. Our student safety as well as your own is a priority.

Parking at the Eastside Village is not for school drop-off and pick-up. We understand that the peak drop off and pick up times can be busy for families, but please be patient and respectful of our neighbourhood friends and businesses. Families are encouraged to use our Stop, Drop & Go zone within the Tilley Road School Car park.

Messages from the Deputies

Reading

Reading continues to be a priority for Gumdale State School students. It is great to see how keen our students are to read and the improvements they are making in this area. As we visit classrooms and talk to students, the enthusiasm our teachers and students have for reading is evident. Thank you to our parents for supporting your children at home, reading quality texts with them and listening to them read daily.

Student Council Badge Presentation

Congratulations to all our elected class representatives who were presented with their Student Council badges on Monday this week. We are confident that these students will work with their peers and the school leaders to make 2018 a year to remember at Gumdale State School. Photos from the Badge Presentation are further below in this issue.

Mornings in the Hall

Due to technical issues with the screens in the Hall we are unable to offer Just Dance in the Hall before school. Students in years 2-6 are offered the option of activities on the oval with Mr Doherty. Students in the Hall are asked to sit and talk quietly with their friends prior to lining up. Students are fully supervised in the Hall by staff enabling parents to drop their children off. Please be mindful of keeping all doorways clear for our students.

STEAM News

Year 1

Students have been learning all about light by investigating with light boxes, torches and a variety of transparent, translucent and opaque materials.

Year 4

Students are investigating catchments and the water cycle by modelling rain falling on a landscape using one of our garden beds and a watering can.

Year 6

Students put their engineering skills into practise by designing and building a marshmallow and tooth-pick tower that could withstand a jelly earthquake simulation.

STEAM Club Years 3-6

STEAM Club started this week in a rather ‘messy’ manner with a workshop from Brisbane City Council looking at our waste. Club members upended eating area bins to investigate what we throw away. With tongs in hand they sorted the rubbish. It was discovered we could recycle or compost most of our rubbish that is currently going to landfill!

And so our journey to a more sustainable Gumdale State School begins for 2018.

The STEAM Club for 2018 will have a Sustainability focus with a variety of projects pencilled in.

  • Waste - recycling, compost and landfill bins in eating areas. Education campaign for students, teachers and families.
  • Garden beds & Kitchen Garden – sponsored by IGA.
  • Compost bin and worm farm design and construction

We meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11.15 – 11.40. Students are welcome to attend all 3 days, however if they can only make 1 or 2 that is fine too.

New members are always welcome!

STEAM Club Years 1-2

The STEAM Club for years 1 and 2 will focus on coding this term and meet every Thursday 11.15-11.40 in the STEAM room.

New members are always welcome!

How to Back up an iPhone or iPad

Anyone who's ever lost precious data knows that making good backups of your data is essential. All computers encounter trouble sometimes and having a backup can be the difference between successfully recovering your files and losing days, months, or even years of data.

Backing up your iPad is just as important as backing up your desktop or laptop. There a many ways to backup an iPad, iPhone and iPod. The best option for you depends on your needs, but make sure you use at least one regularly.

Please click on the following link to view instructions on how to perform back ups.

Messenger, Facebook and iMessage

We request that between the hours of 8:30am and 3:00pm you restrict the following applications: Messenger, Facebook and iMessage. We do this for the safety and good management of the school and students because we are unable to monitor what comes in or goes out through messages. Any communication between home, school and/or the community should be via our office: 3902 8333. Use of iPads may be restricted if your child infringes this policy.

Some parents may choose to enable restrictions on their child’s iPad. To enable students to utilise their iPads at school we ask that restriction codes are provided to the school IT technician to enable the following:

  • Wi-Fi profile installation
  • Internet access
  • Apps and camera access to the internet
  • Access to File Saving
  • Airdrop

Restriction Codes

Restriction codes will be held securely in the ICT department of the school by our IT Support person and will not be shared with your child or other staff members. This will enable our IT Support to address any iPad access issues for your child at school. If a restriction is removed, your child’s teacher will be notified and you will be emailed regarding the changes. Please email Kyla Evison (IT Support) kevis2@eq.edu.au with the following information:

  1. Your Child’s Name and class
  2. Restriction Code
  3. Your email address

Please note: You do not have to provide this information.

On Entry to Prep: Early Start

We recognise that before starting school our students have already begun to learn about reading, writing and numbers through everyday experiences with their families and caregivers.

At the beginning and end of Prep, our school uses a resource callled “Early Start” to determine each students level of familiarity with a range of mathematical and literacy concepts and skills. We then use this information to plan programs that support each student’s learning needs.

Over the next few weeks Gumdale Prep students will complete a series of Early Start literacy tasks one-on-one with a teacher or teachers’ aide. While schools do not report on Early Start results, our teachers are able to provide parents with feedback.

Parents can access further information by discussing Early Start with their child’s teacher or by clicking on the following links:

Six skill sets that help kids succeed

Below, Michael Grose outlines six skill sets that contribute to a child’s sense of accomplishment and happiness.

When I was teaching, as I got to know to children at the start of the year, I was always on the lookout for factors others than academic ability. As a number of researchers have found, including Prof. Michael Bernard author of the You Can Do It Program, children need more than a penchant for learning to succeed at school.

There are a number of skill sets that contribute to children’s success over the long-term. They are skills that we neglect if we narrow our focus on numeracy, literacy, performing arts and other academic skill sets. They are also skill sets that can be taught, or at the very least drawn out, when we as adults know what to look for.

Following are six skill sets that contribute massively to overall student success and contentedness at school.

1. Friendship skills

The ability to get along with others is hugely important for children. How quickly children settle into a new school year will be determined as much by their ability to make new friends and fit into a peer group, as any other factor. Those children with a strong set of friendship skills have a definite set of skills that makes them easy to like, easy to relate to and easy to play with. These skills include the ability to win and lose well; how to approach others to join in a group and how to lead rather than boss. These are just three of 17 basic friendship skills that have been identified as being essential for making and keeping friends.

2. Organising skills

You can probably recall when you went to school a student who was really bright, but who let themselves down because they couldn’t organise themselves or others. The ability to organise your time, your space, your items and others is a massive plus for any student. Being organised extends beyond school, including at home and during leisure time. The best way to help children who are organisationally-challenged is to introduce them to systems and processes to help them organise themselves. These processes include the use of visual reminders; anchoring (i.e linking new behaviours to habitual behaviours) and mapping activities out.

3. Optimism skills

It may seem strange to see optimism as skill set, but as leading psychologist Prof. Martin Seligman discovered through his research, optimism can be taught. Seligman found that while some children are more inclined by nature to see a glass as half empty than half full, all children are capable of developing an optimistic explanatory style through exposure and direct teaching. The skills of optimism include being aware of self-talk, reframing negative events into positive effects and the practice of perspective-taking.

4. Coping skills

Kids will generally face a number of challenges during the course of their school lives including overcoming disappointment of missing being picked in a team; working their way through difficult learning situations and meeting with rejection. How stressful these situations will depend on their own spirit, the support they receive and their coping skills. The good news is that coping skills can be taught, or at the very least, encouraged, if adults know what to focus on. Coping strategies include parking problems for a while; normalising a situation and accepting and moving on. Some kids will use coping strategies quite naturally, while others need parental input to help them cope with seemingly minor challenges.

5. Relaxation skills

The ability to relax and get away from it all is vital for the maintenance of mental health, which in turn, impacts on a student’s ability to perform. Many of today’s kids live with pressure. That pressure needs to be released through relaxation and play, otherwise it just continues to build and it shows itself through anxiety and other mental illnesses. The ability to relax and unwind is paramount to your child’s school success. Ways to unwind include getting lost in a hobby; learning how to meditate and enjoying creative pursuits.

6. Relationship skills

Children at school are involved in hundreds of social interactions every day ranging from working cooperatively with a peer in class through to asking a teacher for help. Most of the interactions go well, but there are times when there will be conflict and tension. This is when children with a solid set of communication and relationship skills honed through a myriad of sibling interactions come to the fore. They don’t become flummoxed when a child won’t give them what they want, or a child tells tales to the teacher about them. Children that come from very small families (two children or less) often don’t have experiences of conflict to draw on so they need to be taught how to give way graciously; to stand up for themselves assertively rather than angrily and to see two sides to a story rather than take things personally. There are many skills we can teach our kids to help them maintain healthy relationships at school, as well as in their families.

These skill sets are part developmental and part environmental. That is, kids will naturally develop many skills as they mature. But also many of the skills need to be nurtured environmentally- that is, they need to be recognised, encouraged, taught and modelled by adults that children and teenagers respect and admire if children are to acquire them. That makes parents Very Important People in the acquisition process of these skill sets in children and young people.
